Coronavirus - Overall

There’s another thing to watch: the New York Times reported yesterday that J&J has told the US government that they might have fallen as much as two months behind on their production schedule for the vaccine. No word as to what the problem might be. Adenovirus vectors have vulnerabilities of their own, with a whole set of manufacturing steps that are distinct from the other types. What you gain in not having everything reliant on a single pathway, you can lose when unique problems crop up. But overall it’s still far better to have a diverse set of things under development than not.

so, are we liable to still be in the same spot in 12 months time?
-
@mariner4life We have the vaccines now.

will they work? how quick are they effective? And by effective, i mean getting rid of this shit so the world can open up again?
remember, i last did science in 5th form, so i know less about this stuff than most things. And in reality i know fuck all about anything
-
@mariner4life You shoulda read the thread. But yes, they probably will.

which thread?
if you man the one from 6 hours ago, then i did. i understood nearly none of it, and it made me feel very dumb
-
@mariner4life Nah, there's lots some information on this forum thread.
The vaccines probably offer enough immunity, and should work with these new strains, so that herd immunity can be reached.
Got to produce enough and inject them though.

cool, so there is light at the end of the tunnel?
i got a bit pessimistic again last week is all, and suddenly started to worry my industry might die off and have to be reborn at a later date

A big fluorescent one. I'm aiming to be immunised and resume business travel by the end of July.

Overseas business travel? Surely not???
The bit we are still in the dark on is what level of herd immunity are we aiming for before we open the community up to Covid transmission, and what level of infection are we prepared to accept at any point in time. Is it [x]% of the population vaccinated (inc all high risk folk) then we open borders and allow [y] cases at any point, or is it related to hospital beds or ICU beds? Or is it more nuanced and related to clusters and strains in particular areas?
I wonder where the political positioning will be, and what the general NZ/Aus population is prepared to accept. In NZ especially its a big statement to stand up and say that we are giving up the hard fought position of elimination.
I also know a lot of people who don't want to get vaccinated (and their are not anti-vax ppl generally), I wonder what level we will get to. Is 50-60% enough?
-
@booboo quite a mix. Some say they'll get it, but don't want it early. Some think it's all been too rushed. Some ask what's the point, what's it going to change for them since they can't travel anyway. Others say they'll get it, but won't vaccinate their kids. Some have no fear of catching Covid at all.
I think me and the Mrs will get it when available, which will be late as we are in Phase 2b, one of the last cohorts. Have no idea when that will actually be

Head of Medicine at Oxford Uni thinks 70%, give or take.

Wasn't sure where to put this, here, "UK", or "Conspiracy Theories".
Decided here as, although it is essentially from the UK perspective, it is a universal issue.
It's a discussion on lockdown scepticism and various conspiracy type mindsets justifying said opinions.
Quite long.

Best line in the article:
"There is no shortage of stupidity on Twitter"
