26km? Fark that - I did THIRTY tonight! Just because I could. Averaging smack on 25km/h too. Feeling absolutely knackered but pretty proud of myself. Just for that I gave myself an extra half a protein shake. Good thing I had pasta for dinner too, because I would have collapsed halfway through on steak and vegies <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I reckon now I'll keep the same 20km course that goes east from my place as a "sprint" challenge for time trialling and gradually extend the southerly route in order to build up my endurance. I've also decided that I need to get some ground work in on the running/walking side of things, and will be employing that 8 second/12 second thing when I do to check its effectiveness. Nearly impossible to do the 8/12 when cycling due to differing road conditions...

Bad memories of Sunday's eating habits are already fading.

I'm not a road rider virgil - I live near one of the bigger motorways in Sydney and it has a separated bike path the whole way along it (40km in total).

There are silly bastards who ride on the highways over here like they own it. The force of a truck driving past at 110 is enough to blow you off your bike. This happened to several people near where I grew up (out in the sticks) who were riding a road barely two lanes wide on a foggy winter's morning. Its very hard for a truck that size to swerve out of the way or stop when you appear out of the fog 100 metres in front of them, moreso when there is another vehicle coming the other way and you have nowhere to go.

However Sydney is gradually coming around to bikes, with more and more bikeways going in. Canberra is especially good for the casual bike rider or commuter, with bike paths running bloody everywhere! Then again, they've had more time and space to plan...

Good to hear, thats what we need more of here,a guy was killed near where i live only late last year.Lost his leg then never came out of his coma.
The cyclists blame the drivers, the drivers blame the cyclists. To be fair id say its a bit of both.Nothing worse than driving down the street and theres 4 or 5 riders side by side instead of single file. And they dont seem to like taking notice of the road laws, going thru red lights etc.
Looking at getting a bike to get fit(walking just doesnt do it for me),but not keen on getting abuse by drivers or worse run over!

I ride mainly at night after work, and the bike path is well lit. I cross two minor streets on the way there, and the same two on the way back. Easy.

Keep in mind that bike legs ain't walking legs - you might get really good at the bike but not be similarly fit for e.g. running or walking. I've found I can ride solid for an hour but still get right out of breath just running after Little Aussie <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Yeah not losing any weight tho :nta

Weights last night. Managed to get through pushups with only minor back pain - have to really concentrate on tilting my pelvis forward to prevent my hips sagging, which is what I think caused the back pain.

Its a bit wet here in Sydney today, so tonight's exercise might involve getting footy boots on and heading down the oval for some sprint work. Need to work on the self-propelled fitness I think.

Have been slack due to my brother being in town (first time I've seen him in a year).

Did weights Friday morning just for something different. Humid bitch of a day it was too...

Went for a ride Sunday night - got a new PB time for 20km of a tick under 47 minutes, which is amazing given I haven't ridden for a few days...

Don't make weight the ultimate measure in your program. Since I started, my weight has gone up and down from my original weight, but I also measured body fat and found that it has started to decrease by a few % already.

You can buy scales that measure it, or you can have a skin fold test done.

Yeah I keep forgetting to measure chest, gut, butt. The weight doesn't really bother me, except to make training continually hard. Its shape that I'm interested in. Would happily be my current weight if I was chiselled <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I get kinda conflicted when I am out BBQing veges (eggplant, corgettes, capsicum etc) while I am BBQing, I am not doing any meat...

I have lost 4kg in 4 weeks, doing nothing more than altering my eating and ensuring I play 1 round of golf a week, 99-95kg, but most of that was just Xmas food, so was always gonna come off quick I suspect!

Now that my son is getting older, it is easier to find time to go down into the garage and do some weights, not that I seem to find the motivation often enough <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

yeah NTA, don't focus solely on weight. Get a tape measure and measure hips and waist. They are the important things.

Fuck I've been slack, so tonight I put the footy boots on and went down the local oval. Barely got through one lap, then did a bit of kick-chase for another lap and a bit. A couple of sprints here and there, and I was knackered. Damn right boot keeps raising a blister on my heel, so I'll have to plaster it next time or just wear my joggers. I think its something to do with the unco way I run, because the right heel lining on my joggers has worn through.

