What’s the depth like at prop? What’s your opinion on Northland signing a prop from Brazil?

I wouldn't mind so much if these type of signings were used to mentor the young guys to help bring the next wave through where we currently have a skill/experience gap. I like the look of this years squad and I like the fact it is not much different from last year but would like to have seen at least one young prop prospect to get a development spot in the squad. Hopefully this is part of the reason Trainor has been signed - probably a decent mentor for Tama Anderson as a utility back.

    @taniwharugby said in Northland 2023:

Hhmmm, a starting 15, I'll assume we wont get Ofa much.

    Props: Apoua / Adams
Hooker: Toss up really, all 3 capable, but I think I prefer Olsen
Locks: I'd like them to give Craig the early run, but I think they will start with Hallam-Eames and Caird
    Loosies: Rush, Matich and Ma'u
    Halves: Nock, Reihana
    Centres: Goodhue, Tua
Back 3: Rush, Moorby, Trainor (although I'd like to see more of Tama Anderson at this level, while small, has gas and skills)

Looks pretty strong. Think we're going to miss Macilai - look to be missing a bit of speed/X Factor out wide. If he stays fit I wouldn't be surprised if Sweetman gets plenty of game time at lock. Adds a bit of size and mongrel to the pack.

Our hooker should be chosen by having a throwing competition at the last training session before the team is picked. All 3 are good players but none inspires a hell of a lot of confidence at lineout time.

@Chiefy07 we quite often lack strike ability out wide and Jone has provided some of that in recent years as a power winger. Same in loose forwards where I can’t remember when we last had a power player with ball in hand. Some young loose forwards I have yet to see in Woods, Jurlina?

Nevertheless with smart rugby we can still be effective. The team finished last year looking good.

I think we look light at 1st. Dan was playing 40 mins last year and while he remains a superb goal kicker I had reservations about his speed (plus he is another year older) and ability to play on the advantage line. Hope he has his tackle technique sorted - having spent time on the sidelines a couple of times.

Similarly Rene looked slow last year so not sure about his form this year?

@kev yeah Jone will be a loss, although the coaches last year were quick to start others, from what I hear of injuries, our starting wings are looking like Rush & Pisi...

I only saw Wellsford play once this season, and Rene looked disinterested and didnt have alot of impact, that said, he was pretty good in the pre-pre-season game a month or so back v Auckland by all accounts, but with everyone on deck, I think he is a bench option at best behind Goodhue/Tua, guess they could look at Goodhue/Ranger mid-field and Tua on wing, but that isnt a quick mid-field.

Just rather they play anyone but Blake.

Hawkins has been pretty solid most of the club season, he plays the game, reads it quite well, so often see him pop up to make a try saving tackle multiple plays away from where he was last...his lack of pace has always been an issue, and yep, he has had those 2 reds on consecutive seasons, hope he doesnt go for the 3-peat, because he has been a valuable bench player in recent times.

About a 5/10 of 10 performance from Northland against a very good Auckland team yesterday, some really good stuff mixed in with some average , on several occasions the same old culprits making the same old mistakes
Given this was the first hit out for the Taniwha , it’s gets a pass mark in terms of physicality in the forwards they stood up also taking into account who was missing in the backline
Set piece scrum was pretty even bar one scrum when Northland got well and truly beaten on the hit , line out operated well .

One thing I will say the attack which was used looks really good , but you need the players in key positions to activate more accurately, I guess being the first hit out I should cut them some more slack

In the Forwards , Rob Rush is an absolute beast , put in a great 60 -70 minute shift ,Jonah Ma’u the longer the game went became more prominent and Saimoni Uluinakauvadra is absolute work horse , I’m really not sure if he’s a 7 though , half 6/8 ..
Wilton Rabolo can scrum no question , went on to the tighthead side in the 2nd half with Robb Cobb on the loosehead with Matt Moulds at hooker , the scrum looked rock solid
Allen Craig and Sam Caird were great value , workrate plus
In the backs Milo Harris ,Reihana and Moorby were all solid , Ranger still showing an uncanny ability to beat players one on one although it’s fair to say no longer has the legs especially when it comes to defending
Full credit to Waipu club player Ross Gladish , from London works as a teacher at Bream Bay College ,came into the squad on Sunday as cover for Tamati Tua , apart from being run over by Faletoi Peni , played very well considering the quality he was up against
A much improved 2nd half from the Taniwha after being down 22-5 at the break.
Just a bit of an update on the injury front and availability

Eslie Fono , Out for the season
Jordon Trainor foot stress fracture , this is not good possibly season ending
Heremaia Murray , possibly next next Saturday against Canterbury more likely week 2 against Southland
Tamati Tua , available next week against Canterbury
(stood down from yesterdays trial game ) due to being a dumb arse
Sam McNamara possibly available next week
Real concern is he’s played no club rugby
Rory Woods , should be available for either Round 1 or Round 2
Jack Goodhue available from Monday onwards

Blake Hohaia and Ross Gladish to be released

@Steven-Harris thanks for the game review and update. We look under prepared for the start of the season re game time, carrying a few injuries, players not playing. Be interesting to see who they replace Trainor with if he is out?

