I don’t think Wilde lacked energy after the bike work he was fresh as a daisy at the end. That run by Yee was just something else.
Penalty robbed us of a finish though. Must have had a super slow mo to judge that. He certainly had his hand on the helmet clip but it looked like the bike was in before he clicked it. Would have been a difficult decision for him if leading at the end whether to risk a DQ on a challenge. -

I wonder whether the 10 second penalty compromised his run a bit - maybe he realised he was going to be fucked. He did look to be labouring a bit on that uphill stretch though - but, then on the last downhill Yee looked a bit like he might be paying for his efforts.
Pretty disappointing not to have a sprint finish - more administrators not giving a fuck about my entertainment?

Wilde interview makes that one tougher to take, didn't know what the penalty was for until after the race. Surely more than enough time for coaches to watch the replay & tell him to not take the penalty? At the least you'd think, they'd be able to communicate with him what the penalty was for. Also said in the interview that the plan was to take first lap in the run easy then take it back to Yee on second lap. Robbed of a ripper finish!

Communication with his team seemed pretty poor that he didn't know what the issue was. If he had something in reserve I assume he didn't have enough to try and push his lead out past 10 seconds to try and win gold in spite of the penalty

Does seem crazy to place the athlete in a situation where they have to make a choice while competing and at the same time ruining the contest. If you can’t review at the time then at least apply it as a time penalty rather than a penalty box

Based on the video and the rules in this article I reckon Wilde has a good chance of having his appeal upheld.
When is the bike "securely racked"? I'd say, arguably when the front wheel hits the front of the rack and you can see that happen when the back wheel comes off the ground.
At best, it's a massively pedantic hometown call.

My guess is that the particular official is looking at 'no hands on the bike' as being indication that it is secure. Wilde seems to say that he always leave a hand on for as long as possible as he 'leans' against the bike for a second to find his feet.
He unclips the helmet while he still has a hand on the bike but that doesnt mean that the bike isnt securely racked as he doesnt adjust it from that moment which proves that it is secure.
I get the rule but this is a 50/50 call at best, a hometown advantage at worst.I dont usually watch tri but this format was a pretty cool T20 type one and I'd watch it more often if there wasnt knowledge that an overzealous official would ruin the ending our outcome.
People want to watch true contests not ones dictated by twatty officials (sound familiar?). UCI used to be terrible in this respect but have fixed it quite well. -

I know nothing about the sport and rules but if the penalty is justified based on the current rules. Then the rules seem a bit silly. It seems like his bike with in the rack before he took off his helmet.
edit. This if correct seems idiotic too. Surely it can be done a lot quicker. Like in 1 day.
The protest may take up to 30 days to adjudicate on and could possibly result in Wilde’s promotion to dual gold with race winner Alex Yee.
