Meg should be used more on a show like Breakdown to analyse games. While he knows SFA about the laws of the game I enjoy his insight about how the backs are aligned and what was done to manipulate the defence. Mexted was the same on Re:Union in an analysis role, but was poor as a commentator.

I agree. Mex offered very good insight and analysis when he was away from the emotion/activity of a live game.

On 1014, I thought they were too dry. You have to bring some entertainment value as well as the analysis and good oil.

Murray used to pop into a place I worked all the time. He’s a good joker and takes the commentary piss takes extremely well.

    Mex:
"Mauger loves to come inside Merhtens" - one the most memorable bits of commentary.

Along with "the batsman is Holding the bowler's Willy" of course.

    I am such a child.

It doesn't get any better than Mexted and Loe's live on-air conversation, that quickly descended into an argument.

Some of the others were bangers as well....

    Pumping Martin Leslie especially....

His psychic energy talk probably had Nisbo scratching his head too.

I love The Breakdown. So much better than any equivalent show in the UK. All the episodes are available on the ABs Youtube Channel.

Jeff Wilson and Berndice Kirby-Oliver are excellent presenters, who balance having fun with asking probing questions of guests. All of their panel are good value, especially Glen Jackson and Sir John Kirwan.

All our shows are fucking terrible. I'm not a league fan but I'd happily sit down and watch 360, The Matty Johns Podcast or Sunday Night with Matty Johns for the entertainment value. I don't know how we manage to assemble casts of such average presenters. What's the show with the slightly chubby chick and all the recent ex players sitting around in their ripped jeans and hoodies talking absolute garbage??

If I had to list the shows I'd watch before The Breakdown, it'd include NRL 360, anything hosted by Matty Johns, PTI, The Jump and that one that always has Woody Paige, Frank Isola etc on it. And I love rugby. But our shows are so poor that I can't watch them.

That would be Bernadine Oliver-Kerby. 🙂

@shark I agree, ESPN leads the way with their panel shows. I've always enjoyed Around The Horn.

@shark Yeah I'm with you there. I find our shows unbearable tbh. I can't stand Paul Kent on NRL 360 or James Hooper for that matter but would still much rather watch them whinge and make up false rumours for an hour ahead of JK, Israel Dagg, the unfunny Joe Wheeler etc.

@African-Monkey Yeah, who created the fallacy that Joe Wheeler is funny? He probably is in a general day to day situation but if so, this doesn't translate to his TV persona, but Sky persists.

Sky seems far too happy to settle for average talent. It's almost as if they imagine a scenario in which someone will work well, and then run with it irrespective of how good the person actually is in practice. In Wheelers' case, it's like he's trading off one funny comment made six years ago or something.

They give Ian Jones - who has a fucking speech impediment - an extended run in commentary AND analysis roles.

And Grant Nisbet, who has been a terrific Commentator for a long time, is clearly past his best these days. He struggles to keep up with the play, and forgets players' names all too often.

@African-Monkey As much as I enjoy 360, the aspect I don't enjoy is all the print journos trying to swing their dicks around re who has the best 'oil'. Between Kent, Hooper, the young-ish Queenslander Peter something who desperately needs to find a new hairdresser, and worst of all that cranky old coot with the spectacles, they're appalling at getting into stupid arguments over who heard what from whom and who has the beat inside 'oil'.

@shark Yeah, that sums up NRL 360 haha, with James Hooper trying to put on the thickest Aussie accent he can, Paul Kent who just yells over the top of people especially when he's been proven wrong, and the old coot being Buzz Rothfield who needs to be put back in the cupboard with a 4 pack of stella. Most of them can't even keep a straight face when making up their rumours haha.

As I said though, I'd still rather watch that over Breakdown and that god-awful show with Kirstie Stanway, Bryn Hall, Joe Wheeler, Izzy Dagg and either Cory Jane/Mils Muliaina where they spend 30 mins trying to crack jokes and out laugh each other. It's llike an extremely poor attempt at trying to replicate the Matty Johns show. Don't even know if the show is still going or not?

It looks like there won't be any change in concept and personnel of the Breakdown. So we can probably forget about good, solid analysis, and keep on being annoyed by biased presenters chitchatting and fanboying. It's a pity that they didn't take the opportunity of the start of a new season, to make changes.

Hopefully, they'll invite guests who are capable of some good analysis. Glenn Jackson and Tabai Matson were good, last year. I'm sure there are a few more in NZ.

@stargazer 'like' for the info, 'dislike' for the lack of quality analysis.

Would be good to see James Parsons on there. Wonder if he an Bryn Hall/Weber will do their podcast again?
