    Am looking at purchasing some fitness gear; am looking at a punchbag/speedball etc or a rowing machine. <br />
    <br />
    I've used rowers at Gyms before and know they give a pretty intense workout if you want, but also know that going hard on a punch bag is pretty intense too. <br />
    <br />
    Am looking at something that I can use regularly in the knowledge that I don't need to spend hours at (that I don't have) like running, weights, cycling etc....

    What sort of rowing machine? You get what you pay for..

    Concept 2 is the rower I would go for.  But ask Bart, he bloody  lives on one.

    LOL, yes, concept 2 rowing machine - think you can hire one to start with for a 3 month period to check if you want to buy one - $20 a week or so - costs about 2 grand for a new one, but worth every cent, I am almost up to my ten million metres now...<br />

    Start by rowing 20 minutes a day (target 5,000 metres) and move up from there - I log all my metres on the concept2 website so you can see your progress over the years.<br />

    At the moment rowing three times a day, morning, lunch and evening, at least 20 minutes at a time, but that is getting pretty extreme!!<br />

    Check out [url="http://www.freespiritsrowing.com"]www.freespiritsrowing.com[/url] to see some real maniacs - these blokes are rowing 30-40,000 metres a day, check out the metre board, insane.  I have clawed my way to 25th from 40th over the last month!!

    was looking to spend about a grand max...guess looking on Trade Me wouldn't hurt...cheers

    Or you could get a bike - for well under a grand you can get a mountain or road bike that will last you a few years at least with a bit of simple care. Then you'd have enough left over for the punching bag.<br />

    Get on the bike, ride for half an hour to cover 15+ km, then pitch up at home and punch the crap out of that bag for a while.

    have the mountain bike, have a weight bench and weights; just wanting something which I am gonna get best 'knackered' in least time I guess....which is why I thought Rower or Punch bag, as both I have used and both are pretty intense in fairly short time with reasonable coverage of body (ie cycling just legs)

    Fair enough - then I'd suggest you by a punching bag and do cross-training:<br />
    <br />
    2 days a week, go for a ride on the bike of at least 30 minutes - preferably 45. When you get back, do some lunges, deadlifts and squats with your weights.<br />
    <br />
    3-4 days a week, do boxing circuit with upper body weights - bench, chins, dips, military press. Do sets of weights and then 30 seconds rest before slipping the gloves on for a 1 minute boxing set. Take the gloves off and straight back into the next set of weights.<br />
    <br />
    That way you get an all-over workout, plenty of aerobic stuff in there and more importantly mixing up your aerobic and power work - better results in the long-term.
