depends - does he think Bridge is one of our premier wingers or not?

If Robertson was the AB coach do you seriously think he wouldn't have selected Bridge in his squad? And he would have picked Bridge ahead of Clarke last year too.

The problem with having a coach going straight from a Super/provincial team to coach the ABs is that they tend to revert to selecting the players they know and are most familiar with. We saw that with Mains and Thorburn in the early 1990s and Mitchell and Deans with the Cantablacks.

Robertson is pretty consultative (still reading my emails Razor…) and I reckon he would’ve been on the phone quick smart with Rangi about the Blues players that he would’ve been eyeing out.

And let’s get the facts right about Mitchell and Deans, they did select Maling, Willis, Douggie and Tana 😎

Plus the Myth, correct? And Mealamu? And McCaw of course. And Carter. You can say a lot about those crazy bastards but they got the process started for what happened in 2011.

and dropped Christian. For that, I will always wallow in bitterness, bile and anger when I think of The Journey

But unearthed Auckland’s brightest star and made him an All Black.

    Ben Atiga.

A dwarven All Black, but an All Black nonetheless

Other than Robertson, who else would put their hands up?

    Gatland
    Macdonald

The best coaches didn't even bother applying last time (which tells you something abuot the process): Joseph, Rennie, Brown

Well those named coaches already had jobs lat time with countries who don't ask for applications, so a little bit of a furphy there mate. Joseph was already with Japan, and Rennie was with Aus

Alright folks, time to put your money where your mouth is.

I'm still firmly of the opinion I've seen enough that I'd be looking to move on from Foster. I don't think he has developed much of our game, and selections have been consistently haphazard. To me, on his body of work, he should be gooooooorne

    77% winning record
    Retained Bledisloe twice
    Won Rugby Championship
Record winning score against Australia (under super coach Rennie to boot)

    Lost 23% of his games
We've held the BC for 19 years and this Wallabies incarnation is incredibly green
Won RC missing the World Champs
The '98 side would smash these Wobblies. They're dross

couldn't disagree more. They didn't throw their hats in the ring because the process looked so rigged to reappoint Foster.

So what do we think he needs to do to keep his job ?

Could the boks games decide it ?

if we lost 2-0 would that be see ya later ?

I think if he went though undefeated this year it would be difficult to replace him despite what people think of him .

A somewhat likeable buffoon is not who I want as AB coach myself. He just doesn't come across as very smart. Personality and some selections would attest to this as well as his history.

yeah im not in his fanclub either ,

but he was that same person when they appointed him, so you would think it would require something bad for them to do an about face , and if this season is successful well , its hard to see it happening isnt it ?

    unless im missing something ?

That's the problem - they are essentially appointing the coach, so they should just do that. I don't see it as much different to a board essentially appointing a CEO (after some secret meetings/interviews). The NZRFU is the problem.

The glimmer of hope is that the reappointment isn't until the end of the year. Of course, actually finding an alternative that isn't active in NZ right now isn't likely.

most likely outcome: Foster gets reappointed, Robertson comes in as assistant (perhaps along with another ).

Unfortunately, I agree with all of that. Unless I am missing the same thing.

@nzzp Hasn't Robertson said, head coach or nothing?

Why Would Robertson want to be associated and connected to Foster's coaching campaign,He may die with Foster without being able to have a shot doing it his way.
Sensible to wait and hope he gets a chance as Head Coach,Then at least if he fails it all on him,And he had a real crack at it.

Yup and he is signed until a yer after the RWC so at least we won; lose him. Rennie et al, whether they saw it as a rigged process I don’t know. But the fact that the process was so late they would have to try for ABs coach and turn down offers they had already. Dumb, the other countries did their process much earlier, NZR left it far too late.

I’d expect retaking the No 1 ranking, which will be hard, and not losing the up front battle to SA, Wales, France, Arg, or Ireland. A loss in there is OK, 100% is hard. But no improvement in our ‘physical dominance’ type stuff means he should go.
