@Wairau Only if we don't win all the remaining matches.

South Africa will at best end up with 3 bonus point wins (Nam, Ita, Can): 15 points

Not counting the game against the ABs:

    • Italy is unlikely to beat South Africa, so will probably end up with a maximum of 2 bonus point wins (Nam, Can) and if they can stay within 7 points of SA, another bp: 11 points max

    • Canada or Namibia: unless their game against each other ends up in a draw (giving them a max of 3 points each), will end up with a max. of 4 or 5 points, the other country with 0 or 1 point max (assuming they don't collect losing bonus points, but that won't matter anyway).

Now, if one of the ABs games is cancelled this may mean that

    • Italy ends up at a maximum of 13 points
    • Canada or Namibia ends up at a maximum of 7 points (and maybe losing bonus points)

    What about the ABs?

Already in the bag: 4 points
Add 2 points from a draw (cancelled match): that makes 6 points
Add a minimum of 4 points for the other games that they are likely to win: 8 + 6 points = 14 points (which is more than Italy)

Unless my calculation is off, we will still make the QF if one game is cancelled and we win the other games.

Whether we finish first or second in the pool, depends on bonus points from the non-cancelled games. If we finish on equal points with SA (15 points), we end up on top, because we've won the game against SA. We only need to win one of the non-cancelled games with a bonus point to achieve that.

Been talking about this for years - we get heaps of rain in September and October - usually all at once, usually via typhoons.

It’s a bit surprising that the organizers did t consider how to get around that. I assume the games will be moved. If not, it’s a joke.

@gt12 Agreed. I'm in Kyushu and I've already had plans ruined by the last typhoon. Last year I was in the Ryukus for a couple of weeks and had typhoons.

    Oita should be fine.

That's why the next RWC should have been held in SA. Weather never interferes here....

@Bones what is this?! An I-see-you-and-raise-you moment? 🙂

    Touché. I admit defeat.

Nothing a referee fears more than hearing about a hot van Zyl rolling in.

IIRC at least his tackle technique wouldn't have earned him a card at this RWC...

And I have to add - that is one seriously impressive gut on Piet. A massive investment in beer / brandy-and-coke.

Yes, perhaps more noticeable due to having Stephen Donald's tailor.

hahaha. Stephen Donald by comparison would look positively skinny!

As an aside - Stephen Donald's road to a RWC final and medal is still one of my favourite sport stories.

Sort of a river rather than road, but yes it is very cool indeed. I was at the match in Hong Kong when he was pretty awful, so the redemption is pretty awesome.

160,000 readers of BBC Sport select their all time Rugby World Cup XV. A good team but Steve McDowell at Loose head for me.

Not a bad effort except they got BOD and Nonu around the wrong way.
