    Remember when you were a kid, and monkey bars were somwthing you swarmed across without even thinking?  You know, are over arm one bard to the next, even going to bars at times, well how times change.<br />

    I came across some at a playground the other day, and managed to go across and back, just.  my god it was hard - so you FBers out there, give it a go, and reports in please...

    I go on the monkey bars with my boy sometimes (thats my excuse for being on there) and shit it is hard.  Funny becuase I can pump out chinups easy enough but theres something about the swinging on those bars that really throws a spanner in the works.  I guess its because Im about 60kilos heavier than the last time I used to do it regularly.

    Due to namby-pamby fucking parents committees, I am yet to locate a single one of those in my area. What they have instead are these plastic things with stuff like flying fox rails on them. Still, holding my weight via an overhead mechanism is bloody hard - its the other muscles you should lock up that are the killers.

    They used to have those 'suicide' ladders in NZ playgrounds, you know the sort of thing only skilled circus performers should be allowed near.  It was a basically steel ladder welded onto the frame of a swing and while you climbed it (if you could hold on) it would actually rotate 360 degrees. If you let go you would land head first on concrete and if you were really unlucky and in its flight path the 50kg plus ladder would swing around break your jaw and put you in a coma. A genuine death trap if ever Ive seen one.Â

    I tried this and actually found it to be much the same as how Free Staters regard their sisters - relatively easy. I do know why, though, as it's because I'm a wireman on 505s, Fireball and National 18s (and, soon - oh happy day! - I'm going to be going out on a 14  :happy:). Coming into and out of tacks and gybes, you're hanging off the trapeze handle on about three fingers, supporting your weight on that as you trim on before clipping on, as well as swinging down on the handle to grunt the boat flat and get a pump out of the tack  - marginally legal, but fast as all fuck. It's a functional fitness - I'm pretty sure RB and Bart could rip off my arm and beat me with the wet end - and it's the sort of thing that, if you haven't done since a kid, you lose the knack of doing.

    It's easier as a kid because you don't weigh 100kgs!

    Well, yes (although I've never been north of 94), but once you get 100 kgs swinging with the extra upper body strength you have now, it should be easy enough to keep it going.     It's really down to what you've trained for; if you want an example, even skinny bastards Laser sailors are almost unbeatable at arm-wrestling because they can just lock out their wrists at a 90 degree angle and hold their entire arm locked against insane loads - because that's what you do against sheet loads. 505 crews are even better (bigger, and the pull off the big-luff kite is scary); you just will not beat them unless you sail a 49er or 18ft skiff, where the initial sheet loads (before it gets moving, which is about 2 seconds before the loads drop waaaaaay off) are off the scale. Water-skiiers are the same; one of the best ball-snaffling loosies I ever met, the Gimp, used pull the ball out of anyone's grip because, being used to international water-skiiing, it was a piece of piss for him to do it.<br />

    Mind you, Gimp was the one who tackled a horse, so he may not be the most sensible of exemplars...  :nta

    yeah, functional fitness is the one.  Still - enforces the fact taht many trainers say that the best weights to train with is your own body weight!!

    Im yet to find a monkey bar which is tal enough for me to be able to hang off it (im 6 foot 7) even with my knees bent. But even if I could I reckon I'd have a bit of trouble.<br />
    I remember when the TV show gladiators used to be on and they would have that game with the rings hanging from the roof where they had to take each other down. They made it look so easy but it must have been farkin difficult to sustain their own weight on the rings, while the rings swing, plus trying to avoid a 130kg gladiator coming at you.

    Didnt old Horse beat a whole lot of bodybuilders/tough guys in a monkey bar competition on some 'Are you Tough Enough' show a few years ago?

    I'm certainly not quite the All Black lock height that aucklandwarlord is ( surely a leading candidate for tallest ferner ! ) but still pretty tall so this has been a problem for me....until the weekend. I was on holiday just out of Nelson and came across Monkey bars on an obstacle course ( probably high enough for Shaquille O'Neal to use if he felt like it ), lots of fun and felt just as easy as it used to bearing in mind that despite being about 40kg dripping wet last time I did them I had the pathetic UBS to match when I was little. 60kg later and my shoulders felt it the day after, no doubt due to all the weird rotations that they wouldn't be used to. The trick seems to be to get some nice momentum and not to stop for too long....now I'm back in Welly its gonna be hard to find any and as Virgil said the sight of a 30+ man in the playground does look dodgy unless I drag MN5 jr along.....even then eusa_whistle <br />

    The obstacle course was bloody good fun actually despite a suspected ( by me ) cracked or bruised rib from slipping over on the wall ! still busted out an "elite" time for the 30-39 age group so that was cool.

    I love training at playgrounds for this reason. Monkey bars and lots of other stuff you can use to train. I have a playground with a soccer field next to it where I live. Good for 100 meter sprints followed by pull-ups, push-ups and burpees. Its a great way to train. No gym membership required.

    Yes busting out a few chin/pull ups is a must when you're at the playground but don't go all out and then try another set shortly afterwards if there are hot girls watching, you'll fail much more quickly ! Best thing is to pretend your first set is about your tenth xzxcool
