<p>Not such good news for NBHS supporters as they got rolled 39 - 31 by Wellington College in Wellington this afternoon. Napier did have three of their best players out and it showed in the first half where things did not go well to put it mildly. Plenty of missed tackles, poor passes and less than desirable kicks. Despite that a couple of opportunist tries were scored, think centre Mitchell Drew got them both. The second half saw a marked improvement as the forwards started going forward, lineouts started to be won, scrums were not being dominated, passes stuck and more importantly tackles were being made.</p>
<p>With about ten minutes to go the scoreline stood at Wgtn Coll 27 - 24 NBHS but Wgtn got two quick tries before Napier struck back with a nice converted to to get withing eight points with a time virtually up and that was that.</p>

<p>On a brighter side for Nepia and Gibbit I did hear a progress score of forty odd to bugger all in favour of Hastings BHS in their encounter against Saint Patricks College Kilbirnie. Not sure at what stage of the game that was.</p> -

<p>Not a bad result for Napier BHS, considering they've not had the best of seasons and were missing important players like the Tremain lad. </p>

<p>Hastings BHS beat St Pats Town 47-3. They've been so impressive this season; I can't see Wellington College be the first to beat them next week.</p> -

<p>Yes, I listened to the radio commentary of the game and they were incredibly dominant all game. I really hope the Top 4 semis and final are televised. Should make for much better viewing than the Magpies games, which are depressing.</p> -

Been chatting with a few friends and family back home about the loss in the final. Apparently Hastings were missing their captain, their number 1 halfback and their number 1 lock.
Even so, it's a real bummer to get so close and just miss out by a point.
Still what an awesome season for Hastings. 2nd best team in the country and smashed the daylights out of the Super 8 and Hurricanes comps.
Hope they can carry on next year and put in some more decent performances.

Interesting interview with one of the Napier BHS players in the NZ Schools training squad, Tim Farrell.
21 September 2016 By Adam Julian Farrell Fights Odds To Make NZ Schools’ Squad “I thought that was me. It was scary stuff,” Tim Farrell recalls of his health struggles in July. The deputy head prefect and First XV prop at Napier Boys’ High School was “rundown,” “sick” and captured glandular fever. “I was in hospital for three days and had to spend two hours on a drip each day. I had a swollen throat so I couldn’t eat solids,” Farrell laments. In the two and a half weeks Farrell spent off school things got even worse. “I had an abnormally enlarged liver. I could hardly move and had to take antibiotics. I was told if I played rugby again I could have ruptured my spleen or done something worse. I was devastated. It was the worst month of my life.”Remarkably Farrell has made a full recovery and was selected for the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ training squad to prepare for two internationals against Fiji and Australia in October. “It was a massive surprise to be picked. I can’t wait to have the ball in my hands again. I don’t know a lot about the competition, but there are going to be some big, fit boys at the camp,” Farrell enthuses.
Between 2009 and 2012, Napier made the National Top Four three times in four years. Success has been much harder to come by since, but Farrell says he has no regrets in 2015. “I made the First XV in Year 11 and that was a tough season. We didn’t play very well and I spent a lot of time on the bench. I felt I had a point to prove last year and I did that, but again the results weren’t great. This year we were up and down, but the brotherhood was strong and we came through some adversity.” At the start of the season long-time coach Del Whyte was diagnosed with cancer and had to step aside. “That was a big blow for the team. Thankfully Del has recovered. He is growing back his moustache and is back up to his usual antics,” Farrell laughs. The Super 8 match against Rotorua Boys’ High School was no laughing matter. Rotorua travelled to the Hawke’s Bay as the defending National Champions and Napier had a major setback before the game. “One of our prefect’s father died from cancer that week. It was a real shock around the school and we wanted to prove something. We got in their faces early on and they had a player sent off for punching. We won 24-23 which was pretty special,” Farrell says. The ability to “get in people’s faces,” is something that has earned Farrell selection to the Hurricanes U18’s twice. He was rarely bettered in the scrums in three years at Napier Boys.’“I have always been a prop. I never had much pace. I love the confrontational side of the game. It’s a great challenge.” Head Prefect and Farrell’s “best mate” Will Tremain was also selected for the camp. Tim’s father John Farrell, a local sales rep, played for Hawke’s Bay during his rugby career. In the summer Farrell enjoys surf lifesaving. There was a Hurricanes School Sevens tournament in Palmerston North yesterday.
Not only did Hastings BHS successfully defend their title; look who was playing for them. Kini Naholo. The brother of ... . This is not the first I've seen of him; watched him play one of the 1stXV games earlier this year as well. He's very strong & fast. What a talent. Don't know how old he is, but I hope the HBRU can keep him in the Bay.

Hastings BHS are the only school from the Bay competing at the Condor 7s this weekend.
Draw Saturday 3/12:
9.50am v Rangitoto College (Field 3)
12.10pm v Palmerston North HS (Field 1)
2.25pm v Tauranga Boys College (Field 1)I suspect only the games on Field 1 will be televised on the Rugby Channel.

Very dominant performance from Hastings Boys thus far.
They won their first game v Rangitoto College 29 to 5.
In their second game (televised) v Palmerston North, they were impressive on both attack and defence. Naholo jr and Fakatava are incredibly powerful and McClutchie looks the goods. The other players were good, too. Saw some great turnovers. Geez, I hope they can keep all these boys in the Bay!Hastings BHS 33 - 0 Palmerston North BHS
McClutchie 2, Naholo 2, Lolofie tries; McClutchie 4 conPS: it's still a mystery to me why none of the HBHS boys didn't make the NZ Schools team. Hope that will happen in 2017.

Seriously terrible officiating has potentially cost Hastings the game and the tournament.
With 12-17 on the score board, Hastings were heading towards the Tauranga try line. The Hastings player got tackled, released the ball, wasn't held, picked up the ball again .... and was penalised for not releasing the ball. Totally wrong. As it was full time by then, they lost the game. They should have been allowed to play on and would have had a very good chance of scoring.The ref penalised Hastings several times for things that didn't deserve a penalty, and did so inconsistently. For example, a Hastings player was penalised for a high tackle that wasn't one. Exactly the same type of tackle by Tauranga wasn't penalised. A ball that hit a Hastings player's knee was ruled to be a knock-on. Etc etc.
Sad that a shocker by the ref (no idea who he was), may cost Hastings a spot in the finals on day 2.
