Could be the last season we see every NPC match broadcast.

Is this an assumption or something they've mentioned?

Feel like this gets said every year but still hasn't happened.

Could easily see camera numbers drop off further though, and other cost cutitng measures. It's a real pity - still has huge potential as a player development programme with provincial rivalry that's 'real', but it's been malnourished for ages

Believe Sky have proposed broadcasting one Friday night game and one Saturday night game.

Sky don't own the OBU anymore so that is a cost.

If they don't broadcast every game let's get back to 2:30 pm kickoffs.

So just 2 out of 7 games broadcast a weekend?

The NPC will be an amateur comp within a couple of years. I wonder if sky will show more interest in the proposed SR u23 comp next year?

Not a surprise if this happens.. but this is also why I argued it was in smaller provinces interest to back competition reform because this was the likely outcome without reform

A negotiating tactic? NZR has confirmed all matches will be broadcast live by Sky Sport. One game a week on Sky Open

I guess Sky will do some cost cutting etc, it happens.
I go to Naki games, so that doesn't worry me, but understand why we don't want it.
I already got out tickets for the year anyway, and as we have a couple of bonus Shield games including one in Manaia, I am quite happy. Also I see on Sept 13th, when ABs play Boks in Wellington , Naki is travelling, so I don't need to miss that!! Good stuff, only one trouble is NPC is my favorite comp, and it's still a fair bit of a wait until it starts.

That's next year, proposal. TV rights deal isn't done, so we have no idea what will happen next year

The article is about rugby broadcasting rights but there is a focus on the value of the NPC as Sky and NZR have vastly different views. It's estimated to cost about $7M to broadcast the NPC and FPC (in addition to the broadcasting rights).

    @Bovidae

I found it and interesting reality check. What about the proposition of 'Super rounds' all games played at one or two venues each week to reduce costs?

Travel costs for the teams would be significant too. Short bus trips (< 4 h) vs two flights from provincial cities.

Sky is understood to want to significantly cut back on broadcasting the provincial competitions, which draw relatively small audiences and drive few subscribers, yet cost an enormous amount to cover. NZ Rugby, in contrast, regards widespread coverage of that level of the game as an essential part of its broadcast deal.

I hope they aren’t forcing people to bid on NPC and FNPC as a single package with widespread coverage. Even though the interest in NPC is dropping every year I’m sure it attracts a lot more eyeballs than woman’s NPC. Each competition should make its own economic case

I see that Fletcher Morgan, who played for the Highlanders Bravehearts, was encouraged to move south by Rugby Southland with the possibility of earning a Southland Stags contract if he played well during the club season.

With Taha Kemara gone until 2026, Waikato will need to find another 1st 5. Hopefully D'Angelo Leuila is returning, and Aaron Cruden has indicated he is keen to play for another season. However, there will be a spot for someone via club rugby.
