    Best ice cream

Rush Munros in Hastings, you can have some real fish and chips nearby too. 😉

Mustn't have wanted to venture into Hastings.

My once a year road trip special is a cone of Rum and Raisin (single cone two scoops). Just always hits the spot on a sunny day.

    Hatiest flavour ever!!!

I seem to like everyone's haziest flavour stuff. Turkish Delight, Cherry Ripe, R&R

I have never been a big fan of Rush Munros.

Dead to me ... and I hope CM lose for eternity, yes even to the Poo and BoP!

Not everything from the bay of Hawke is awesome 😉

RM is nice ice cream but just doesn't have a wow factor that equates with its price or hype. A little too solid and not creamy enough for my tastes.

I no longer feel so bad, clearly your taste is at toilet level. You'd be a good friend to have around Xmas to eat all the Turkish Delights and Cherry Ripes. I've got about 6 of each in the vegetable drawers of my fridge and I'm actually unsure how long they've been there.

Wash your mouth out with soap. 🙂 Although your comments over solidness suggests you've never actually had Rush Munros.

I've had plenty. One of the early places out of HB to showcase it in was in Cambridge when we had our restaurant there. They kept trying to supply it to us and kept giving me samples.
We only used our own recipe though and used to get it made by Kapiti (back before Fonterra brought them out).

I do like Cherry Ripe and TD's.

My dad used to order R&R and in hindsight I think it must have been because no one would ask for a lick!

Fish and chips - Leigh Eats.
Fresh fish from the fishery down the road still (I think - so very local) and fresh. Really good food all round. Great burgers and pies.

Only problem is that the owner couldn't get staff (apparently) and is now only open until 4pm which pissed me off as I used to get F and C for dinner every now and again. Haven't been back since (only a couple of weeks and not sure how long I can hold that grudge).

Savan's bakery in Warkworth is an award winner for pies, and they are good. As has been pointed out you should avoid the Hill Street intersection if negotiating your way into town and leave the same way - even on a bike. It's fucking dangerous.

Snell's Beach to WW is a 6 minute drive, or last Sunday 1 hour 40. If on a bike not so bad, but expect traffic (well gridlock really) if you head north, or anywhere around Matakana, for the next 3 months.

The worst ice-cream I have ever had in my life was in Napier and I defy anyone to enjoy it.

Was from Pacifica on Marine Parade (2018 New Zealand Restaurant of the Year)

Jeremy Rameka the Chef there is a bloody genius innovator. I eat there regularly although ironically I don't think its a patch on what is was a few years ago - awards notwithstanding.

Nowadays he only does a 5 course degustation but back in the day he did a'la'carte and a 10 course degustation. We had had the degustation with a couple of cocktails and wine. It was getting last. We got chatting to his (then) wife and Jeremy and 10 courses became 13 as he was "trying out a few taste experiments"

Everything was sublime until we got to his last experiment. Truffle ice cream. Made with truffle oil and truffle shavings.

WAAAAAAAAAY too heavy handed with the truffles. Almost inedible. I finished it because of politeness. We had scored three extra free courses but I really wished I hadn't. Wsa still repeating on me 24 hours later and almost soured the whole experience.

So - sorry. Not everything from the Bay is fantastic. Although much is. I'd happily move there except having been there about 50 times in the last decade I have decided its too insular. You see the same faces at every friggin event.

BTW Rush Munro's is massively over-hyped. Just like Mangonui fish and chips.

To return on topic though. You could easily argue for Hawkes Bay having best Farmers Market, Vineyards, Restaurants, Events, Beaches and Fly-Fishing just to name a few.

Trouble with a Best Of is nowadays its hard to find a place that doesn't juxtapose a great café, beach, river etc

    Except Palmie of course

Closed during summer but for the record I must list the Chocolate Eclair shop in Ohakune. Made using what must be some of the oldest bakery ovens still in operation in NZ.

    EDIT: deserves a photo

I like me some Whittaker's rum and raisin chocolate.

I prefer Italian-style gelato and there are some really good options around. Giapo in Auckland, Gelato 2U in Napier and Duck Island in Hamilton to name three.

That's not proper Rush Munros ... you have to have it in Hastings at the ice cream gardens.

@dogmeat At this rate half the Fern will be dead to me. I've never claimed everything was the best in HB, so not going to argue for some Napier based ice cream. I've met Rameka a couple of times but both times he was drunk and a bit of dick with it so consequently I've never eaten at his place.

Taking note of “ people “ who profess to enjoying rum and raisin ice cream for future reference when they say something is good .

While we are on the subject of Hawkes Bay their Festival of Lights is a sad, sad imitation of the New Plymouth one .

If you do happen to get past the roadblock north of Auckland another 'foodie' experience is to stop at one of the kumara growers that abound out of Dargaville and buy some fresh baby kumara. I know you can buy small ones in the supermarket now but they are stored and old. The fresher they are the sweeter and if you roast these little suckers up in a wood fired oven or over a fire they turn into candied awesomeness.
Eat with a dollop of butter, a freshly grilled snapper and put some salad on the side for the sake of it.

For boutique chocolates, Schoc Chocolate in Greytown really can’t be beaten. I’ve had chocs from dozens of places in Belgium and Switzerland and none come close. It’s tight on the main road too so very handy if you’re just passing through.

Best Farmers Market has to be Hastings on a nice summer Sunday morning.

@nzzp Giapo is a victim of their own success and become too commercial now. Still very good although I haven't been there in a few years.

Been 2-3 times this year already. Spot on about the commerciality, but ermagerd it's next level gelato. Seriously good stuff.
