Julian Savea has acquired Matt Dunning's backside.

Looks like he has discovered that pie shop that Andrew Mehrtens used to frequent. -

No one is writing Barret off in his bench impact role but he has constantly shown little direction or authority in the starting 10 jersey and setting the tone for the game. The Canes had the majority of possession and opportunities int he first 20 and took none. This isn't one game either he has struggled with it all his Super and AB career hence his AB appearances being mainly at fullback.

He will definitely be back for the All Blacks but in the same impact role behind Cruden or Sopoanga starting.

He did guide the Canes to a final last season.
-

I had a good time there. It isn't half as bad as the press it gets. Preferable to living somewhere like the suburbs in Sydney or Melbourne. Easy to get around and top facilities. Just a little soul-less.

Exactly, how can anyone evaluate Barrett's ab prospects based on the first game of the Super season. If we did that, most abs (especially GOAT) would have been written off.

I'm surprised that people are still surprised about 'X Player' being labelled as shit and no longer All Black quality one or two games into the Super 749 season.

Move on, nothing to see here. -

Actually I believe in Barrett's case it is different. He is a proven All Black as a bench impact player - he isn't proven as a starting 10 for the ABs.

The issue is his ability to play 10 at a world class level - this is different from talking about a proven performer in a certain position who is working into his season or going through the motions or perhaps an older body more suited to test rugby than Super Rugby (e.g. in previous years examples have been Nonu, Woodcock, McCaw etc etc). -

Perenara pisses me off. How can he be vice captain when he can't even clear the ball. Give Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi a chance. Perenara is too erratic and I can't really see him in the All Black frame if he carries on with that rubbish display of clearing the ball.

Nah he's been great as the Canes no. 10. He has his ups and downs, but so do most players. It would be logical to wait until at least mid season to evaluate his ab chances. One game is ridiculous. -

Agree with this. He has a real weakness with messy ball around the breakdown and his general passing isnt very good. He reminds me a bit of Brendon Leonard, who flashed on to the scene but then seemed to stall (Leonard also had a real weakness with managing/clearing messy rucks/breakdowns). -

Does anyone know where Geoff Cridge and Christian Lloyd are. They would both provide the required grunt we need in the tight five but they haven't even been mentioned in the media for some time. Are they out for the season?? If so considering they were both missing last year you would think the Canes would have signed two different locks for the season.

I was wondering about Cridge, too. After he had surgery last year, I read on the Magpies website that he was expected to be available from October. I don't know what has happened since then, but apparently he's still suffering from his knee(?) injury. Terrible signing for the Magpies and the Canes. He's never been on the field for the Canes, and for the Magpies he's played once as a sub in the last minutes of a game (I think against Northland in 2014) and managed to get a yellow in that short time. So maybe he's played 3 minutes or so for the Magpies. I assume he must have talent if he played for the NZU20s, but they can send him back to Christchurch if we don't get to see that on the field. I feel sorry for the player, though. Must be very frustrating to be injured for so long.
-

Christian Lloyd has been in the same boat for Wellington over the last two seasons. Seems to be always injured. Hopefully they can come back soon and give this Canes side the grunt they need.
