@Tim According to L'Equipe, he's shortlisted by Toulon for the forwards coach role, next season.

@Stargazer While he may or may not return to New Zealand, what is becoming obvious is that we are likely to see a slight reversal of our coaches going overseas. This presents an opportunity for coaches to return which seem highly likely, whether for head coach or assistant coaching roles.

I'm tempted to retire to the South of France, judging by the waistlines of Kiwis there, the food is pretty good.

Ben Herring is a guy I could see returning to coach a NZ SR team in the future, he's a promising young coach.

Do you mean as opposed to being a proven coach?

@Tim He coached them when they took the Shield from Waikato in his first year from memory and then again when they lost it a couple of games later.

I mean the training facilities are just down the road from his "home".

a fair question, you do have to balance that against the quality of player he had to work with

the thing that table doesn't make clear is people like donnelly, herring and the browns have those win percentages whilst being in the championship where as Gilbert, ross, mains, cooper and hunter had better ones whilst in the full comp...to a man theyre better coaches i'd say but we also just had better players

Dave Rennie is in line to coach the Blues in 2024:

"The Herald understands the Blues have identified Rennie, the former Chiefs and Wallabies mentor, as MacDonald’s preferred replacement. A Blues representative is believed to have recently visited Rennie at his Australian base to present their case.

As well as the Blues’ interest, multiple Japanese clubs — one thought to be Kobe Steelers — are firmly in the mix to secure Rennie’s services for next season, too.

The Blues can’t compete with those Japanese offers but of all the New Zealand Super Rugby franchises their significant private investment backers, the likes John Hart’s consortium of businessmen that purchased a 40 per cent stake for around $1.7 million in 2021, leave them better placed than any Kiwi rivals to top up New Zealand Rugby’s head coaching salary.

Blues sponsors Barfoot & Thompson have previously been highly influential in luring Benji Marshall, Beauden Barrett and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck to the franchise through significant third-party deals.

While it is unusual for a coach to move from the test scene to Super Rugby, particularly having ticked that box, leading the Blues is an enticing prospect.

Beyond this year the Blues squad is stacked with depth; their academy system is strong and relationships with the regions have drastically improved.

Should the Blues miss out on their pursuit of Rennie former Auckland coach Wayne Pivac, who was sacked by Wales last December in favour of Warren Gatland, is another potential option, or All Blacks assistant Joe Schmidt after he assisted MacDonald at the Blues last year."

@kiwi_expat Does this mean Leon is an All Black assistant? Thought Scotland were chasing him. What is Joe Schmidt doing next year?

All guess work, the only thing we know is razor is ABs coach, Joe is not interested in ABs. Leon is probably moving on, but could be anywhere, body language, yeah whatever. And the herald article says blues are keen on Rennie, but I'm sure they are, lots of teams are.

Anyway #33 said Joe is the next ABs blues coach, so that's set in stone 🙄
