John Carpenter's frequent soundtrack collaborator embraces the darkness in advance of Halloween.

You may not know the name Alan Howarth, but you'll surely have heard his music before. He's been involved with the sound design of movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Poltergeist and all of the Star Trek movies. Some of his finest work, though, has come in collaboration with John Carpenter, whose soundtrack to Escape from New York has been beloved, rinsed and re-edited by countless DJs. Renowned for his murky and unstable atmospheres, Howarth's work is perfect for this time of year, which is exactly why we asked him to delve into his archives to provide a special Halloween mix in honor of his performances at this year's Unsound festival.
http://ra4.residentadvisor.net/audio/RA230_101025_Alan-Howarth-residentadvisor.net.mp3 -
Musiq is fantastic! Been a fan for years.
I think he's the only artist that I have bought every album that he's released. Quite a different sound than most other R&B artists -
A good question. I'm listening to a mix of all different stuff from different eras.

-- The Cramps (punkbilly band from the early '80s)

--Old Johnny Cash (Get Rhythm, Cry, Cry Cry, Walk the Line, etc.)

--Geto Boys (gangsta rap, but really good gangsta rap)

--She & Him (new, retro early 60's sound) -

The first song is from earlier in his career and one of my favourites the second song my wife walked out to the instrumental for our wedding. Was our first dance song too. -
Not a big fan of either guy but they have their moments and this is smooth as.
It's unfortunate that this cat doesn't make music very often, easily shit on any RnB artist of the last 20 years!
This guy I guess was like a James Taylor of rap. Adult contemporary and smooth. Took up with Kanye West and went mainstream. Still quality but a bit too pop.
ODB of Wu Tang fame - a R18 classic!
