Do those lunges in our warmup. Doesn't take long for the burn to kick in.

My scales were broken this morning (at least I hope they were, they were telling me I'd gained 30kg overnight then giving me error messages!) Hopefully it's just the batteries.

My lifting programming has been a bit haphazard lately; up until a month ago I had been doing a strict 3x5 with linear progression. I’ve stalled out 3 times on most lifts now and for the past few weeks have just been playing around with lower rep/higher weight stuff.

I'm going on holiday on 22nd September for a week and once I come back I'm going to start Jim Wendler's 5/3/1, which hopefully will give me a bit more structure while allowing me to prepare for my BJJ tourney a month later. This means that over the next couple of weeks I’m going to attempt to set new 1-rep maxes for all the big lifts, starting tonight with the overhead press.

Jiu jitsu-wise, tonight’s goals are to work on armbars from guard, standing guard passes and cross-collar chokes from mount (the latter suck to be on the receiving end of, I’m feeling a bit sorry for my training partners).

531 is good mate - you should enjoy that and get alot out of it.

I did it early this year and will probably do it again for 4 months or so next year.

Had to work late last night, didn't make it to the gym or BJJ. Life would be so much easier if I were paid for my athletic endeavours.

Ain't that the truth. It's that very painful fact that prohibits me from being allowed to buy supplements by the wife....

Mrs MN5: We don't have money for that shit, not like you're a bodybuilder or powerlifter or getting money for it....

MN5: Yeah but I like getting stronger !

Mrs MN5: Why ?

MN5: ( shuffles feet and looks down, confused )

Haha I get the same grief from the wife. She was having a go at me for having 4 different proteins on the go the other day:

Mrs JK - why do you need all that stuff? Do you think you're a body builder or something?

JK - Or something....(also whilst walking away)

Been a few days since I updated this. I had a crappy week last week, worked late a lot and only made it to BJJ once (on Thursday) and didn't lift at all.

I went surfing over the weekend though and barring some twist of fate I'll be squatting, benching and jiu jitsu-ing tonight. I expect to be sore tomorrow.

Jiu Jitsu goals for tonight remain: armbars from guard, standing guard passes and cross-collar chokes from mount.

    Tuesday 18/09/12

Bench
1x 90, 95, 100, 105kg (new 1 rep max. Very happy with this, as I was aiming for 100kg. But that flew up, so I thought I'd go for 105.)

Squat
3x3 107.5kg
1x 115kg (this isn't a true max as I definitely have more in me. I didn't want to push the squats too much today though, as I had already set one PR, haven't squatted in a couple of weeks and still had BJJ to come).

Chins
4x5 bodyweight

1.5hours BJJ

Got all my goals and did pretty well rolling with some guys who usually smash me.

All in all, a great day!

Weight this morning: 86.8kg without a gi, 88.7kg with gi.

Only 0.4kg to go! <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/rugby/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/good.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':good1:' /> In truth, I want to undershoot it by about a kilogram or so, to make sure I can have a nice breakfast etc on the day and not worry about being over by 0.1kg or something stupid. Plenty of time to lose ~1.5kg though.

Deadlifts, Overhead Press and BJJ tonight. Goals for BJJ are triangles from guard (I suck at these), flower sweeps, standing guard passes and arm-triangles from the top.

    Thursday 20/09/12

Press
1x60, 65kg
0x70kg
3x3 60kg

This brought me back down to earth. I had estimated I was capable of putting 75kg overhead but I couldn't even get 70. Seems that I'm weak at the bottom of the movement.

Deadlifts
3x3 150kg

1.5hours BJJ

Rolled with some higher belts, good learning experience though it does nothing for my ego.

I'm back from a holiday in Turkey. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I kept up neither my diet nor exercise while there. Instead, I drank beer, snacked on ice creams and lazed by the pool.

Bodyweight this morning was 87.6kg, so I've put on 2kg. A bit shameful, but hopefully nothing I can't lose again before the 20th.

Today is squats, bench press and BJJ. Goals for BJJ are guillotine and triangle chokes, from any position I can hit 'em!

    Tuesday 02/10/12

Squat
3x3 107.5kg

Bench
3 x 92.5kg
3, 3 x 90kg (all done with a pause at the bottom, powerlifting style. Much harder like this!)

Chins
3x5

1.5h BJJ

Worked on a side control escape and a back take/sweep from half guard. Felt a bit rusty rolling, it's amazing how even a small time off dulls your technique.

Less than a week to go before the tournament and I'm nervous and excited in turns. We have 3 blackbelts visiting from Brazil all this week, so I'll be training as much as physically possible. We had an excellent session yesterday, I rolled with a female blackbelt who can't have been more than 50kg but she was absolutely toying with me. It really drives home how effective this martial art is.

On my way to the tournament now. I've had a great week of training and my weight this morning with a gi is 86.4kg so I have a couple of kilos to play with.

My first match is at 5pm, I'll let you guys know how it goes (hopefully with videos).

Right, I've been pretty poor at letting you all know what happened, so I'm sorry about that. I was waiting until I had videos of my matches, but it doesn't look like they'll be up for a while so I'll give a brief description.

I made it into the second round of the tournament, winning my first match by arm-triangle. It went pretty much to plan; I wanted to be in top position, looking to pass rather than playing guard. I was most worried about getting there, though, as takedowns aren't my strongest area. Luckily though, my opponent pulled guard. He threw up a rather sloppy armbar attempt, which allowed me to pass into side control, then get mount, then get the choke.

In my second match, I was doing pretty well for the first half of the match but about halfway through we went out of bounds and re-started on our feet in the middle. From there, I got taken down and spent a long time in quarter-guard, trying not to get mounted. Right at the end of the match, he managed to take my back for 4 points and the win. I was pretty disappointed with my performance in this match, but it's good experience and all in all I had a great time.
