Nah, like Rotated mentioned earlier, he normally takes an over or two to assess the pitch and the swing before going berserk. He definitely didn't do this in the final against the best bowler in the world who was making the ball talk.
You need to re watch the WC

Even if you are right, surely you have to criticise his inability to adapt to conditions. I'm sorry, but we seem to be affording this guy more leeway that any one else. Using your argument, nobody should criticise Fekitoa for rushing up on defence since this is how he plays. Let's just not be critical at all from now on.

I didn't see anything different to what had been a pretty successful approach throughout the World Cup for McCullum. Yes he came up against some pretty good bowling and whilst I would've loved for him to be out there longer, he obviously thought it was the right ball to hit and he got out. I would've been disappointed to see him not attack given what he had done throughout the tourney. If you look at his batting and how he approached the first few balls throughout,
1st match vs SL - first two balls he faced he attacks Kulaseraka and Slinga and knocks them for four. This has impacted the SL bowlers and by over two Slinga is already bowling slower balls. Fourth ball, boundary.
2nd match vs Eng - well who can forget how he attacked Broad from ball one. Baz hits 18 off Broad's first over.
3rd match vs OZ - charges Starc on his first delivery and Starc bowls a wide. Next ball tonk, six. Later in the same over, he smashes a full one down the ground for 4.
4th match vs Afghans - first ball down the track and 4. Second ball down the ground 4.
5th match vs Bangles - first ball goes hard and edges past slips and down to third man for 2. Third ball gets on to it early and it goes over midwicket for 4.
QF match vs Windies - first ball and he plays on the back foot and gets a single. Fourth and fifth ball he whips for 4 and then attacks a bouncer and knocks Holder for 6.
SF match vs Saffas - first ball Steyn beats the bat. Second ball Steyn is short and McCullum is all over for 6. Fourth ball, McCullum charges forces Philander to dig in extra short which McCullum tries to hook anyway but doesn't connect and results in 4 byes. Fifth ball and McCullum stays put but Philander is short and McCullum hits him for 6.
Watching highlights on youtube and re-reading some of the stuff on cricinfo and match reports, he certainly made that WC exciting, well for me at least.