@Steven-Harris that's interesting on Fono, he seemed to move ok for HH 3 weeks ago and seems OK in some of the social media stuff.

Interesting they called Gladish in instead of Mitchell Reader, who in my opinion was one of the most consistent 12s in the club comp...is Gladish in the trial squad?

@kev reckon they coulda had Tevita Nabura in the squad, he has pace to play wing, but he's playing for East Coast...but if they call anyone in, maybe Nathan Salmon would be worth a crack, plays midfield and FB, quick enough for wing too, will just be good development in the squad.

Interesting call given last year they often started McNamara at 8 when fit (also ignoring the year the coaches ignored matich) Rush at 6 is a given, so maybe Matich will float between 8 & 7?

Only others in the squad to lead would be former captains, Olsen or Moulds, but I do expect a bitnof rotation with our hookers, so maybe that was a factor.

That said, if we had more players with Matich's workrate and attitude, we'd be better for it, so think this is a good call, and deserving too.

Here is your 2023 Semco Taniwha Captain and Vice Captains.

Matt Matich, Taniwha # 910, will captain the Taniwha this year. Matt has played 55 games for Northland and plays for club Western Sharks.

Rob Rush, Taniwha # 964, and Jack Goodhue, Taniwha # 925, are this year's Vice Captains. Rob has played 19 games for Northland and also plays for club Mid Northern. Jack has played 12 games for Northland and his club is Moerewa/UK.

Congratulations to our Captains and Vice Captains!

Time to resurface from TSF hibernation. Hard to believe the NPC is upon us again, only seemed like last week I was watching us in the quarter final against this week's opponent Canterbury!

Once again we have a solid squad that should put some good results on the board. Was a bit disappointed we didn't have more of a preseason as by all accounts we were still piecing things together against Auckland.

Good to see Matich named skip, the guy has always been a leader amongst the group, and he will be well supported by Jack and Rob Rush. These three definitely won't take any rubbish from those in the squad that like to play up off the field either. We're definitely in safe hands.

Hard to judge exactly where we will end up this season with next to no preseason, but with the players we have I would expect us to win more than we lose.

If there was ever a prime opportunity to topple Canterbury its first up at home. The team need to take advantage of this opportunity, it will set the momentum heading forward. Going to be a tough ask but we can definitely do it.

Here's to a hopefully successful 2023. Up the Tanis!

Good to see Northland finally getting their act together in the teams under the NPC squad with teams playing dev games as well as age group stuff, and publishing these.

Just need to things to be run professionally at this level too, longer-term this has to be better for the npc side.

decided to go and watch the Northland dev side hosting BOP this afternoon...weather was meant to be nice, it wasnt...was breezy cool and damp.

In the end, a penalty right on FT by BOP saw a 13-13 draw.

Northland dominated the early exchanges and after about 5 mins wing Dylan Hook went over in an acre of space, only to drop it cold in the act of putting the ball down.

Turns out, this handling error would be the story of the day for both sides as they fumbled thier way around.

1st 40 Northland should really have been well ahead, reckon they had 80% territory and 60% possession, but couldnt get over the line enough...

A well worked try saw Brady Rush stroll in for a try to finally get some reward after 20 mins, then more pressure unable to be converted even while down a man when O'Neal Rongo was binned for apparently raising his arm going into contact, it was then BOP time to attack for the final 5 mins of the half, with Northland looking like they had seen off the BOP only decent challenge, earning a pen, kicking for touch and then a careless slap down of our own lineout saw BOP snaffle a try right on halftime to lead 7-5 at the break.

The second half was just as scrappy, with both sides trading penalties, when in the final quarter Northlands bruising 8 Revelation Letoga with some impressive leg drive marched 20m upfield with multiple defenders trying to bring him down, some quick clean out and quick ball put young Lucas Payne into space and didnt even need his express pace for the 30m run in that put Northland back in the lead.

The final few minutes was a comedy of errors by both teams, but Northland halfback Donald Boyd had his kick to touch with time up partially charged, BOP regathered and worked through the phases earning a penalty on the halfway line, which with the wind at thier backs, sailed over the posts to earn a last minute draw.

Seeing Brady Rush playing today, I am hoping he doesnt get another shot for the Taniwha this season, although alot of his play would fit in well with the AB backs right now with lack of brain engagement.

Revelation Letoga was a handful around the park with some storming runs and good workrate, certainly a big enough lad to move up a level, probably needs a bit more fitness.

Jordan Trainor had a run, a few good touches but play didnt really go his way, Kobie Scutt ran things well at 10, although a couple of crucial kicks to touch (out on full ended up being costly)

Deon Mau'u in the centres worked hard, also could do with fitness too, althogh one very costly decision to let a ball bounce put BOP in prime attacking position that lead to a penalty score.

Like the look of Lucas Payne, was in Blues age group last year or year before, has had a long term injury I believe, but has put on some good muscle but doesnt look to have lost any pace, another youngster who I think I'd be giving a shot at the next level before others...

