It must be hard for St Johns these days. Back in my day they'd get all the good Catholic rugby players and were competitive with Hastings/Napier etc.

Now, any one who is good is going to Hastings, or Lindersfarne if they have money or scholarship, or Napier if they get boarding for free.

I wonder how much of a powerhouse Hastings would have been over the years if Hastings only had the one boys school like Napier? ;)

Haha I may or may not have been at Lindisfarne and may or may not have been on scholarship! Unfortunately not for my rugby abilities although had 3 years in the 1st 15 in which we got pumped by all my Napier mates growing up and then pumped by lots of my now Hastings boys mates. Even St Johns had a couple of good years think in 01 or 02 they took down HBHS I remember them going to a Marae the night before big team thing whole school turned out and was a massive upset. Funny thing was I physio'd for NBHS on my final year of study like 09 I think. I thought they were nothing compared to NBHS/HBHS of 02-04 funny thing is they went to top 4 at nationals that year and were a tiny team that played amazing footy. Also helps with a 8/9/10 of Gareth Evan-Brad Weber-Ihaia West. They also had a 5th former tall centre who I thought was the best in the side but have never heard of him again. Unfortunately can't remember his name.

Hastings Boys v Hamilton Boys called off due to the extreme weather - so looks like they'll just play the final next week now.

Hastings BHS are the 2016 Super 8 Champions! They beat Hamilton boys 30-8 in the final. A very convincing win and unbeaten all season. I hope they can go all the way and become National Champions this year!

Always good to see HB schools doing well and winning.

There looks a fair bit of talent there and hopefully the HBRU will be in first to sign players to their Academy.

If I understand it correctly, there will now be semi-finals for the Hurricanes title on 20 August between Hastings BHS and St Pat's Town and between Napier BHS and Wellington College.

Not such good news for NBHS supporters as they got rolled 39 - 31 by Wellington College in Wellington this afternoon. Napier did have three of their best players out and it showed in the first half where things did not go well to put it mildly. Plenty of missed tackles, poor passes and less than desirable kicks. Despite that a couple of opportunist tries were scored, think centre Mitchell Drew got them both. The second half saw a marked improvement as the forwards started going forward, lineouts started to be won, scrums were not being dominated, passes stuck and more importantly tackles were being made.

With about ten minutes to go the scoreline stood at Wgtn Coll 27 - 24 NBHS but Wgtn got two quick tries before Napier struck back with a nice converted to to get withing eight points with a time virtually up and that was that.

On a brighter side for Nepia and Gibbit I did hear a progress score of forty odd to bugger all in favour of Hastings BHS in their encounter against Saint Patricks College Kilbirnie. Not sure at what stage of the game that was.

Not a bad result for Napier BHS, considering they've not had the best of seasons and were missing important players like the Tremain lad.

Hastings BHS beat St Pats Town 47-3. They've been so impressive this season; I can't see Wellington College be the first to beat them next week.

Yes, I listened to the radio commentary of the game and they were incredibly dominant all game. I really hope the Top 4 semis and final are televised. Should make for much better viewing than the Magpies games, which are depressing.

Been chatting with a few friends and family back home about the loss in the final. Apparently Hastings were missing their captain, their number 1 halfback and their number 1 lock.

Even so, it's a real bummer to get so close and just miss out by a point.

Still what an awesome season for Hastings. 2nd best team in the country and smashed the daylights out of the Super 8 and Hurricanes comps.

Hope they can carry on next year and put in some more decent performances.

@Hooroo Not sure, I'll have to ask, but I think there were a decent number that weren't 7th form.

I saw on tv that Chris Boyd was at the semi-finals on Friday. I wonder whether any of the Hastings Boys will be ending up with a development contract. In that case, they might not return next year?
