I’ve recently been going hard on Roero red wines, in a search for more value Nebbiolo wines. It’s amazing - I’m paying between 20-30 bucks for similar value quality from 40-50 dollar Barbarescos. Highly recommend trying it if you can find it.
I’ve also been trying out some Nerello Mascalese wines (Sicily) as these are starting to be released here as single vintages (often blended in many wines). It’s been pretty dependent on producer, but if you like big reds, it’s a fun addition to the rotation.
I also recently had an amazing orange wine from la Baronne (Languedoc) called La Grenache Gris de Jean - amazing with any kind of pork/fruit (apple, apricot) match. I’m not sure if you can get it in NZ though.

Excellent thanks whoever did that. I'll spend some time on this forum backlog at some point.
In the interim, damn it's good to be back in NZ from Bali - for those who haven't been, wine is 3x the price because of Gov tax. A bottle of Cloudy Bay sav is $120 in the bottlo, and that's only in the rare places you can find it.
Imagine my pig-in-muddery to be able to order such things from Countdown only for $38!
I don't have anything new to add to the forum yet, just bought the staple classics this week (Amisfield, Rockburn, Church Rd etc), but I'm keen to hear all your recommendation at all price points.
Quarantine gives me plenty of opportunity to try new stuff, provided it can be delivered!

On Wednesday night I was in Auckland so I visited a friend rather than go out to a restaurant. For scientific research purposes we drank a bottle each of NV Mumm, Veuve Cliquot and Laurent Perrier. The conclusion was we didn’t like the chardonnayed LP as much as the pinot noired Mumm, that the widow’s water was very pleasant, that the last bottle was the one that got her pissed, and that next time we probably only need two.
Thursday was a mixed bag.

I don't drink wine often but if I do it's usually sauvignon blanc- chilean as nice and easy. Something like this, any recommendations for a change?

You might like a nice dry riesling? Not too sweet, NZ examples from Martinborough and central otago are good. Pinot gris is quite inoffensive

After starting with a couple of Church Rd chardys, it's an Isobel Pinot Noir tonight for me, courtesy of Countdown.
Was thinking how ironic it is that NZ makes such wonderful Pinot, when I really feel like a big-ass shiraz in this 15 degree weather. But back in Oz, where its always 30 degrees, they're the masters of the big bold shiraz, when all you feel like is something lighter.

You could try a French Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire. Ideally a Sancerre or Pouilly Fume (which are a bit more expensive). Similar to your Chilean, but much more refined.

I enjoy french chenin blanc too
They tend to use Chenin Blanc further along to the west in the Loire with Sav Blanc being the king in the east. I actually struggle with CB pretty much from wherever - it's quite big in South Africa for example. Funnily enough though, I bought a half case of half bottles of a French sweet Chenin Blanc and that was fucking delicious with the right pudding.
