    Do the first 5k in 20 minutes, even if you are feeling good.  Then the next 5k you can up pace, and you'll be there before you know it!!<br />
    Even if you start out feeling shit, keep that frist 5k pace at 2:00, as you might come right anyway, even if struggling over that first few ks...<br />
    <br />
    Easy from here, where I have not rowed more than 30 minutes over the last couple of months!!  Lots of 20 minutes and 5ks, but nothing too painful!!

    Good stuff, Duluth.<br />
    I have been off the Concept 2 for ages - combination of being crook for a while, and through summer I discovered swimming, at the age of 40 and got a bit hooked. Doesn't really help the times on the rower. Just got back into it in the last couple of weeks - 5 km still over 20 mins, but cranked a couple of good 2.5 km including 9.44 today after a 40 minute bike session.<br />
    Just gotta build up the distance.<br />
    40 minutes for 10 km seems, well, kilometres away!

    I'd always go the other way if I was trying for 10k - ie try to get to 5k in 19.30 - 19.40, then just cling on for as long as possible. Actually I'd aim for 2.5k in 9.30 & then 2m / 500m splits thru to 5k.<br />
    <br />
    If I try it the other way I find I have no chance.<br />
    <br />
    That said I haven't done 10k this year  <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol:' />

    Heya Mog, me either!!  10k seems a million miles at the moment!!  I usually goe hard out for as long as possible and then hold on for as long as possible too!!  But have also rowed within myself as above and been left with juice in the tank at the end.  When you get to that last 2k, and the last 1000 in particular, all bets are off, lungs be damned, full speed ahead.  So if you can be in control for those first 8-9 k!!

    Ouch just done a 40:36<br />
    <br />
    First 10k attempt in just over a month<br />
    <br />
    I injured my trap doing wieghts and couldn't row for two weeks.. it's taken this long to get any half decent pace back. Only a short time off but it takes so long to close to where I was  😢

    you might be surprised Duluth.  I have done sod all miles lately, and am 'only' 10 seconds outside my PB for 5k.  So you should get your rowing legs back pretty quick I reckon.  Just slot onto your normal pace, and then hold on as long as you can maybe?  At least, that is what I am going to try today when I do a 5k time trial!!

    It's good to finally get it done after having so many rows 10-20secs too slow<br />
    <br />
    So your machine will arrive with plenty of time left to prepare for the rowing marathon?

    <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol:' />  I know.  It was glorious coming home and putting on 10 kg's worth of Mince and cheese pies.  Been home for nearly 2 years and still moving the excess

    First crack at 10,000 and punched out a 37:11.1. I was on 37.02 with 150m to go but was pushing it too hard and started to dry retch. Its not cool vomiting in the gym so I slowed down a bit. I reckon I can crack 37 with a bit of effort.<br />
    <br />
    I still need a 5,000, 1,000 or 500 for the full collection but getting there.<br />
    <br />
    Bartman your time is amazing. Respect.

    After a couple of dodgy 10,000 attempts (including one where I didnt finish it), I pulled out a 36:45.6 this morning. Felt quite strong as well. Hopefully that will come down a bit more.

    great time Cutter - 10k is a bitch - you go out hard, and then keep going for the next 35 minutes!! Only way to get better too is just to keep doing it, and doing it, and doing it...!!<br />
    <br />
    The most mind fucking of all the distances - although the 2000 is too, and then the 5, and then the...<br />
    <br />
    No, the 10,000, as it takes forever, so you hvae to be mentally stronger for longer.

    Thanks Bart. I'm doing one a week so hopefully my mental strength will improve as well as my fitness. The time I didnt finish it wasnt because I was physically incapable, it was just a 'mind' quit. I had gone out hard, but I should have just backed off to a managable rating with a view to finishing irrespective of my time.

    yeah, it is hard to do that though - back off and finish anyway, when you do that you are mentally shattered, and just want to quit.<br />
    <br />
    I am the same, I have never quit because I physically could not row anymore, always the mind that is weak.<br />
    <br />
    The old, 'body willing, mind weak' thing.<br />
    <br />
    Am going to get back into rowing again next week - have been walking and running with the Mrs, and 3 weights sessions a week over the last few weeks, and loving it. But time to up the ante again.<br />
    <br />
    Those 10k times are most impressive though Cuts, well done.

    Another week, another 10,000 - 36:41.9. Its slowly coming down.<br />
    <br />
    You back on the erg yet Bart?<br />
    <br />
    Two guys from our rowing club are doing a 300,000m row in 24 hours charity challenge for MS this weekend. Now that is a mind bender.