20 minutes of running around is easily worth 50 minutes on the bike.

Felt slack that I hadn't got more time in, so I did some pushups and crunches when I got in. Protein shake to stave off the hunger and then sitting on my arse. G'night mommy.

Chest: 130cm :shifty:
Gut: 118cm
Butt: 124cm

Not great measurements, but my last measurement was:
Chest: 124cm
Gut: 114cm
Arse: 122cm
So I'm bigger all over <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I know people have been saying not to focus on weight, but I think it would be help to have a structure week by week to measure progress. You've been working hard, but how to do you keep track if it's helping or not.

Depends what you are trying to achieve I guess, fitness and triming up can be seperate goals.

I know this is geeky (but so are you) but I've found tracking exercise and weight on a spreadsheet (including what I eat) to be really helpful. you can't hide the bullshit if your diet isn't good enough.

I track what my times are for various bike rides in Excel, just so I can easily work out my average speed, and thus endurance. My weights routines are all the same, but I increase the reps once I've achieved a certain rep goal.

Tracking what I eat would be fairly easy, as I eat pretty much the same thing every day, stopping at Woolworth's when I get off the train to work, and buying a salad pack and yoghurt to supplement the fruit I bring with me. and have reduced my crap intake to near zero - things like Subway replace curry, pies, McDonalds, etc. and I'd actually be eating takeaway food less than once per week. I do occasionally indulge in small quantities of chocolate :nta

I think part of my issue is weekends - I don't eat nearly as much fruit and salad on the weekends, simply because at work I have it on my desk and its the only readily available (and free) food in front of me. I don't eat crap, but I'll sandwiches for lunch instead of salad, which have more carbs that I'm simply not using. I avoid carbs during the working week to avoid the subsequent post-lunch crash.

I think having more walking/running in my exercise schedule will be very beneficial, provided the blisters are under control. Last night made me realise that, while the bike is fun, its simply not in the same universe as manual groundwork under your own steam. Sure the bike wears me out, but it doesn't challenge my aerobic fitness nearly as much as running. So its on with the joggers once my heel clears up.

Depending on what you are having at Subway, it could be just as bad as McDonalds so it's worth double checking (plenty of websites can tell you the amount of calories).

This time I've found "calorie counting" to be really helpful. I worked out my BMR (Base Metabolic Rate) to be around 1800 kCals per day, this is what my body will burn every day regardless of exercise. Anything above that I need to "use" during the day.

I'm like you I pretty much eat the same thing every day and have variety for dinner, so it's easy to know where I'm up to each day. I put my upper limit at 2500 calories per day, worked out how many cals my workouts consume (the smallest is 800cals) and try to be under 2000 after exercise/food.

Your BMR will be more as you are taller, so you will be able to eat more than me. But that gives you a decent amount of food. And it gives you an idea of how destructive a bag of chips or a bar of chocolate is to your weight loss.

Am treating the body like an engine and it seems to be working, and I know how much exercise I have to do to get there (am averaging 30mins cardio every day on average, but in 90min, 60min and 40min chunks on the on days).

Tracked all on an spreadsheet, it's a great bullshit detector. I have a column that states is I'm over or under 2500 cals. Only have two days in the last six weeks.

Yep - I always take the wheat bread option, no cheese, minimum sauce, and avoid the salami-based meats like the plague <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> At present, in a typical work day I will eat:

Three Organic Weetbix + banana + full cream milk
Yoghurt mix with berries and grains
Two apples at various points
Banana some time in the afternoon
Salad for lunch
Shedload of water
Dinner (something good - Mrs TA and I have been looking seriously at the amount of red meat we consume and decided its too much)

This week I'm going to put in a protein shake or two (mixed with water) in order to make the fluids more palatable. Only so much water I can drink - not a feckin camel.

Very good diet, any idea of the total calories on average?

Eating like that and doing the exercise you are listing you should be dropping a kg a week (or at least .5 of a kg). I find it easier to drink the water at work and in a bottle where I know exactly how much I've had, so sometimes I drink it all easily through the day or I'm sculling it before I go out the door.

2litres a day helps the fat leave your body too, needs water to do it.
