It's the diving and the ref intimidation that grates me. Watching 10 blokes surround a retreating ref when a decision goes against them is a terrible picture for any kid watching.
have to say thats some of the reason i enjoy the lower leagues so much more, obviously still happens but no where near the same extent

With modern tech they should be able to get rid of a lot of the diving. If there's clearly no contact, the VAR should be issuing YCs to stop the player doing it again. I'm not sure why they don't crack down on it - maybe there's an element of it being part of the game that people are OK with? A feel like a lot of the complaints come from people that are not diehard fans.

There are reasons that they are not diehard fans. Me included. Diving is one of them.
Rugby is of course perfect. No problems with the laws, refs, nothing. All good.

yeah you hear stories about euro / sth american fans having no issue with successfully "conning the ref", even seeing as it as a skill in its own right
Even without in-game VAR, I don't see why they don't do post-match citing - and hand out considerable bans (not fines) for those guilty of repeat offenses

That was used in the early 2000s. France beat Italy in the 2000 Euro final with a golden goal. Last used at the 2002 WC.
I'm sure time constraints were the reason it was discontinued.
Golden goal was never timeless.
The theory was it produced even more negative football in the extra time, avoiding the single fatal mistake.

I recall after 1994 (which was the first final decided by penalties) that they were looking for alternatives. That’s when golden goal came in. Another one was taking a player off every 10 minutes until a goal or something like that. 27 years later….

@rapido My comment about time constraints was more related to the TV networks not wanting to broadcast a game that could go on forever, often for the reason you state.
Note that all 5 golden goals in the WC/Euros have been scored within the normal extra time (90-120 mins).

It's a bit like the argument that crops up in proper football every now and then about the differential between a try and a penalty being too narrow.
Everyone gets the arguments (both ways) but is wary of unintended consequences. 'Encouraging' foul play if the differential is too great turn it into a kick-a-thon if they are too little. Well maybe not everyone gets the arguments.....
Before rugby gets too condescending when was the last time a half back fed the scrum straight, lazy running etc.
A good game of most sports between two evenly matched teams played in the right spirit is a thing of beauty. Negative tactics and niggle in whatever form spoils most sports spectacles

pull the keeper, a team can leave someone back there but they cant use their hands, loosing to a wide shot from halfway wont cause any drama...
Thoughts on the english players taking their medals straight off? i noticed it and thought it was a little "off", but if we take it as a sign of how much winning meant to them, and second wasn't good enough, why bother giving them a medal or at least right then. if the players dont want it to be part of the ceremony then ditch it

I thought the refs did a very good job in this tournament and let a lot go rather constantly pinging for dives/incidental contact.
The diving itself doesn't annoy me as much as the theatrics on the ground during/afterwards. I'm not sure why the constant need to 'sell' the foul after it has been given.

It's supposed to be "foot" ball but one guy gets to cheat (well one each). That won't be a popular opinion either.

I mentioned it above and don't think that we will. Most of us have a mirror. Some just don't like to look in it.

Yes.
Most of the time I love test cricket for that reason.Australia should be left out because of the "right spirit" and the niggles.
Although TBF for most of my life it wasn't two evenly matched teams either.Football does seem to a lack a bit of the "right spirit". Call them friendlies if you want but trying to fake injuries to milk a penalty is pretty obvious.
Hate that it is sneaking into rugby. -

Still not what the penalty was for though and it wasn't as prevalent.

England have a team to be proud of and with all the young talent coming through, they will be a good bet in future tournaments. Kyle Walker is their only player over 30.
Under pressure, Southgate needs to learn to trust attacking flair more. His team got far too defensive and parked the bus too early last night.
But I can't see England winning a major tournament without getting through a penalty shootout somewhere. The goalkeeper was superb last night. Employ a specialist coach to work with the penalty takers. I can't see the sense in giving the 5th penalty to a 19 year old. Trust your senior players and make clear with seniority come obligation.
Most importantly, there is still a huge societal issue to address in terms the moronic and racist element who crawl out from underneath rocks when the England football team do well. Ugly scenes in Leicester Square and around Wembley Stadium yesterday. Some vile racism online. Just horrible to read Black British parents posting online that they had worried about sending their kids to school this morning because of the racism they might face.

Is that because black players missed the penalties? If so that’s totally fucked up. But I do wish people would stop conflating things that happen online with the real world. The sewer that is Twitter and social media is thankfully not a reflection of the world we live in. God help us if it was.
