@MN5 this says US and UK sales...

https://bestsellingalbums.org/artist/4131#:~:text=FAITH NO MORE sold over, which sold over 1%2C237%2C500 copies .

But at the end of the day, who gives a shit, if you like them that's all that matters, especially since I don't expect @nepia knew more than 1 million people in nz and aus....

Hey, I was using some sort of mathematics projection of numbers ... might be a pointer as to why I never went on to study any maths after 5th form.

You’re definitely right and I was taking the piss with my 100 million remark, it’s what you as an individual likes that matters.

I still doubt the accuracy of that list though….The Real Thing and Angel Dust were huge albums and you hear songs from both of them all over Hauraki and the Rock. I’d put them at about 10 million each worldwide at least. The albums after them were less popular though.

lol what? don't be ridiculous. you gotta cross genres and markets to sell that many albums. It would put them among the highest selling rock albums of all time. FNM are fucking great, but a band with one charting single ever is not shifting 10m units of one of their albums.

I'm shocked that my fav FNM album is reportedly that far behind the preceding two in sales. King of a Day is fucking awesome.

    Would it though ?

Still well behind Appetite for Destruction, Use Your Illusion, The Black Album, Blood Sugar Sex Magic etc.

Like I’ve said before, I know they’re not in that league but I’d still put them higher than 5 Million worldwide. Quite a number of well known songs, doing all the right 90s things like appearing on Letterman, Arsenio Hall, various festivals etc.

King for a Day is terrific, it got me through a tough work trip to Hamilton late last year ! amazing album.

no shit. enormous albums with broad appeal and multiple high charting singles, and i think most went to #1 in the US. And i am pretty sure only 2 of them claim to have shifted more than 20 million units.

AFD was the biggest selling debut album of all time. Google says 30 mill worldwide.

You appear to be correct about the others although I’ll keep googling and try and prove you wrong. It’s internet way.

Those numbers just seem low to me. Europeans and South Americans love their hard rock too.

I just had a quick look at an album sales site. GnR were huge, even the Spaghetti incident sold 5m. Appetite was 5th biggest album of the 80s.

I wonder if a trimmed and combined (quality controlled) Use Your Illusion would have topped Appetite's sales?

    Interesting time waster.

a cool stat i saw last week, that, of course, i have forgotten the details of

Metallica Metallica, since its release in 1991, has not had a single week go by where it hasn't shifted 5,000 units.

cannot verify the accuracy, does explain how its shifted so goddam many

@MN5 that means jack, unless FNM is now uncool, supposedly with less than 5,000,000.

TBH I'm not sure what constitutes cool or not, I mean if you like something, then it is 'cool' to you?

Seriously? Damn, everyone I knew had a copy of The Real Thing when it came out. I thought it would have sold over 5m on it's own.

The inter-web, (which is never wrong) says The Real Thing sold 7,500 copies in NZ & just under 1.3M globally - 1M in the USA

@mariner4life Metallica has sold 33M in 31 years, making it the 15th highest selling album of all time
There's been 1600 odd weeks since it's release so it has averaged over 20K of sales every week. Obviously, the majority at first release but that makes your stat quite believable - and unbelievable at the same time.

What does this even mean these days, to shift a unit? My son listens to music all day every day, and he’s never spent a cent on it - do the recent numbers take into account Spotify plays or something?

Everything on the interweb is only half-true. In this case, there are indeed hot single mums in your area.

I gave them my credit card details and everything, they say they’re too busy to meet face to face though.
