Just quit smoking today and so far so good.

Bacon Bagle for Breakfast probably wasn't the best start, but after a weekend on the gas I felt it was justifiable.

Boozing will now be restricted to one day a weekend.

Gym went well. 40 minutes intense cardio.

A pear and banana added to my lunch.

I have just purchased 'Jamie's Italy' and will be cooking a dish from that tonight that consistsof a bottle of Chianti, but that will probably be the only fattening part of the dinner!

NO JUNKFOOD and NO CIGS today!

forgive me FOR I AM WEAK!!!!!

I have still managed to avoid the Cigs but the staff restaurant wooed me this morning and I couldn't pass up 2 bacon sandwiches.

and how fattening is gnocchi? I cooked that with an italian dish I prepared last night. It seems awfully heavy

Depends what type of gnocchi - the spinach ones should be OK, but the cheese ones can be a little fatty. The pasta is good for you provided you burn it off thereafter.

Nothing wrong with bacon sandwiches provided they've cut and drained the fat off them. You'll find during the first few weeks of giving up smoking that you'll crave something to do with your hands - hence food. Make sure you don't have a fridge or drink/food machine at your place of work.

you're not going to lose any weight by eating carbs after 4 o'clock unless you do some exercise before you go to bed!

GODDAMMIT!!! I have put on 3.5 kgs in 10 days. I wasn't taken my excerise seriously enough!!!
I'm now walking 1hr and 12 mins a day to and from work. Gyming during Lunch and cricket practise on Tuesdays and Saturday!!!

Changing my diet will be more gradual than instant.

Smoked on the weekend but haven't had one without a beer, which I suppose is something

Do you play squash? Could give you a game after work a few times a week if you want.

I wish I did. There are only two sports I really hate. Squash and Badminton.
Would have been ideal though with us working so close.

How good are you?? If you're really good it would be pointless for you and I would end up throwing my racket at you in frustration as you played me around the court. If you're only ok, I could be up for a game!

I'm very average. I rely on fitness and speed to make up for poor shot selection.

As I'm current unfit and slow, and you have a significant reach advantage, you should be fine. It's mainly a good way to run around for 40mins without realising you are running around for 40mins - beats mindless treadmilling anyway.

I have bad news for you Hooroo.

Whilst giving up the cigs will improve your fitness, as you will be able to breathe better, but your eating and drinking habits will change.

I gave up fags 18 months ago. Feel miles better, but have put on a shed load of weigth, notwithstanding exercise etc.

Not sure if the old metabolism is slowing down as a result as well.

You always gain weight when you stop smoking, I think there's something in cigs that artificially keep your weight down a couple of kilos. Once you give up the smoke you put on 2 or 3 kgs.

I wouldn't go on a diet and quit smoking at the same time, too much of a shock for the ol' body methinks.

Putting on weight after smoking is as simple as one thing: You eat more. The habitual mode of cigarettes isn't just in the ingestion of various chemicals and the body's reaction to them - its the physical act of something to do. When you give up you need to fill your hands with something every 20 minutes and food seems to be the most common item, simply because its the most common to obtain. The chemical side is that its a stimulant like caffeine and keeps you going.

I gave up when at Uni and having only been a smoker for a couple of years, was fine... well that and I couldn't afford to eat. My Dad gave up while working his arse off on the farm and still managed to eat his way to another two stone. Have to say the old man would have made a great prop - 6 feet tall, about 110kg fully fit, 14 hours a day on the farm and mentally as tough as old horseshoes. Good pace for a nugget too. Shame his youth was misspent on aussie rules, but he can kick the leather off it...
