Bruce Gemmell was in there a year or two before Lyn Davis so he might be either number 37 or 38

    Only 38 to go.

This player played both halfback and 1st 5

Ian Stevens???? Halfback for Wellington but I can remember him playing at first five for the All Blacks with his long hair on the 1972 tour to the home unions. Not sure if he played halfback though.

    Ian Stevens????

    Bingo.

Great write up on Stevens here

Started one test vs Oz at halfback and played 1st 5 in his other two.

Stevens as a halfback had good all round skills, a swift pass and an accurate boot and a breaking ability round the fringes of rucks and mauls which made him one of the Wellington representative side's most dangerous attacking weapons.

But at national level his rise to an All Black spot was blocked by any number of talented contemporaries. Chris Laidlaw, Sid Going and Lyn Davis were only slightly older and in their prime from the late 60s through to the mid 70s.

Later, too, Stevens faced considerable competition for All Black places from Lin Coiling and Bruce Gemmell.

Just looking at his games, during the 73 Europe tour on 3 February he started at halfback against France B, then 4 days later he started at 1st 5 against a French Selection team.

    Don’t know him 😀

But Jason was a great All Black from the 91 RWC. Amazing he only played one test and that was a start against Italy.

Fantastic 10 man rugby which became a massive problem once our pack lost dominance and we couldn't find a 1st 5

To be fair, often neither could Sid Going

Smith is not only the best 9 i've seen play for the ABs, he's the best 9 i have ever seen (and i thought Joost would take that mantle forever)

He's the complete player and the best AB 9 for me.

Rob Howley may be the best I've seen (Always world-class - even behind shit Welsh packs) but Nugget pushes him really close.
