Excuse me if this is a really stupid question but how will we know when UK has peaked? Is it to do with deaths or new cases? Does any Tom Dick or Harry know when we will peak?
I haven't watched any news today after seeing a headline on my phone that we have passed 10, 000 deaths.
-
@R-L I think it is new cases - although, how we can be sure when the community at large isn't currently being tested, I don't know.

On the daily briefings. hospital admissions is the data the epidemic experts use to track the peak of the thing. Deaths lad behind that by 10-14 days.
Increased testing numbers are skewing the number of detected cases

Boris Johnson out of hospital and resting at Chequers.
So Chequers official home of PM
10 Downing St is an office 'with rooms' in boutique restaurant parlance
Boris and his partner have a flat in Islington I believeHe's not working so No 10 is out
He's heading to the 'country' to convalesce but is being joined by his pregnant partner
Isn't this the same gaff Prince Charles made?

@Victor-Meldrew so our "new cases" is actually hospital admissions then as that's the only time you'd get tested?? Any indication of how close we are to the peak?

It seems new cases have plateaued. Daily deaths turn down with a lag. But may well settle at 400 - 500 a day with current level of lockdown. So not huge scope for relaxation. Some suggestion schools will go back after summer half term = 1 June.

@pakman really? I thought they'd be out until September? Might bring a bit of normality back.
So if we've plateaued do we stop talking about peaks??By squashing the curve my observation is that the peak becomes more like the high point of a plateau. Period of week or two when things not changing much.

Not quite.
FWIU, "new cases" now include those testing positive but not admitted to hospital, so it isn't a stable figure. The stable figure which the likes of Harries & Whitty say to watch are cases admitted to hospital with Coronavirus. These seem to be plateauing in London and other places.
Reported deaths lag by up to 10 days

So NHS staff being put up at hotels so they can avoid a long commute are also commiting the same "gaff"?

NYC is the hardest hit region in the United States (by far, and it isn’t close) and trend looking positive. Just 53 admissions in the past 24 hours. Way down.

A leading German epidemiologist who predicted the coronavirus crisis in Europe is now calling for governments to end the lockdown.
“People under 50 are very, very unlikely to die or get seriously ill from the coronavirus,” he says. “We have to let them get infected so they can develop immunity.”
Doesn't he watch the news?
Plenty of under 50s getting seriously ill and dying in the UK
Being a scientist, I think he means as a percentage of those exposed. Say, 0.01% would still mean 4,400 out of 44 million. Which is a lot in actual terms. Afraid that will be deemed collateral damage.

Not really sure where you're going with this, but my understanding is they aren't being joined by their family.

@MiketheSnow our friend's hotel is full of local nurses who are staying there to avoid bringing infection home.
