Lol, awesome that things are progressing well now bro. Great news! Far out, unlocking our health problems can be farking tricky. Good on you for still pushing (safely) around what you can do.

Ha, this thread is so old that the software checked that I didn't want to start a new thread instead.
Been a year (almost) since the last update. 2018 was a bit of a write off for diet and exercise, but by the end of the year I had the health mostly sorted out. To the degree that the specialist I was seeing recently told me he doesn't need to see me anymore, and everything seems normal now.
He put me on an intermittent fasting diet to get some of my hormones back in check, and it's more than done the trick. Essentially doing the 16/8 everyday, often 20/4 (had to build up to that), and am eating at a calorie deficit (1800 to 1500) on the feed days and at least two days a week drop to 800 calories. So 16/8 + 5/2 basically, lots of protein and vegetables.
I started that in January, and I have lost 10kg from the peak of my illness.
Has also made a huge difference to energy levels, concentration. My memory is still not great, but that's easy enough to manage.
I had a couple of experiements with jogging and 10min HIT burst on a indoor bike. No headaches or any of the other symptoms I had been experiencing. I was too heavy for the running, so am waiting until I get a bit more weight off before adding that back in regularly.
The doctor thinks it'll take another year to get the exercise sorted out. It won't be crossfit, but I do want to get back into some sort of weight lifting.
At the current rate of weight loss, at some point in late May I'll be back to the weight I was before I got sick in 2015.
Next mini goal is 83kg, hopefully only three weeks away.
I can't speak highly enough of intermittent fasting, makes those drinking sessions much easier to handle, aside from that and bags of chippies ( grrrrrrrrr ) I don't really have too many vices. The 16/8 has the belt feeling looser in a matter of days I reckon.
-
@MN5 yeah, I was dubious at first but the Doctor was raving about it in terms of the health benefits, of which weight loss was just one factor.
It took a while to get into the swing of it, I started with 16/8 only, then the calorie deficit, then the 5/2 and finally stretches of sub 1000 (three or four days at a time.
I’m trying to get to 2/5 while I’m doing the weight loss and then go back to 5/2 when I’ve reached the target.
Helps to be busy at work. It’s only hard around 12pm, apparently your body is expecting food then, so if you push through 1pm to 3 or 4pm gets easy again.
-
So hit a bit of a plateau and was trying to work out why. Looks like there are some studies that say having something that tastes sweet, even with zero calories, still triggers an insulin response and takes you out of fat burning for fuel.
I was struggling with energy in the mornings and started having a coke zero at 10.30 instead of 12/12.30 (the only change I could see). So three days ago I had my first ever coffee to replace the cokes. Black coffee is allowed, and supposed to support the other effects of fasting too.
Three days later, experiment results are 0.4kg lost per day. Plateau over, 11.1kg lost overall, biggest one week drop since I started of 1kg.
So will be sticking with that
Coke Zero moves to feeding window only.
That takes me under 85kg now, and 4.5kgs to the goal weight

@Kirwan I am a big fan of black coffee for my limited attempts at fasting. Building the habit is a funny old thing in my experience to date. I've gone from finding it (really) hard not to snack after 8, to finding it harder not eating before say 9-10am. I only aim for a 12 hour window overnight - although I am reducing portion size overall to drop total intake.
Do you use any apps to help track everything?
Cool that your tweak is having an impact, it's like calibrating or tuning a high performance machine (no, I haven't been talking to your missus) to get things humming!!
-
And yet, i read an article the other day that even black coffee is an inhibitor to fat burning, because of the adrenaline response in your body
It's all bullshit mate!
-
@mariner4life my mate has been doing fasting for a while and his take/info says no to black coffee, water only. But I can't make no kai in the morning and skip coffee.

There is heaps of conflicting info, very irritating. Thats why I'm having to experiment. The advantage of coffee is that I've increased my caffeine by at least 4x, so I feel pretty great

I'm pretty lucky, I never ate after 8pm anyway, so that part was easy. And my breakfast was at 9pm, so the start was only waiting 3hours.
I use the iOS Health App, and just added Happy Scale to the phone which has some nice small targets/reports in it. Smooths the charts to a rolling average so you don't go mental watching the scale go up and down daily.

@mariner4life lucky you're a snacc aye

cheese? isn't that cheating?

@mariner4life nope. You need a little more protein doing this, and you don't have restrictions on what you can eat, just how much of it and when.
So if you are on a fasting day and your max number of calories is 800, you can eat whatever you like to get to 800. You will be fuller for longer if you eat vegetables though.
If you are on the 16/8 or 20/4 flavour as well, you are burning fat from about hour 12 of your fast, so it doesn't matter then either.

yea, my tongue was firmly in my cheek when i said it.
I think people who do this stuff are incredible. I am not sure i would have the intestinal fortitude.
Mrs Mariner is doing it, and it's killing her because i still smack back calories at dinner.
My neighbour just finished it to get himself down in weight for a fight. he hated it too.
-
@mariner4life oh there are days it's tough, no doubt about it. Especially when you realise just how many calories you were smashing in a day. I'm surprised I wasn't bigger than I was.
It's likely pizza/takeway night here tonight, and I'm having a chicken salad!
That said, twice a month you are supposed to load up, and I time those for Fridays and join in. I bounce up and back down 1kg over two days when I do that.
-
@Kirwan i just spoke to Mrs Mariner about dinner, suggested our often Friday dinner of burgers. Halfway through that sentence i remembered "oh, okay, sorry, what are YOU having for dinner".
I'm going to have a burger and a couple of beers in front of the footy.
-
@mariner4life Yeah, I'm big on not forcing other people to suffer with me. It's my diet, not anyone elses.
And I'm feeling so much better, it's not that much of burden. Especially now I have gamified it, and locked the OCD tendancies into full gear.
