All Blacks World Cup bolters
-
Early doors but interested to hear which players are seen as the World Cup bolters;
For mine so far, Shaun Stevenson is a standout on current form and his achievements last year.
-
A halfback, depending on form and injury status, probably Roigard.
-
There's something badly wrong if Stevenson is not at least in an all blacks squad this year
-
Outside backs are always the most likely positions for bolsters in a RWC year. Jordie is probably a midfielder now, Liecester seems to be out of favour, plus who knows what’s going on with Jordan’s health. So there should be room
Stevenson the most likely as a wing/fullback
Maybe there’s room for a new cap as a power wing to backup Clarke and take LF’s spot?
-
We need a big 6 with line out and ball carrying ability. Not sure who this is?

That's Scott Barrett, in the current thinking

We need a new cap to replace Clarke, or at least someone to teach how not to fall over all the time!
-
@Machpants
It’s not SB, he’s a lock and one of our best ones -

Blackadder?
-
@Machpants LF is a lot more at risk
-
Stevenson and Roigard for me so far.
-
If we look at the 2019 RWC squad there wasn't an uncapped bolter like NMS in 2015. The closest to bolters were Jacobson and Moli, who debuted in Arg before the squad was announced. Weber also came back from the cold.
Edit: NMS played 2 tests before the RWC as well.
-
@Bovidae and that’s the last one win won

he was ridiculous that season. We'll always have 2015 wtih NMS, but he never got near that again. Incredible player in his prime, just lit the RWC up with the ridiculous stepping.
-
Weber and Mackenzie subbed on at same time
-
Thinking more about this, a bolter is more likely to be selected from the AB XV, because if player X makes the AB squad they are already in contention for the RWC.
-
Stevenson will be a bolter if he makes it. The coaches didn’t rate him good enough for the ABXV.
-
@Nepia I doubt they're still of the same view, considering he was excellent when he played for the ABXV.

He was excellent at times for the chiefs, then the Maori and then NPC so not sure I’m that confident. 🤣

Telea was basically the one who took LF's spot. So if Stevenson is a bolter, and they retain Telea, then it should be Clarke's spot that's on the line.

@Canes4life so we have Smith, Christie, Fakatava, Roigard, Weber, Perenara. Seems like a strong position. Who misses out? I think they’ll go with Smith, Christie (not my choice) with one other. For me Fakatava if they choose Christie but who knows?

Christie stepped up to Test rugby well but seems to have regressed a bit speed-wise. Probably still OK to finish a match, but I'd be wary of his starting one.
Problem for me is lack of experience starting at 9 in a Test. Perenara might have the edge on that, but if Roigard continues his form and Foster & co think he'll handle the transition, I think he'll be in the squad.

I hope not too but the relative lack of experience at 9 is worrying and there isn't much time...
-
@Victor-Meldrew I get the experience thing. But I don’t think we are good enough at the moment to play it safe. Weber/Perenara staying at home (aka an hr away at some French beach) and coming in if Smith is injured suits me. So it leaves room for a bolter. If Fakatava or Roigard, whatever. But we won’t beat Ireland or France by being predictable.

Oh, I don't think we have any option other than to do that, but it's an area of real concern for me. Fakatava's injury and lack of games for, say, Roigard to be blooded is a real problem
-
@Bovidae Sevu Reece was a bolter in 2019, wasn't even on a full super contract at the start of that year
-
@FakatavaAllBlack Levi Aumua, real unit in the centres.
-
Rameka Poihipi as a midfielder

Yeah, Reece might be the closest in that squad, but he also started in 3 tests before the RWC squad was announced. Maybe the days of unexpectedly selecting an uncapped player for a RWC is over in the professional era.
-
@Bovidae Shaun Stevenson a certainty if Will Jordan is out, even if he is not he would still add some electrifying extra speed.

Big fucking asterisk with the bold.

He's had a great start to the season. Him and DMac
-
Only seen him play a little bit, but if Peter Lakai can get some decent SR game time, he could be one to consider as a bolter in a month or two.
-
PPP ?

His boot is also an asset and needed if BB or RM are the pivots.
-
@cgrant Was awesome the year before last, hampered by injury. Hopefully he hasn't sustained anything too serious.

Imagine the joy on the face of an opposition forward looking up and seeing he's running at Laulala, Moody and Parkinson. He'd probably run back again just to run past them twice.

Came in to post his name. The boy is confident.

Looking and Ireland and France , a few "lumps" would be welcome in the NZ squad.
Havili et al is not going to cut it.
