    I've had a 180

why am i arguing against more sports on TV? Fuck it, add another week and put all sorts of shit in. I watched freestyle BMX yesterday and it was fucking cool.

I guess my attitude was clouded by living in Australia, and the nationalistic dick-waving (strange term considering it was the chicks carrying the men) around medal counts based purely on the pool. All this "greatest olympian" bullshit based on medal tallies. medal tallies built because of the number of events they get to enter. And that's, once again, a failing of the media, not of the Olympics.

Swimming pads the stats for the Americans, the Aussies, and the Chinese. I get over that, i get over it all.

So yeah, Bigger! Swollen! More! that's my new motto

One thing I’m assuming the Aus press hasn’t mentioned is that at least 5 of those swimming golds would probably not have happened if Covid had not hit.

yeah, 12 months is a looooong time alright.

Still so impressive from those Aussie women. Great athletes.

Mens 1500 free was pretty cool. 3 guys in it right to the end. Watching them swim that fast for that long blows my mind.

That was an incredible finish. I’d be lucky to clock a 30sec 50m at all let alone do it for 40 odd laps.

The chicks were incredible. Feel sorry for Kyle Chalmers. Poor prick had to try and produce miracles every time. The medley team were very disappointing. Elijah Winnington also went badly to poo. He would have been a dead cert for gold on his qualification times but was a shadow of himself.

i just checked my Garmin. My fastest 1,500m from when i was swimming was 37 minutes!!!!! 2 and a half times slower!!

Actually, that is what i want in my Olympic coverage, augmented reality. Your Garmin stats are fed in to a program that then shows your performance overlayed on the event coverage. So it's 100m time? you go run a hundred, and then you can see yourself "competing" against the athletes.

Imagine how fucking incredible you would find watching the 10,000m if you saw how far you got spat out the back right from the start, and then how many times you got lapped?

In fact, i am off to find a development partner.

    I like three day eventing.

Sure it means the rider has a horse but that just adds to the level of difficulty trying to manage another animal that has a mind of its own and factor in fatigue etc across three very different disciplines. Plus male and female and all the rest of the alphabet can compete on equal terms. Brave bastards too.

However the specialist equestrian disciplines can go. Horses dancing backwards - yeah nah.

If you're talking ditching sports that are too similar beach volleyball has to go. Volleyball on the sand. Nice eye candy but a sport that dictates competitors clothing on purely perve grounds is just fucked.

Tennis, football, basketball, golf can all fuck off too.

Finally bring back tug of war!

Had a look at some lists of multiple medallists to see if this perception of too many swimming medals is real or not.

When you look at multiple golds for a single person in a single games over half of instances of 5 or more golds come in swimming. 7 out of 13 times. The top 4 gold hauls all from the pool.

If you go to 4 or more Golds in one games then it is Gymnastics that is the stand out.

If you then look at multiple medals of any colour there are 12 times that 7 or more medals have been won by one person in one games 5 of those are for swimming, 5 for gymnastics and 2 for shooting.

So Swimming and Gymnastics by far the biggest culprits of making multiple medals available for one strong competitor at one games.

In the 121 instances that one competitor has won more than one medal at one summer games - 43% Swimming, 40% Gymnastics.

I think that all pretty much supports the perception.

Genuinely this. It would be fascinating. Who would be the best? I'd tend to think the Eastern European nations may well do it, just send over behemoths of both genders. But I'd love to see it.

It's a very basic event, and the Olympics are at their best in the most basic events - running, weightlifting, swimming etc.

I’ve often wondered what motivates some of these European (cough white) runners. They train like demons and make huge sacrifices but must know that they’ll be left for dead in the heats by genetic freaks from the Caribbean.

late to this party but yeah, too many events

Agree, but they should add a few more.

i have to say im not a fan of any that require judging (subjective) and not a huge fan of those that require a tournament (uneven)

Yup, get rid of the judging sports, except womens 10m platform Diving and womens gymnastics. I can judge those perfectly fine.

I think they should all boil down to "strongest" "fastest" "highest" "longest" etc

Bring back horse racing. No handicap restrictions, no weight allowances, boys-against-girls, Open championships. 1200m sprint, 2000m route, 3200m marathon. Throw in a mile for the pacers and trotters, and a 440 yarder for the quarterhorses, 18 Gold medals total (six for the jockeys, six for their trainers, and oh yeah, six for the victorious horsies.).

What events can we add in to benefit NZ?

Biggest Bomb would be awesome. No style points and judging of manus just how high can you make that splash.

Woodchopping. Although would have to settle on one or two very different discplines to avoid the swimming/gymnastics argument. Maybe just standing chop and double saw?

In the winter Olys we could add in 3,000 metres ice walk in jandals. We'd have huge selection problems from Southland although the trials could be fun.

Team Australia: Jamie Kah, JMac and, um, dunno really. Pike for the last?

Horses would be harder. Especially at those distances.

Yeah that poor Aussie fucker barely stumbled over the line like a drunk. The winner took off like he could do it again. I’m not sure what would motivate you to want to absolutely destroy yourself to maybe finish a valiant 8th. Admirable and gutsy for sure but ultimately completely futile.
