How is a sell out, this?

The occasion was massive but equally intense. A world record crowd of 34,235 for a women’s rugby match packed in Eden Park was expectant of the host nation at their first World Cup in New Zealand

As I suggested in the match thread, are people buying tickets to not go? Or was there 12k+ people that went to the first two games but didn't stay?

There were a lot of tickets handed out as comps to schools by sponsors. I guess that not all of the kids had parents that could take them.

A lot of bullshit spotued all around then. Makes NZR etc look dumb to go off about the awesomeness of, and demand for, womans rugby, and get 2/3. Honesty would be a better policy, 30k sold 17k given away, or whatever.

I was really shocked when I turned the game on

Look at it this way. They drummed up a much bigger crowd than was originally planned for. There was some hype to get the saleable seats sold but they managed it.
You are quite negative about this tournament I must say. Did a women’s player turn you down once or something 😀

Nah I really enjoyed the rugby, and @Dan54 point above is my view too, but:

    1. I think the girls are getting stuffed by the decision to only have female refs. None of them are up to the standard of the players. I think there's just one female full time ref in the world, and it'll take a major choke by England for her to get the final. Although maybe that's why the games are so fast, they just let everything go!
    2. When you see multiple articles, and hear multiple mentions of the sell out, and literally the first thing I see on turning on is an almost half empty stadium, it was an instant excitement killer. It's always worse when something is hyped, massively so (like a dozen articles about it in my feed, more than there were about the actual game), then fails to achieve anywhere near what was promised.

I'm off to watch 3 live games today, so no I'm not negative about it, but I am critical of those things above

Most are professional refs, and many also ref on the sevens circuit. You can argue whether they are good enough.

Here is the full list. All female apart from some TMOs.

Thanks for the info, but doesn't say if they are full time pros, or not. And sevens is not 15s!

BF ref is not: Aside from rugby union, she works as a biokineticist

    Gogger-Orr isn't
    Sarah Cox is
    AURÉLIE GROIZELEAU semi pro
    Amber Mc isn't
    Joy Neville isn't
Hollie Davidson is (didn't know that, well done Scotland)
    Lauren Jenner isn't
    Clara M isn't

So I was out by 150%, only 2 pro refs and one semi pro 😉

Having a male TMO for a female ref is funny.

'This is the picture I see, do you agree?'

    'Ummmm, yes'......through gritted teeth.

Remaining NZ pool matches are at small grounds as is NZs quarter (guaranteed to be at Whangarei).

Hope they have shaken off the 'big statdium' nerves before a semi.

If everything goes to rank now we need England to rack up bigger scores than us. If we can come out of the pools ranked second it could place us up against (likely) Canada in the semis with Eng playing France. One of Canada or USA will probably rank 3rd.

Making the final has to be the minimum target and there is a hard way to get there and a slightly easier route.

One of the first things my wife said, commenting on the ref(s), was isn't it sexist in itself just to have women and not the best?

Japanese women are good to watch, especially now they are playing a team closer to their level

It's not even that - their ruck technique and handling is superb

So fast and great at keeping tha ball alive - they'll struggle tho, when some of them are the size of my 12 year old son who has some medical issues!

@Machpants no doubt they'll get belted physically. They don't have imports they can rely on like their men's team.

Scotland have some genuinely fit burds playing for them. Second row would be a good weekend.

Wales under the pump, many many penalties, but still no card. Refs are still not good enough. Scotland No 8 just stretchered off. Wales was all over then first half, but equal in the second

Oh previous scrum was a proper tightness, ball kept nicely at Scotland's feet until Wales collapsed it. Should've been yellow there, better late than never

Yeah that was what I was wondering about, they didn't say why everyone was standing around and weren't showing any shots.

Everyone in Northland saw that was a yellow, apart from the ref. Jeez

Edit I'm sure the ref was saying 13 and holding up 13, luckily the correct Welsh player copped it and went off anyway
