I'm sure part of this is to appease the TV broadcasters and sponsors.

Ah yes, yet another absolute bullshit headline.
The headline's so-called "ghost race" - is that the other boat has to cross the start line. That's it.
It's not even to the extent of 2013, when, according to the article (and why would anybody do that) - they actually had to sail the course.

all of it blown out of proportion, the reality is the teams will probably be out training anyway so even if they did have to finish the race...they'd probably want too

Yeah - I was thinking that too... If they have to get out to do the start, I suspect they'll want to just blat it up and down the actual course a couple of times at least... it's probably worth more than getting an extra couple of hours in the shed to tinker.
And even if Sunday afternoon's race is a dead-rubber, I'd expect the good-will (and again, experience) from actually racing - again, more worthwhile than the extra couple of hours - when they've got a whole week to repaint shit, and polish the shiny bits, and whatever else.

Good race, 9 lead changes, Brits won and are off to the final. Italy are in the semi with USA, if they manage to make it

Probably the most exciting race so far and you would have to say that Ainslie outsailed Spithill.

Will Team UK race tomorrow? We'll see.

After the initial struggles, INEOS have made a lazarus style recovery

I don't thin you'd find people like coutts and spitall doing something like that...but then I don't think they would have offered help (off the water, think all sailors would have helped at the time) like these teams did

Very much the "on the water" distinction. Artemis had a sailor killed in San Fran so it isn't a joke when one of these rocket ships goes tits up.

Getting a team back on it's feet off the water is novel and very cool.
Maybe the days of Connor, Coutts, Butterworth, Berterelli, Ellison et al are gone. Let's hope so. The lawyers will be spewing though.

Kind of was the making of Paul Holmes too.

@mariner4life Nah. Fuck that, it went on for too long. I have sailed for most of my life and I want to see deign, development, and boats on the water deciding the outcome, not lawyers.

    Agreed that they are fluffybunnies.

I don't mind a bit of back and forth in the lead up, builds some tension, concentrate on the racing once it all starts though

Because Connor is a fluffybunny and Fay not much better.
However the deed of gift did stipulate a "match race" so define that how you will. It isn't an easy document.
Fay challenged in a "J" (from memory) class monohull. Connor showed up with a catamaran. Not a "match" which is why we now have the proper measures for the boats. All the same as motor sport now, in terms of weights, specs, etc. The AC 75 specs are pretty specific but leave room for teams to innovate. All good as I see it.
