damn - I've just learned Brothers Beer has opened a new bar in my hood.
Nice in some ways! To be honest, I've found their beer to be quite disappointing and grossly overpriced. I bought a 1L jug last time I was at their city works depot , and was charged over forty bucks! For a litre!
I'm voting with my feet, supporting non hipster bars now
The Southern X in welly charges 48 bucks for a jug of Craft beer but it’s one of those big ones which can easily fill four handles with a bit left over. 40 bucks for a litre is ridiculous.
Handle? One (sniffs first) drinks their craft beer from a tasting glass surely?
Doom Bar, c'est non?

@nzzp I have to concur The Birkenhead joint had sold out of the only Brothers I really rate. Price points on the beers looked OK $11-13 / glass - until I asked and found out the glass was 330 mls.
Jugs weren't quite as bad as you found in the city but 31-33 for a litre is still a joke.
I might go again as the food menu looked interesting but otherwise there is no temptation to walk a km past a freehouse with better beer in bigger glasses for the same price and where they give me a 10% discount or even the, even closer, gastro pub that has panhead for $41 for 1.8 litres and where I also get a 10% loyalty discount.

@voodoo also, i find Dans craft beer selection to be pretty ordinary, and hit up First Choice as a better option
Dans is fucking great for Red Wine though
I'm a bit of a heathen/amateur at craft beer, I tend to just buy Crankshaft cos I know it's great

@voodoo lol MN5 is going to lose his shit

Fresh hop day today in Auckland. 5 pubs, fresh hop beers, a bus. I'd call it a pub crawl, but that doesn't sound classy enough.
Tempted to report on the ratio of full beards to women, but will just drink with my mates instead
It won't fill the bitter ball of disappointment the Blues leave in me, but it'll help

Le bus de l'alcool? Le bustour de la lamentation?

The bus was literally called the brew bus. Go figure 😀

Beervana had an astonishing amount of decent women to perve at last year. I’m hoping Brew Day follows suit.

Oh right, as usual I didn’t read the post.
To an Australian Tui probably is a craft beer to be fair, after all it does say East India Pale Ale on the bottle.

Fuck, that infuriates me no end.
I assume that the addition of "East" means they're allowed to avoid actual definitions. But when you think about the meaning/etymology of IPA - surely an EIPA would have even MORE hops/booze - as it would be the farthest point in India to travel to.
Fuck Tui. Fuck it right up its arse and every other orifice. Tui angers me so much that I have actually developed an irrational hatred of the eponymous bird - despite it actually being an handsome and estimable bird. Fuck Tui.Typed before above rant esclated:
Likewise - a Greene King "IPA" they started producing just before I left the UK - with an ABV of around 3.5%. I'd like to say that was the reason I left the UK. -

Just spent a long weekend with my best mate in Melbourne. Obviously with COVID we haven't caught up in 18 months but worse, his Mum passed away in the middle of the 2nd Melbourne lockdown so I couldn't get down there to give him some support. I decided to drive there and back in case something happened with the borders and I could bolt for the NSW border if needed. What I didn't take into account when making that plans was that I was likely going to be pretty pissed most of the time.
He's been into his craft beers for only a couple of years but is getting better with them and his taste in Whisky runs to the heavily peated and iodine flavours.
Since it was a pretty meaningful catch up, went and got a few decent beers and whiskies. Also took a few (6) whiskies down from my collection.
A better view of the whiskies
The Bruichladdich Octomore 10.3 and the Ardbeg Ardbog were the two special bottles I got just for the occasion. The Highland Park Valknut was his contribution.
A really special weekend but damn I feel exhausted. 4 days of non-stop drinking including a trip to the wineries of the Yarra Valley and a beer crawl visiting 2 Brothers, Boat Rocker, Wolf of the Willows and Dainton.
