Usual bits and pieces and some good functional box carrying, turns out the potential future mrs MN5 has a lot of heavy books which she piled into a big box and made me carry up a couple of flights of stairs while we were moving.
Also tire slams in the rain and wind are pretty satisfying. Only about a five minute workout but all action and the forearm aches afterwards aren’t as bad as they used to be. Sweeeeeeeeeeet.
On the road for work this week, hope I’m on the ground floor at the motel, plyometrics probably sound a bit weird if your downstairs neighbour doesn’t know what is happening.
My youngest is obsessed with improving his vertical leap and loves box jumps. Only problem is he had a habit of using besser bricks. I say HAD because it inevitably went pearshaped yesterday and his shin hit the edge of one of the bricks. Time to invest in some proper padded plyometric boxes me thinks.
Yeah I think stretching and explosive stuff and knees over toe workouts help that quite a bit. In saying that my upper body is more explosive than the lower body overall I think.
My lower body is only explosive in the sense that my knees blow out.

Haha !
Get the boy to watch some “knees over toe” guy on YouTube. As he is young and not a broken wreck like you and I he should benefit hugely.
I’m not sure my vertical leap but it was definitely more than enough to get in the NZ Police if I wanted to. The trick is to swing your arms on the way down and “explode” up.

Yeah, fark I'm soft. Have to tell him to stop being so rough with me sometimes. It's like being attacked by a farking chimpanzee.
YouTube has its uses. He's down with all the techniques. Wants to be able to slam dunk a basketball. Hopefully his unfortunate accident hasn't traumatised him.

Get him doing these if he isn’t already, they’re on the menu as part of tomorrows motel morning workout. My oldest can smash these pretty well, youngest not yet given he’s carrying a little bit of extra weight and not as much muscle but he’s trying !

Oh yes, that. He’ll be ok.

3 Sets of 15 flying superman push ups in the motel this morning followed by some knees over toes stuff which I’m surprisingly decent at. I think having an ex who is a Pilates instructor rubbed off on me.
Flexibility and mobility is SO important. Fuck being one of those sad old blokes who moans about aches and pains in the back and knees. I have enough other shit to gripe about so no time for that nonsense.
-
A bit of an awkward couple of days of auctions, moving stuff and taking the old man out for pizza and beer. Not a lot of time for much exercise so hopefully I don’t turn to mush. I’ve also got the other half’s family thing in Hawkes Bay this weekend so that will involve a fair bit of eating and drinking to put it mildly. Will try and find somewhere to bust out a few chins at least, do a walk up the peak and hit a tire with the hammer if I get a chance.
-
Trucking along, not much to write except still keeping things up as best I can. Frustratingly my right ( weaker ) elbow is still in pain despite all the Deep Heat and ice I’ve been putting on it and it makes a couple of push up variations extremely tough. I might have to take it easy on certain exercises and perhaps being 44 means it is taking longer than usual to recover.
I’ve also stopped hitting the tire and have started hitting sand at the beach instead to fuck myself up even more ! Seriously, this is an even tougher variation as you don’t get the bounce back you do when you hit the tire and you have to “muscle” the hammer back into position more ( again, this is one to do when there’s no one around as you tend to get funny looks smashing big holes in the sand ).

That's a nasty injury. Hopefully it heals asap.
He he. You literally pound sand.

…..amongst other things if I play my cards right with the mrs….
A nice start to the morning with some Sonny Liston jumps and Superman push ups in the hotel, again, lucky I’m on the ground floor. No elbow aggravation with these whatsoever but if I occasionally bang it on the car door or whatever I know all about it.
Have also planned out the obligatory big walk around the waterfront late in the avo for shits and gigs.

Double blast of the legs this morning with ninja jumps and sonny listons ( for want of a better word ). Legs fucken burning after that which is a good sign.
For shits and gigs last week I walked past where I used to practice my vertical leaps ( wearing jeans and semi formal shoes ) and had a go and blitzed my previous best by a good few inches ( ie instead of touching the gutter I could have easily grabbed it and hung on ) which was pretty cool despite not actually doing the movement in ages. @Rancid-Schnitzel tell the boy if he’s still into his leaping to practice lots of other moves as well which seem to supplement them well.
Nothing else particularly exciting to report. Like us all I’m trying to delay the ageing process as much as humanly possible. Living in my apartment while the good lady and I are house hunting is very limiting for indoor exercise but we’re making do. She’s setting up a pilates mat in the lounge so who knows, I might start that again !
Elbow still stinging each morning but gets better as I move around during the day. Throwing lots of air jabs with my shadow boxing seems to get it right as well, rather concerningly when throwing my straight left at my boy while doing some rough housing we heard some rather loud “clicks” as each punch was thrown. Ah well, I am 44 years old !

Saw a good video on YouTube about how important it is to continue to do functional exercises as you age because once you stop it becomes a type of "lost power" that is very difficult if not impossible to get back. Case in point is box jumps. Never do those and the next time you may be required to jump down from even a modest height your knees will explode or at least feel like they have.

@rancid-schnitzel use it or lose it, applies to your physical and mental side.
Was reading something the other day, and an activity as simple as brushing your teeth, doing it with your less dominant hand is great for your brain!

Yeah good for the cognitive abilities and all that……fairly sure I’;ve never brushed my teeth with my right hand so I’ll give this a go tonight !

100%. Particularly if you’re carrying an extra 50 kg than the last time you attempted them.
Old knees and excess weight are a disastrous combo.

Have had over a week of doing nothing except for about 10-15 minutes shadow boxing a day. The body is thanking me for it particularly the joints. I recommend this to recharge ( although can’t imagine some of you keener blokes actually doing it ! ) It’s if that week becomes another…..then another…..then issues might creep in.
Xmas piss up season is upon us though so I need to get back into it and plan accordingly so as to not blob out completely over Summer. With my Scots heritage being a “Bronzed Adonis” is out of the question but I need to at least maintain “Pasty Adonis” status for when the t shirt comes off on hot days.

Jeepers ! Haven’t updated this for awhile, have been doing more of the same old just a bit more socialising at this time of year which is understandable. Just bought a nice new house and have already staked out ample garage space for workouts for when we move in Feb. Loads and loads of good walking spots too !
As always will do my absolute best not too put on too much ( if any ) Xmas weight.
