Kick off Sunday 4th September 4:35 pm - Forsyth Barr Stadium

Thought i just get it started, not sure i wasn't too many changes in line up, seems to have done well the last couple of weeks, we've allowed some come backs in the third and forth quarters, we'll need to stop that, cant ride out luck three weeks in a row

@Kiwiwomble lets talk about the Taniwha's challenge in a couple of weeks, that's the one you want to worry about 😉

Quotes from the pay-walled article below:

Hawke's Bay Magpies loose forward Marino Mikaele-Tu'u knows you can throw away all form and recent history heading into a Ranfurly Shield challenge. His side are heading down to Dunedin to play Otago for the Log o' Wood on Sunday afternoon in the final game of Week Four of the Mitre 10 Cup.

And Mikaele-Tu'u said by far the biggest factor in who emerges victorious will be mindset. "The team that wants it most will eventually lift that trophy at the end of the game."

Having played in one previous Shield challenge against Waikato back in 2018, the 23-year-old also knows to expect a hugely physical encounter in which everyone needs to be on their game.

It will be a strange sort of homecoming for Mikaele-Tu'u, who wrapped up his third season of Super Rugby for the Highlanders earlier this year. He said that gives him the advantage of knowing how to play under the roof of Forsyth Barr Stadium, which is a bit different to playing anywhere else.

Mikaele-Tu'u certainly made the most of that knowledge during a breakthrough Super Rugby Aotearoa season in which he led all players in offloads, while also rating in the top 10 for carries, clean breaks and metres gained.

He played a lot of his rugby for the Highlanders in the wider channels of the field by design of the team's game-plan, with the coaches looking to set him up against smaller opponents. Mikaele-Tu'u said the Magpies game plan isn't the same, but those game "pictures" where he can express himself out wide still arise at times.

His aforementioned standout Super Rugby season put Mikaele-Tu'u in the conversation for higher honours, and some have tipped the loose forward to be in line for a callup should the All Blacks add players to their Rugby Championship squad. He said there were always whispers like that floating around and he tries not to focus on all the chatter.

"If it happens it happens, but right now I'm just focused on Hawke's Bay and putting in a good performance."

so, there was an article about coltman getting the call up to the ab's, and someone commented the not unjustified opinion that the AB's should pick someone that can throw straight, i replied that the Otago lineout was running at 100% for the first few weeks of the NPC...and Liam Coltmans wife liked my comment..must be hard sometimes see all the shit

@Number-10 No reason to change the squad after last week's win. Good to see that Kereru-Symes has recovered from the shoulder niggle that kept him out of last week's 23. I love Ash and he has been immense for us, but Kianu needs more game time. If - heaven forbid - Dixon gets injured, Kianu will be seriously undercooked if he doesn't get more minutes.

Should be a cracking game. Great to watch as a neutral.

    Up the Magpies.

@Crucial @Stargazer Maybe not as I think there is some rule applicable to the Ranfurly Shield that defences can only be made between certain dates. The last was initially up until the end of September but that got changed a few years back to the first weekend in October. Thus there may not be no more challenges sanctioned. Remember the saga of North Auckland refusing to accept challenges after they took the Shield from Manawatu many years back. A precedent has been set that not all home games of new Holders need necessarily be deemed to have the Shield at stake!
Stargazer is bound to be up to date on the rules in this instance so we will await his proclamation.

Hopefully we win it, retain it next year, select @Chris-B 's Ta$man Invitational Chequebook XV in the crossover games - and then don't designate it a Shield match.

Hmmm, something tells me I've bitten off a bit more than I can chew.

I’m sure I read the other day all npc home games are defences, no dates mentioned

That's my understanding too, as the dates of the NPC often changes. Playoff games are excluded.

Joe Wheeler having a whine about the Invitational XV not getting shield challenges made me feel kind of happy.
