@kiwimurph Interesting. I wonder whether the Canes have signed him as well.

Edit: I just read on the Manawatu website that he has been brought in to cover for Jackson Hemopo.

@stargazer Yeah I'd suggest he'd have to show a bit more than he has thus far to pick up a Super contract. Haven't been blown away when I've seen him in the past but he's still young and has talent so gets a good opportunity now.

He was very good for the AB U20 last year but looked a bit lost in the Mitre 10 Cup. Though he has the physique of a blindside flanker, he is more effective in the second row.

@taniwharugby said in Mitre 10 Cup - news, injuries etc:

TAB Odds, dont look to have changed much in past few weeks or since squads have come out, recon there are some generous odds in the Premiership side.

    Championship Odds:
    Otago $3.25
    Waikaot $3.75
    BOP $4.50
    Manawatu $6.00
    Northland $6.00
    HB $10.00
    Southland $41.00

    Premiership Odds
    Canterbury $1.90
    Wellington $5.00
    Taranaki $7.00
    Ta$man $7.00
    NH $9.00
    Auckland $12.00
    CM $21

The big question is how much Canterbury might have come back towards the pack with people like Mo'unga (huge) and Luke Whitelock unlikely to be available, and Rob Thompson gone to Manawatu - plus other losses?

Can't recall quite how many points Mo'unga scored in last year's final - but it was about 25 and he set up at least one other try.

On the other side of the coin, Ta$man (the beaten finalists) have probably been weakened by international call-ups and injuries in key positions - we'll be missing Perry, Hames, Frizell, Squire, Samu and Taufua (injury) - plus the losses overseas of Halanukunuka and Lowe.

These are offset somewhat by recruiting Crockett, Brown and Alaimalo, but depth still looks thinner than last year. Injuries will kill us.

@chris-b Yes, Mo'unga scored 25 points (a new record for points scored in a final). I think a lot of teams will be happy he's in the ABs now. He was a pain in the ass for every opponent. Canterbury will also miss someone like Funnell, who's out for the season.

I think Ta$man will have a good chance against Canterbury and in the comp, generally; they have seriously good looking squad.

Btw, James Lowe didn't have much impact on Ta$man's performance last year, did he? Injured most of the time? Unless you mean "impact by absence".

@stargazer James played in the final though, so he could have had massive impact.

Your dislike of him has been well noted, though - doubtless he scored plenty of points vs Hawkes Bay?!! πŸ™‚

@chris-b You must confuse me with someone else. I've never called him a dick. He was a good SR player.

It's somewhere inbetween "multiple" and "never"....

    @stargazer said in Waikato v Ta$man:

Was just about to write how disappointing James Lowe has been during this game and then he gets a yellow for being a dick. Well, officially it was for a deliberate knock-down, but he's been annoying all game.

Took me 30 seconds. If it'd taken a minute, I'd have given up...

Except for Wellington. unless my memory is going he was poor in this match with JGB easily outplaying him.

    @stargazer

I want to see Goosen at 2nd and Proctor outside him too see how it goes. But it will be a competitive midfield battle to see who starts at 2nd (Proctor as captain will be the main starter at center)

Lam and Ranata will likely start with maybe Filipo. With JGB and Va'a options at first. I hope to see Price have a run at HB maybe initially as a replacement

How would Fidow go as a LH with Jeff Toomaga-Allen available now?
