shouting to the media about being racially profiled
Yeah this is the bit that gets me. If the windows are blacked out, how do the cops even see who's in the car? As they say it was a narrow street so they weren't alongside them.

To be honest, half the reason I bought my car is because it looks rather gangster. I love the look.
That is how gangster that car is. Look at you driving around with your kilos of coke and steak knife sets.

We certainly look suspicious driving between my proper middle class street and my kids school at 8am and 3:30pm every day.

I can't decide which out of the Thule roof box, bike rack or "monster on board" sticker is making you look more suspicious.

@JC I've been pulled aside by officers twice in one week over here before - granted not in a car and I don't recall being searched other than opening my bag to show what's inside. One was in jeans/hoody/beanie the next I was wearing a suit. And no, I wasn't sporting a fro (and the rat's tail would have been inside my shirt).
So yeah, I own a suit.
So they thought you were a suit thief?
I think my eyebrow(s) gave away my heritage.

@MajorRage I saw that a little bit differently, basically because the police didn’t seem to have any probable cause for stopping them apart from apparently being able to smell cannabis. I think they have a point when they ask why they were stopped when a white person in a similar situation wouldn’t. If the police can back up their actions with stats that demonstrate they do stop people who look like me in the same circumstances I’ll happily get back in my box, but let’s just say I’m doubtful.
This is a direct quote from The Met in the Guardian:
"The Metropolitan police alleged the vehicle had been driving suspiciously, including driving on the wrong side of the road. The force said officers indicated for the vehicle to stop but it failed to do so and made off “at speed”."
So a gangster looking car,
It was an A Class Mercedes with privacy glass in the back. I don’t know about the UK but that’s a standard feature here. A gangster would be ashamed!
Why do they keep mentioning it then?
I don’t know. But probably because it’s easier than saying sorry. This is a screen grab from the Times and unfortunately it has a play icon right in the middle of it, but it’s clear enough to see that’s an A Class. Not an AMG either.

Only the rear side windows and back window are darkened. Blacking out the front windows is illegal. So you can easily see the driver. And for a good many new cars darkened rear windows are standard. My cars have it and it wasn’t something I asked for. And I’m far from a gangster.

So they were going in the opposite direction and swung around to stop them? Sounds tough on a single lane road!

So if the car was blacked out how could they see the colour of the driver and racially profile said driver?
Maybe they used the same heightened senses that detected cannabis smell.
The question that is still begging is why did they want the car to stop in the first place? You know, before the dope smoke, the driving on the wrong side and the speeding? Do they stop A Class Mercs as a matter of routine? Or maybe that’s a yes, but only in black neighbourhoods.

blackhigh violent crime neighbourhoods.Fixed it for you. Whether or not they should have been stopped or not is a question worth asking.
But they lost the entitlement to that question when they sped off.

Ermmm....man bun.
Guilty. Throw away the key. @Bones too.

In true Fern tradition, I shall now give my opinion having seen none of the evidence. To my mind the questions that need to be asked are:- Why did the police want to stop them - does that stand up? Secondly, did they speed off or did they just pull up at the nearest safe place. After that what was the police behaviour and what was their behaviour also.
Further to the first question though is that no matter why you think you’re being pulled, you comply. Questions about the why come later.

Ha ha, that's the same car we have - A class in Black. It's probably got the 'Night Pack' option (18 inch rims, blacked out windows and black detail around windows, and importantly electric memory seats).
It's a million miles away from a gangster car, despite being a nice zippy little thing for driving around Tokyo.

I think this can probably fit here? Seems BBC have since removed the tweet.

You seem very ready to believe the official line on this. The same people who said they sped off also said the car had blacked out windows (they are tinted in the rear), that they smelled dope smoke (no dope was found and the police refused to administer a test when repeatedly asked to do so), that the car was on the wrong side of the road (it was effectively one lane and they parked on the right hand side of the road which is legal in the UK), that the woman was hysterical (she can be heard shouting to police to be careful because her baby was in the back seat), that she resisted when they put her in handcuffs (for what exactly, she wasn’t driving). They were not charged with speeding, which may be understandable as the van wouldn’t have had any radar equipment. But they could presumably have been charged with dangerous driving or failing to stop, but they weren’t.
Look, I’m hardly a poster boy for BLM. And I don’t even have a problem with profiling really. But if the police are going to use it, own up to it and get public consent for the policy. Don’t invent pretexts and the moment when they realise they’ve made a mistake own it and apologise. I imagine if what the driver was saying is true and he’s been pulled over 14 times he has a right to expect that the police fine tuned their approach a bit.
Edit: Having since seen the man bun, I retract everything. Guilty of crimes against good taste. Take him down.
