The “lucky loser” drops one rank
So the Canes would go top rank in that scenario then?
-
I think so

Ioane getting cocky because he scored three tries against a weak Tahs team to make him look good.
Settle down - what's he supposed to say - they are going to roll over and die - defending champs should go in with some level of confidence.

Is it just me or is the playoff set up the most complicated thing since forever?
-
@MiketheSnow seems more complicated than it actually is but only in the QFs.
-
@MiketheSnow I dont think it's too complicated. But I'll admit it's not simple.
I think it would be better and easier to follow if lucky loser dropped to the bottom seed, not just drop one spot. -
@MiketheSnow I find it not right how one of the Brumbies or the Hurricanes could get beaten by 100+ points next weekend, but rise up from the dead for the Semi Final.
👏 That's 👏 not 👏 knockout 👏 Rugby. 👏
-
The only way the Brumbies v Hurricanes game isn't a dead rubber is if either the chiefs or crusaders lose. Then the brumbies v hurricanes is a straight knock out...
-
@WestieFella But they will know the results of those other two games by the time they play. That is surely a massive error by the organisers.
We could have a spectacle that lets down the fans who have played to watch a knockout match and does massive damage to the reputation of the tournament.
-
@sparky exactly. The best way would be to schedule 3v4, then 2v5, then 1v6 on that order.
3v4, the loser can't assume they'll be the lucky loser as either #1 or #2 might lose.
2v5, likewise #2 can't afford to lose in case #1 was to slip up. #5 can never be a lucky loser.
1v6, #1 is always going to get a second chance regardless of the previous results, and #6 can never be a lucky loser.I don't mind the concept, reward for finishing at the top after the regular season is a 2nd chance.
But having 3v4 last is just wrong. Also, I'd like the lucky loser to be seeded last for the semis. If you lose you get a 2nd chance but kiss goodbye to home field advantage, you now have to do it the hard way.
-
The only other way they could have done by having a top 6 playoff would be to give the top 2 a week off, then 3 hosts 6 and 4 hosts 5. Winner over those matches plays 1 and 2 in the semis.
-
@Canes4life Nope. You could have the team that loses by least from the three play off games be the lucky loser. They are other ways to sort this. The Super Rugby authorities have chosen an option that risks deciding into farce.

Nah that’s worse than what they’ve got IMO because it doesn’t reward the higher ranked team over a whole season. I don’t mind the lucky loser scenario because if there were more teams in this comp then the 4th placed team would be hosting a quarter final anyway and would likely have gone through.
The one team Super Rugby probably didn’t want hosting that 3v4 game were the Brumbies. I’m not surprised at all that this game has been scheduled on Saturday but unfortunately it means we’ll have a ‘friendly’ type situation on our hands if both 1 and 2 win prior to the match kicking off.

I tell you what if my Canes went out and said it doesn't matter if we win or lose as we still got a life, I would find it very hard to support them again.
Don't worry they won't say it, but they will be thinking it. It’s a very human thought.

That's not knock out Rugby and it will turn Super Rugby into a laughing stock.
