    I have a 2deg sim when Iโ€™m over home.

No matter what the data allowance is going to be shit so hopefully youโ€™re staying somewhere with wifi.

We use Nomad eSIM nowadays (data only) when we travel.

It's great and I assume works in NZ.

On a related note: best EV charging app for NZ? Going to hire an EV while I'm there as it seems to be better value than ICEV.

Yes, chargenet but there are heaps of chargers at BP, Z stations etc and they aren't on their network.

I've got a Polestar (no that isn't a stripper) and just tell Google find a charger for me because it is basically a google car. There is also Plugshare, which seems to have most of them. If you are doing longer trips there is ABRP (a better route planner) that will schedule stops and give you a route to take, but I haven't actually used it).

Thanks gents. I'll probably get an Ioniq 5 at this stage, and won't be going too far off the beaten track.

I'll go with Google in that case ๐Ÿ™‚

The original or 2.0 release? How do you find the efficiency?

@NTA Polestar 2 - Dec 2022 model, whatever that is. I really like it, still getting 400km out of it, goes like stink. Quiet, comfortable, AWD. Was concerned about build quality then I read one review that said - forget every preconception you have about it being assembled in China, it's a Euro car. That seems to be true. I wanted something similar to my RS4 in terms of build, performance, comfort, and I got it. Obviously never going to handle like the Audi and you lose the whole driving experience of 6 speed manual with 3 pedals, compared to effectively one, but in traffic that is a real plus. It surprisingly only weighs 230kg more, just swapped out a V8 for a battery.

@Snowy the "version 2.0" facelift has the flat coloured panel on the front instead of a black "grill". Apparently the new one is slightly more efficient as well and was RWD by default.

Yours would be the original as a '22 model. I like the look of them actually but felt that it wasn't quite the family car I was after.

@NTA Yep that's the one. Pah, RWD. I made the mistake of a 2wd EV previously. A sloping metal driveway in a super torquey EV that weighs 1.9 tonne is a fuck up.

Very wise. Would be absolutely hopeless. There is no room in the back for passengers (esp over 4ft tall) and one of the reasons I bought it. I used to carry 400 whingers around in the back of planes, now I can't even abide one in the back of a car.

I thought you'd returned to commercial piloting?

I have. I took a job that didnโ€™t have whingers wanting better booze and snacks.

    Hikotron chargers at 7kW suck.

Asking for a $20 account credit up front sucks more

The WE.ev charger at Hamilton council was good at 49kW and I'd not have wasted my time with Hikotron this arvo if I'd known that. Having the option to just charge without an account is important. Tap n go would be better across the board.

Also: renting an EV presented challenges I wasn't expecting like needing to bring it back at 75% - I ran out of time thanks to shit chargers and road works on SH1.

I get that Hikotron's business model is to install home chargers but if you're going to supply 22kW chargers to home owners, have a few around the Waikato for public use

@nostrildamus it was pretty cool but the advantage of a few days with it made me appreciate some of the shortcomings:

    Very hard ride.
Couldn't get android auto to work for some reason.
No "real" buttons for climate control.
A little slow to react to some instructions eg unlocking doors.

Plenty of space. Good range. Some nice tech.

Would consider but it's a bit big for what I need tbh.

Did give a bit of a hurry up to some racer Boi types late Saturday night in the tron tho ๐Ÿ˜‰

I can live with it if the price is right.

    Unlike the Volvo Xc30...
