i think there has been a couple of threads that have touched on similar topics and im not really sure the best one so i'll stick this in here and move if needs be
so, i decided during lockdown last year i was going to get back into playing rugby, wife was working long hours and quite honestly i just got a bit lonely at night
found a club not too far away here in melbourne and preseason started training started late Jan.
jeez, a real wake up call, apparently jogging just doesn;t cut it on the fitness scales, having a proper conditioning coach is helping and can at least finish a session without having to take a break to "stretch"
some real trouble with knees/achilles/calf's as have had issues with them in the past. slowly coming right though through proper training
can i also just add the back of the lineout seem a lot further away that i remember from the last time i played!
preseason games started this week, if anyone wants to feel a but queasy i can provide photos of my back from the first game, black/blue and red
in general i feel good though, great to meet loads of new blokes ranging from the 20 years olds trying to go pro to some older hats waiting for the squads to sperate so the 3rds can spend at least one training run at the pub
and interesting development is the wife, started making comments about missing me being out 2-3 nights a weeks and Saturday games still on the horizon
will settle down i think as i have no expectations above the 3rds and so should get a night back a week
just interesting how things change a bit
Womble, that's awesome!
And just because it's the Fern, and it's human nature to at least try and match your story ... I'll share mine
How old are you Womble? And how long since you played? Where? When? Who? How?
I suspect I have a similar story, in that I chucked footy on the back of a back injury and general disinterest at about 28.
But took it up again at about 34 in Adelaide.
Had an agreement with Mrs Boo that I'd only trsin once a week which restricted me to 3rds and 4ths, which was OK. I was a star in 3rds, and enjoyed playing 4ths as they were the good players who didn't bother training at all
Kept that going when I relocated up here to Hervey Bay.
As very few peeps were prepared to play in the front row I kept a place in firsts pretty much as long as I wanted.
Eventually chucked it for good due to working away at about age 42, but still played the odd game till 43 ... oh, you're short? I've got my boots in the car ...
Now 52 with heart issues I'm still waiting for Fozzie to give me that call ...
Awesome way to meet and get to know people.
As for throwing ... I was always crap ... did a bit of hookering in my day ... but seriously I was a crap thrower ... but the routine I worked out was that the height of the crossbar was roughly where you'd ex9ect a jumper to get to. So I'd pace off the distance the jumpers would be along the try line from the post from the different sort of jumps (hard flat, front lob, back lob etc) and then try and hit where the cross bar met the post.
Was still a crap thrower ...

I've been only a fill-in the last few years as I continued my quest to bring the club back from the brink of collapse. Now that I've avoided (or at least, delayed) that, this year I'm BACK, BABY!
Have 92 caps for the club, and would have been well over 100 if I'd not taken a hiatus back in 2012-2014. Will probably end up playing hooker and the moulded studs will get me thru to the ton. At that point I might shift my attention more to refereeing and helping address bigger issues in the game.
Have been pushing myself at training 1.5 sessions a week (have to leave early on Wednesdays) but really enjoying it.
Like you, the social aspect I think I need despite very much enjoying the WFH situation with COVID. And this year I'll enjoy a few beers after the game a bit more than I was.
I'll be 45 in June and I reckon that's around the time I start to think about retiring - but there is a complete dickhead who racked up 123 caps through various dodgy means years ago, and I think I need to knock him out of 4th place on the club's all-time.

just turned 40 earlier in the year, have been the oldest during the pre season but ive noticed a few older blokes rocking up this week now we have games, another one tonight means i'll bloody miss the Landers v Chiefs live
Hadn't played proper XV's since Uni...so 2000 ish...just couldn;t commit to training and games plus uni and work...and then after uni i left dunners and without the inherent connection to a club i just never went back

A veritable youth!
I'm just there this year to throw lineouts, hook scrums, and cover rucks. All the other nonsense can be left to the big lads half my age who think they've invincible.

@nta yeah, have to say training with these guys in their 20's has been full on...but i really needed it
I've also developed a new respect for 20 year old me, i look back and think i was a bit of a fat kid that payed front row but i must have been fitter than i thought...just with the fat on top
also, the idea of a big night on the piss after working all day and then playing a game tonight....sounds exhausting!...might fake in injury in the last minute so i can at least sit down

@kiwiwomble I hadn't been down in a few years and pissed myself when I heard one of the more senior players saying he was managing his body, because he's older at 32.

@bones it has been pretty funny this week with some of these guys coming in with the big inspirational speeches....and im like where were you a month ago when we were running shuttles in 40 degrees
Not to sidetrack too much, but we did a warmup the other night called "I Can't Feel My Legs":
Stand on one tryline and do 50 squats then 20 lunges per leg.
Run to the other tryline.
Walk back.
That's 1 set. Do 3 sets in totalNow, the young guys all went red hot on that Monday, and Wednesday they could still barely walk. Myself and another mid-40s front rower eased our way into it, and stretched the next day. Kicked their arse Wednesday night

That's why you're so skinny. Imagine, if @NTA lived up your way, he would probably be 85kgs and playing #9....
