Ultimate NPC: Round 1 Waikato v Manawatu
-
A dry game in the Tron. Battle of the cockies
Cowbells are ringing and really annoying Mark Shaw.
Waikato look to have the edge in the loosies but if the two Aarons get front foot ball they could create havoc with Cully chiming in. -

Cullen to score 3 and win it by himself on a chilli saturday arvo at Rugby Park

Very tempting to vote for the 'Poo as they look to be strong and powerful enough up front to win that important battle, but can I find it in my heart to actually vote for them?
-
There haven't been many quicker halfbacks than Duggan. He regularly outplayed Meg in the late 1990s.
-
@Crucial Don't agree about the loosies and Waikato will be hoping there aren't too many scrums. Good as there front row is Knight and Lambert are formidable props. the Poos weakness is the lineout but I reckon it's a much tighter contest than may expected with an exciting Poo backline
-
Poo are going to suffer because most voters won't know how good the 5 old names in that pack are.

Not many, but Nugget?
-
I'd take Duggan in a race. He played sevens for NZ for a reason.

I thought you meant quicker getting the ball out.
-
@Crucial I don't think any halfback has/had a pass as quick as Smith. Maybe Tonu'u, but he could be erratic.
-
@Bovidae Grim Bachop?
-
Manawatu have a class backline, so Waikato would have to get on top in the forwards.

I'd still rate Smith ahead of Bachop. Laidlaw had a great pass in his day too.
-
Some serious wheels in that Waikato backline
-
Sivivatu scored 5 tries against Auckland in a game. I'm sure he could manage a hat-trick against the Poo.

But they have Fozzie at 10
-
@Crucial Even worse, they are burdened with Reece Duggan!
-
I'm hoping this Ian Foster turns up.
-
Far and away the tightest one for me to pick.
-
@dogmeat Manawatu get close to parity in the forwards, and have much better halves.

I reckon they are stronger from 1-10 and then at 15.
-
@Tim I went for the Poo I just thought it would be a closer contest than the others
-
@dogmeat I thought it was easier than a couple others.
-
@taniwharugby yeah well you did pick the Taniwha.....
-
@dogmeat mate, heart ALWAYS pick the the Taniwha!
-
@taniwharugby I have enjoyed a few good nights at Okara Park. Yet to see the home team win though.
It's the most bogan ground I have ever been to - in a good way. Only place I've ever been to where in his after match presentation the President of NRU told the punters what roads to take to avoid the booze bus
-
@dogmeat guessing you havent been here for some time...?
It's not about the winning (says someone who's team experiences losing more than winning) its about supporting your team and being able to enjoy the rare wins when they happen!

Singing to the choir mate
Harbour
Warriors
Black Caps
FulhamThere have been years when they've barely mustered a win between them.
I would hate to support someone like Canterbury or Man U and not truly appreciate a Ranfurly Shield victory or Europa League Final. Actually just - I would hate to support someone like Canterbury or Man U works fine.

I was going to say that you left out Tasman but then they've never experienced a Shield win so I wouldn't know if they'd appreciate it or not
-
I had to give a presentation at a management conference the Monday after Harbour's shield win. To a room heavily sprinklered with rabid Canterbury supporters. My Powerpoint was titled Leadership with Courage, clicked on the title and it played the last 10 minutes of the challenge - twice.
-
@Tim I reckon Manawatu might have the better pack - at least in terms of the "greatness" pantheon.
Waikato only has Loe and (for a short time) Messam as regular first choice ABs.
Manawatu has Knight, Lambert, Shaw and Eveleigh.