Open side Brady Foster has a great workrate, tackling, cleaning and carrying.

    Auckland Development 45
    Northland Development 28

The Northland development squad with will lament giving their Auckland development counter parts too much possesion and field position in the closing 15 minutes in what was a competitive and entertaining fixture played at Orakei Domain in Auckland on Saturday
The home side laying on 2 late tries to ease away to a 45-28 victory after leading 26-20 at the break.

Auckland Development are always a tough nut to crack especially given the personal they have at their disposal and this was no exception, several players with Npc experience along with 3 NZ under 20 players on deck , one in particular Sam Hainsworth Fa’aofo who normally plays at 7 turning out at in the number 8 jersey showing some superb footwork to beat the last Northland defender to touch down for Aucklands first try after Ryan Nankivell had given the visitors the early lead with a penalty

Nankivell would spark a superb period for the visitors picking off a loose pass from the hosts to outsprint Auckland first five Jock Mckenzie from 70 metres out
Halfback RKelly Rush would would be the next to score taking advantage of a retreating Auckland pack with a quickly taken tap catching the defence unaware to stun the hosts
And to put some icing on a great 10 minutes ,Tama Anderson would finish of an outstanding team try to have the visitors up 20-7

But knowing the quality of hosts ,they would hit back 3 times before the break reverting to their big pack to rumble over from close range from a lineout drive , the 2nd coming from a brilliant out the back pass which freed Jock McKenzie up to touch down and right on the break lively halfback Ngakete George diving over after some great work coming from the Auckland forwards , a double blow for Northland with loose forward Brady Foster being sent to the bin after series of team infringements

Auckland storming back to lead 26-20 at the break and they would make Northland pay with the numerical advantage ,Auckland Npc winger Joel Cobb touching down 5 minutes into the 2nd half .

However theres a lot to like about this Northland development squad , they refused lye down, the forward pack working overtime to contain a very good Auckland pack and when given the chance many of the attacks were sparked by Brady Rush playing at fullback , Rush who has featured on the wing for the Taniwha looked right at home in the 15 jersey sparking many of Northlands attacks .

Rush always looked to get his 2 wingers Tama Anderson , and Lucas Payne who has returned from a long term shoulder injury involved , it would be Payne who would finish off a very good backline move after 10 minutes of the 2nd half to tighten the game up
A Josh Davis penalty would bring Northland back to 28-31 with 20 minutes to go and looking to have the momentum on their side .
A brilliant run down the touchline from Rory Woods possibly lead to the key moment in the game , Auckland Fullback Byron Smith getting across to make a try saving tackle on the rangy loose forward and picking up a defensive penalty
In the closing stages , there was some great defence from Northland holding out Auckland after some mulitple phases from the forwards , a chip kick out of defence also proved also to be pivitol , with the bounce eluding the Northland player and going straight into the arms of Auckland first five Jock McKenzie who gleefully accepted the gift
Auckland and Moana Pacifika lock Sione Tuipulotu finishing off the scoring for Auckland after Northland made an error chasing the game

Despite going down the visitors pushed hard right to the very only being denied by some very good defence in the final play

For Northland Brady Rush was dangerous everytime he touched the ball, always look to link with his outsides Anderson and Payne , first five Ryan Nankivell and halfback Rkelly Rush also impressed , Rush not afraid to take on some of the bigger Auckland forwards and working well with his first five Nankivell

In the forwards a very solid effort from the pack ,locks Sean Sweetman and O’Neal Rongo got through a ton of work as did the looseforwards Jurlina,Foster and Woods especially
Bruce Kauika Peterson and Tahi Subritzky added plenty of go forward from the bench and Jayden Kemp was lively when he entered the fray .

Not the result the lads wanted but its fair to say it was a very good performance against a very good Auckland team despite the end result.

Do apologise its very Northland centric but i have written this for the Northland website
For our Auckland posters , Ngakete George and Jock McKenzie and were outstanding , George picking up a try and Mckenzie picking up a brace , controlled the tempo really well even when Auckland were down 7-20
Byron Smith at fullback was always a constant threat bringing the ball back an Pascalle Dunn a constant menace with ball in hand

In the forwards NZ U20 player Sam Hainsworth Fa’’aso who normally plays 7 was outstanding but in the number 8 jersey
The word is hes being chased by Ta$man , so Auckland better move quickly
Cam Church was busy at 7 , as was lock Xavier Cowley Tuioti as a his locking partner Sione Tuipulotu was fantastic at lineout time both on his own ball and disrupting Northland ball
Pakuranga tighthead Sam gave a good account of himself as did Jordon Hutchings at hooker whom i hearing could be on the move north , is orginally from Dargaville.😉

@Steven-Harris have to assume RKelly is related to Brady & Rob? Brother or cousin?

As I said to you last week, he came on and played 7 v BOP, so def not afraid to mix it up.

Did Lucas Payne get much space, he looked pretty quick against BOP in his few touches last week.

As I have mentioned before, I'd like to see Nankivell given a chance, is a good size for a 10, has a good kicking game and good accelaration.
