Well done that man
Also Graeme Dingle, I'm sure there are other Ferners that visited OPC
Went on two trips to OPC when at school. Still remember them well and for a kid from South Auckland they gave me personal experience of things I used to dream about reading About Sir Ed. A well deserved gong.

@jegga did they still have that giant rope swing in the bush when you went? That was so cool. Like bunny jumping before bunny jumping was a thing. Free fall then swung up into the canopy with a massive adrenalin rush.
I heard they had to change it for H&S reasons.
Was so sad when they had that tragedy with the flash flood not just for the lives lost but the shit they got from it. -
@Crucial I can't remember the swing, do remember as part of the tramp we did some caving too and there was a trip up Tongariro (I think) too on the best day for weather we got.
Someone stuffed up badly for all those people to die so hopefully all the shit they got made them sort out their systems better.Talking of bungy jumping I see A J Hackett got a gong too.

I followed that case quite closely and it was a major stuff up by anyone it was a combination of little things and decisions that added together lucked out badly. It was easy for people to point the finger and say 'should have done better' but this is obviously an outdoor environment and while risk assessment is done there is also a residual risk that is much higher than normal everyday life. It is that boundary pushing that makes adventure adventurous.
The was no slackness but I think that have probably now added a few extra safety things in like sat phone support in case the unexpected happens and more experienced support is needed.
