Since my first poll thread went pretty well aside from the not having nominations first hiccup so I thought I'd do a Best Magpies Import Poll.

But, some rules. So it's not a two way fight between Ash and BBBR (with maybe a little Horrell) we'll restrict it to mid career imports to fill (supposed) gaps in the team. Ash and BBBR came here out of school and Horrell just wandered up. Not sure if Lamborn should be allowed as he seems more Horrell than Ili/May etc but I'll leave it up to @Stargazer to nominate him and Coman.

I'll start things off with Ili:

Stacey Ili: Has been great for the Magpies this year and was decent last year too. Incisive runner and good enough to feed the wings. His dad @Canes4life is a poster here.

Kahn Fotuali: Seems weird when we have Fakatava carving up, Weber away with the ABs, and McLeod proving an admirable back up that we needed to import a decent number 9, but by god we needed to, and he was bloody good for us. My BoP mate (???) shouted Magpies for Life to him in Hamilton at the end of the Samoa v Japan match in 2011 and he cheered back and waved to us in the crowd. No one shouted Ta$man for life at him @Chris-B.

Gillies Kaka: I assume he turned up here due to his cuzzy Guildford and put in some decent performances. Better at 7s but still a good 15s player for the Magpies.

Jason Shoemark: Played some of his best rugby for the Magpies, after a superstar age group career out of Northland, which saw him get a decent run in the Highlanders.

Now, my brain has officially stopped (it's only just dropped below 40 in Sydney) as I think there's lots more I can't think of (we've definitely had a lot of import props I think). So I'll leave it open for nominations.

I was more meaning recent past - since the NPC restructure, mid 2000s, but he's a great call so I'll allow it!

Danny Lee would almost fit the bill as well but he might be more for your next poll best local imported back. Him and Zac and Gareth and Weber, Matty B etc

Sona was just a rock up from working the forestries from memory more than an import.

I genuinely can't remember but was N Mauger terrible for us or were we just terrible when he was there.

I’d have Thomas The Tank Engine rather than Coman, but probably neither. For loose forward import I’d pick O’Connor.

    Lock import, Mark Abott?

Nah, those guys are all local so they don't count, has to be a straight up import - Lee played for the Magpies (and the 'spit' Vikings) before moving away.

Is Neria Fomai an import? I have the impression that about his whole family lives in the Bay, so I'm not sure. (Is Tivaini Fomai - a Magpie in 2012 - his brother?)

I guess our best hooker import would be Ash Dixon (from Auckland several times as I remember)

Edit I am an idiot, he played for us first

Geoff Cridge didn't play 1st XV in Hawke's Bay but played for the HBU18s, so arrived here directly after school. Not an import according to @Nepia 's definition ?

Still an import as he came through the Canterbury System and in true Ken Laban style attended St Bedes College. Some pretty decent players in the 2006 NZ Schools team that he played for

    NZS 2006

    NZS 2006

SQUAD L.G. Braid (Tauranga BC) M.B. Cameron (Hamilton BHS) A.J. Cathcart (Hamilton BHS) H.M. Cochrane (Marlborough BC) R.S. Crotty (Shirley BHS) I.I.A. Dagg (Lindisfarne College) A.L....

@Higgins I'm sure Ash Dixon went to CBHS. I remember him being interviewed on TV as the captain of their 1st XV.

@Bovidae I stand corrected. Obviously Ken Laban had nothing to do with the post of the 2006 NZ Schools Team listed on the College Sport Media Website. It is enormous relief to learn that the former Captain of Napier Tech Old Boys is not an old boy of a doolie outfit.
