Ok..what? Self described Asians are claiming the word Asian as a descriptor for them is 'incredibly racist service'..and it makes the front page of stuff.
If you think your own ethnic background "Asian" is a pejorative then I think it might be you with the problem not the restaurant.
"I definitely will never go there again."
I'm sure that suits everyone.

next we will have rangas moaning about Ginger beer!

I think it should be obvious now that if you want to kill someone and get away with it you hit them with a car and you’ll be unlucky to even get a slap on the wrist .

Total BS

@jegga yup our laws around driving are way, way too lax. Even if they're going 50% above the speed limit it always just gets treated as an "accident". Sorry, if you're speeding and you crash that isn't an accident, that's you willfully putting innocent people's lives at risk. It should be treated as such, with way harsher sentences. It's little wonder so many people die on the roads.
-
@No-Quarter our roads are shite, but it is driver behaviour that is the root cause, and largely Kiwi drivers, not foreign ones.
-
@No-Quarter Personally I reckon if you kill someone while drunk driving/drug driving/speeding, it should be an automatic manslaughter charge. And the driver should never be eligible for a license again. It's not a right.
-
@Mokey I always recall one that came over my desk several years back, the initial police report said the guy was doing between 110-125kmh...
Serious Crash Unit report concluded he was doing between 190-200kmh, was even on that SCU programme they had on for a while there...the implications of the differing speeds was monumental!
He lost his licence for 6 months for dangerous driving!

I can actually understand her logic. She just wants to be seen as everyone else in her native country and when some someone refers to her as "Asian" there can be whole shitload of loaded nuances that goes with that term.

Being of that ethnicity if it happened to me I might be annoyed, depends on how I was treated by the staff. Maybe I'd boycott the place if I felt that strongly (depends how good the food was....). Maybe I'd tell my mates. I don't think I'd go whingeing to the media about it though, seems like the response was disproportionately strong

That would be her own insecure interpretation though, not necessarily that of the new inexperienced and likely teenager server who now has a national front page news article branding them and their place of employment as racist.

Agreed - particularly if you have the suspicion that they're not putting "terrorists", "africans" etc. on everyone else's bill. There's just no need for it - number your tables.
-
@antipodean we had a 'webinar' a year or so back with an Aussie company, and the presenter described thier bearded Pakistani employee as 'whatever his name was The Terrorist'
Oh man, the faces of the people in our other branches was priceless, let alone one of the females in our office, whats more, is he said this twice in the 45 min presentation!

LOL - I've worked in teams where nicknames like that are thrown around constantly but I'd die if it ever slipped out during a presentation with people outside of the team.

There's absolutely nothing racist about calling Asians Asians. That term gets so badly misused these days it has absolutely no meaning anymore. Does she get offended filling out forms that ask for her ethnicity?
Sure it's a little unprofessional but publicly calling out a business and the person serving them as racist is fucking way over the top.

I've never quite understood why Kiwi's group everyone from Iran - the Philippines as "Asian" and then get hot and bothered when called an Aussie.
Given the negativity associated with "Asian" I can understand that she got triggered. We wouldn't be questioning her stance if the restaurant worker had described a customer as "black"
Why ring the Ferald though? That I don't get

I’ve never heard anyone here call anyone from the subcontinent Asian , that seems to be a British thing .
I did have the misfortune of having my hair cut years ago by a moron . In the background the tv was playing and there’d been a bank robbery and the police said they were looking for two caucasians and when she heard that said “ tsk its always those bloody asians “.
-
@dogmeat said in Alternative needed from the absolute crap of stuff.co.nz:
@jegga maybe it's an Auckland thing. I frequently hear everyone lumped in as Asians - subcontinent included
I too have never heard a Kiwi refer to Iranians as Asian, and we've always separated 'East' Asians and Indians.

@No-Quarter Yes, her response was as immature as the actual "incident". And the restaurant with someone named Arvind Kumar as a manager is probably far from "racist" or whatever that means these days. Ignoring the obvious media narrative and her response to the incident the core issue of labeling the group "Asians" in that context still lacks common sense.
