Hey Sydney based posters, did anyone know about this protest ahead of time?
I only knew about it when friends messaged me saying they could hear it near their places.
I assume it was set up via FB or some other such social media. It's weird that media weren't reporting on it before it happened as it seems so coordinated that they would have come across it.
We knew about it because the mum of my oldest kids friend was going... She's a hippie anti-vaxer, I imagine she would have been mortified at how it turned out, but even so my kid ain't playing with her kid for ever
14 days!!!FIFY

How do you think she would have expected it to turn out?
I think she thought it would be a few hundred hippies walking 2m apart. They follow all the rules, she just doesn't agree with them. I doubt she thought there would be 10k of them being violent and abusive to the cops

No matter what she thinks that was still them not following the rules. They were all gathering as a group to march, it doesn't matter if they're 2m apart.

I wouldn't be hung up at all if they were distancing properly. No different than the thousands of folk on the beach concourse. They're crossing within 15cm of each other.

Well what's going on in Aus should put the NZ govt on notice that they need to really ramp up our vaccination program!
How long before Sydney is at the point where they have lost control?

Are they? Is that what they're all like mate? That's a bit of a pompous statement. Those who genuinely believe in freedoms and liberty and resent the government treating us this way, locking us into little zones around our homes? Those who have lost their jobs, their businesses, their savings?
Are they expected to suck it up? Do they not have a right to process?
Obviously the way it turned out was fucking wrong, I'm not condoning it at all. But I wouldn't unfriend anyone for assuming the protest was going to be different and went along.

My glib comment appears to have touched a raw nerve, apologies mate. I sympathise with those who have suffered. What they all need to realise is that everyone suffers. It is only a question of how long that period lasts, and the best thing to do is to tow the line and let life get back to normal ASAP

No apology needed, my tone was a bit rough, didn't mean to seem aggressive, was just trying to articulate that I do have some sympathy for the view that this is starting to become a bit wrong, the willingness of government to just take away our freedoms and liberties like this. And I really feel for the retail small biz and the labourers and husband and wife cleaning operation.
You say everything suffers, and maybe that's true, but there are certainly degrees of it. I can work from home, get a regular pay check, and aside from boredom and the fact that I can't get back to NZ, it's really not that bad. I could survive another year of it. But that's just not the case for so many and I fear we have lost empathy for them

I couldn't work at all for all lockdowns L3 and higher. Wasn't worth it on a variety of levels. Patients of mine who had to work through were fried after being flogged harder than usual. Those that could work from home got off a little lighter. Obviously hospo suffered hugely. Now we are back to relative normalcy hospo is booming. One way or another you just need to get out of lockdown
-
@canefan I'm very lucky, I can work through any level, but many of my clients cant, and whats worse (for them) is they have to keep paying, so initially, no impact on me, but any prolonged lockdown will affect me.
Many have kicked on had booming turnover since (range of different trades/occupations) I have only had 2 clients who have ceased trading due to covid, and one imported luxury items from France (they were looking to get the product made in NZ, as sourcing it was the issue, not what they were selling)

Lots of people in lots of different sectors I know have been crazy busy since last year. Staying out of lockdown for as long as possible is key

You said she was specifically going to protest, that's not the same as people walking on a beach. A protest is a gathering whichever way we look at it. Gatherings are not allowed for public health reasons. I can't meet 10 of my friends out even if we stay 2m's apart. I can't travel more than 10km from my house to meet these friends. None of those protestors should have been able to do the same.
I can be sympathetic for the reasons of some who might have wanted to protest (not all because lots of the signs on show were clearly not from people wanting to express their financial stress) but until the public health issue is over they should't be violating rules, rules that are in force with the aim of getting us back to normal.
What they did wont help us get out of lockdown quicker, as you noted a page earlier it could mean we could be in lockdown longer.

Sorry mate, but I totally disagree with you on this and suspect we will have to leave it there. I don't have an issue with people protesting, it's been a feature of our free speech democratic lives since forever. They should have done it with respect for the distancing rules, but I would suggest there were a few very different groups of peope at this event. It's a bit trite to take the view that we have a right to protest, but because of the 10km rule then you have that right taken away, when it's the very thing they are protesting.
I agree that NSW has tried harder than anyone else to keep stuff open. Feds second. But we've been let down by both and people are frustrated. I asked the question a while back on NZ, as to how many times would people accept being put back into lockdown. Everyone has a limit at some point.

What do you think back to normal looks like? The talk coming from governments sounds like we will all need vaccine passports and will have to accept being locked in our homes should a new variant appear. And who knows what the plan is with the borders?
None of that sounds normal to me. That sounds like massive government overreach. That sounds like we're giving up freedoms to incompetent (at best) and/or power hungry politicians who none of us would trust as far as we can throw.
The protests aren't against the vaccine. They are against governments forcing citizens to take the vaccine, and they are even more against governments locking down the country all the time. Labelling these people retards for protesting to retain their freedoms is just too simplistic for me - there's some very valid points that should be properly discussed, throwing insults is just childish. Also, these protests are happening all over the world right now, it's not just a fringe group of extremists. Although the more governments try to just dictate the terms to people, the more extreme people will become.
