Hurricanes v Drua

Hurricanes
Xavier Numia, Asafo Aumua, Tyrel Lomax, Isaia Walker-Leawere, Justin Sangster, Blake Gibson, Du'Plessis Kirifi, Tyler Laubscher, TJ Perenara, Aidan Morgan, Salesi Rayasi, Billy Proctor, Bailyn Sullivan, Wes Goosen, Josh Moorby
Reserves: Dane Coles, Tevita Mafileo, Owen Franks/Pasi Tosi, Caleb Delany, TK Howden, Cam Roigard, Jackson Garden-Bachop, Riley Higgens
-
@Duluth Coles and potentially Owen Franks🙂
-
We have a first for a long time Canes fans, no Prinsep and Blackwell in the side. Amen to that.
Wow, Riley Higgins to debut before playing NPC. I’m not surprised though, he’s got a massive future. Kind of reminds me of a mix between Ryan Crotty and Conrad Smith.
Awesome seeing D Coles back, and can someone correct me if I’m wrong but hasn’t Aumua come back a week early?

From the decision (just like in other cases in which players were suspended for dangerous/high tackles or clean-outs involving head contact):"The Player was informed of his ability to apply for the Head Contact Process Coaching Intervention. Any player who has a citing or red card upheld by a disciplinary panel for foul play involving the Head Contact Process may apply to have the final week of their sanction substituted by undertaking a coaching intervention that specifically addresses the technical tackle/contact technique-error that caused or contributed to the foul play.
-
So despite the photo on SM a few days back, no Walden.
-
@Bovidae Riley Higgins has been carving up for Petone in club rugby so maybe they feel he’s worthy of a start already, a nod to the future maybe.
Do you know if Walden is injured?

Wouldn’t it be something if he scored a try off the bench
-
@Canes4life No idea about Walden. I liked what I saw of Higgins when I watched him live in the NZ Schools trials a few years back. Usually full squad members are favoured over WTG players.
-
What happened to Umunga-Jenson?
-
Drua

-
@chimoaus rested for this one, along with Jordie, Ardie and Julian
-
And, finally, the official team announcement:
-
Unavailable for selection: Devan Flanders, Ruben Love, Brayden Iose, Reed Prinsep, Pepesana Patafilo, Teihorangi Walden, Peter Umaga-Jensen, Pouri Rakete-Stones, Julian Savea, James Blackwell
Unavailable due to All Blacks rest week: Ardie Savea, Jordie Barrett -

Also, Riley Higgins (if he gets on) is making his Super debut at 19. He surely must be one of the youngest in recent history.

Not sure how accurate this is but try it anyway

@Canes4life Or Covid related, something they'll never publish. Pro athletes can be affected by long-Covid, too, especially if they start training too soon.
Although, it would be typical Canes to drop a player as soon as it's clear that he won't re-sign/be re-signed, no matter how useful that player could be.

https://all.rugby/club/hurricanes/squad#:~:text=The Hurricanes squad for 2021%2F2022 , 1.85 m 17 more rows8 hookers. And Blackwell is shown as a backrow selection. But good to have these stats and full list of names that are sometimes missing from the Canes website
-
@Winger Not all other stats are reliable either. For example, they count being named in the 23 as "matches" (caps), even if the player never came of the bench.
-
Hope Franks & Coles can get through 20-30 minutes off the bench without injury... if they can stay fit going into the latter part of the comp it will be a big plus for the Canes.
Be interesting to see how Laubscher goes at 8.
-
This is a very lightweight loose forward trio. The intent is probably to counter the speedy Drua backline.
-
Anyone else thinks an upset is possible in this game? I'm not confident at all that the Canes will win this.
-
@Stargazer I feel $5 to win and $7 for 1 - 12 for Drua is generous
-
Great D by the Drua
-
Lomax been isolated twice already.
-
-
Canes need to change the angle of attack one in a while...
Good D from Drura too.
-
@chimoaus Really poor clear out by Numia and IWL
-
High tackle missed there was it?
-
The no look behind passes have gone to nobody far too often by NZ teams lately.
-
@Mattasaurus Penalty given.
-
47 tackles to 4 at moment, Drua making a lot of tackles early.
-
Hurricanes offside a few times there on D which was missed.
-
Do the NH refs let not straight throws go like they do in Super rugby?

I was wondering about that last night too..
Also do they let the defensive lines stand offside all the time?
-

I don't mind them letting the marginal ones go if it was uncontested. Only call it if the opposition is disadvantaged by the throw IMO.
-
Tyler Laubsher going well in his first start
-
Beautiful line by Sullivan and Moorby.
-
Kicking to a midget like Wes Goosen (who's marked by a much bigger opponent) makes just as much sense a kicking to Mitch Hunt in the Highlanders game.
Great try to Moorby.
-
Morgan is playing well so far. He needs to keep attacking the line.
-
Moorby has looked good in his opportunities this year.
