Interesting that this religion and these views have been rightly pummelled and labelled medieval nonsense, yet not a single comment about bigotry or Christianityphobia. Does that only apply to a certain other religion? I hope certain people can see the hypocrisy in all this. Bad ideas, customs and beliefs need to be challenged regardless of their origins.

Interesting hearing Raelene Castle stress that the game is inclusive regardless of race, gender, sexuality and religious beliefs.
I would imagine my dreams of playing for the Australian women's rugby team would be discriminated against on the basis of at least two of those (along with talent).
Nonsense. Do a Hannah Mouncey, identify as a woman and lace up your boots.

I'd imagine divorce is a deadly sin as well.
The focus is on his "anti-gay rant" but in reality anything other than breathing seems to be a sin in this guy's world.

@Rancid-Schnitzel yeah but our only Muslim rugby player is coming out and saying 'as long as your good to others, I like you' not 'burn in hell faggot' So bringing up other religions and anti Christian stuff not entirely relevant. If SBW posts about the "Qur’an (4:16) demands unspecified punishment for men guilty of lewdness together unless they repent", then he'd lose his job too. Btw that's the only mention of homosexually being forbidden in the Qur'an, all the fundamentalist stuff from the Muslim world is based on their culture more than scripture. Your also need four eye witnesses before you could be punished, tricky one that!

@Machpants I don’t think a reporter has actually asked SBW his opinion about gays etc , considering he hangs out with a preacher that says they are worse than animals I suspect the NZRU might have a hand in making sure that those questions aren’t being asked.

If Izzy's twitter feed precludes him from selection I can only imagine my Fern post history would do the same.

That's not true at all, the fundamentalist stuff comes from not just the Koran but the Hadith as well. In this context the Hadith is most important as that is what Sharia Law is based on, which defines the punishment for homosexuals.
Don't want to derail the thread as this is not about Islam, but the "it's culture not religion" argument is badly flawed and also goes some way to excusing that religion of the scorn and criticism it deserves.
Also on SBW, he lost a BMW contract for his public support of an Imam that believes gays are worse than animals. So he's been burnt already, guess he has learnt to stay quiet.

Yeah I don't agree with his, or any religion, they should all be banned. But foolau is not being fired because he's a bigoted religious nutter, but because he broke social media rules he signed up, and incidentally accepted millions of filthy lucre from gay supporting organisations and businesses, for. SBW may also be a bigoted religious nutter, but he still had his Jocelyn because he's filtering his employers rules he signed up to. Maybe after he tries he'll go full issues Daesh on us, I dunno having met him at welly airport, but he could.

@No-Quarter true I was ignoring the hadith which is hearsay, but your right, I'm in error for the entire book

@taniwharugby Don't worry all the cool people are there.
And some pretty shitty ones, admittedly

@Machpants not to mention the fact that if there is a Hell, then there must be a heavan, but you arent allowed to enjoy a cold beer or a good single malt there? Fuck that!

I think you misunderstood what I wrote. Criticism of a certain other religion is very often met with accusations of bigotry and racism (for a religion?) and such criticism is even referred to as a phobia. Yet none of those accusations have been levelled during this pile on of Folau's religion. It's an absurd double standard. We should never be accused of bigotry for calling out bad ideas.

Well I wouldn't ban religions as that would go against free speech, which is a critical part of our society - most importantly for minorities. I have no issues with people seeking meaning in their lives through faith - that's a very human trait. Science has dispelled a lot of the medieval myths associated with religion but it does not address spirituality at all which is why they persist. I guess what I'm advocating for is reform - keep the good spiritual stuff and chuck out the medieval nonsense.
Also don't forget Qantas isn't a gay supporting organisation, as they cut deals with state-owned Airlines whose governments have severe punishments for gays. They are all about the bottom line, don't be fooled by their stance on social issues - they've just decided that it helps with their brand which means more money.

@Siam I'd be interested to know what sort of guy he was in the team environment (Tahs and for Oz). Can't recall him ever being described as a prima donna, but also haven't heard much about him being a leader within the squad.
I can recall Auckland and Blues teams having a the occasional team huddle prayer led by Kevin Mealamu (only one I can recall, quite likely others have too). Can recall the odd comment for how that went/felt for the guys that weren't religious. But from memory it was all good and very much each to their own. I guess that, alongside other devout (legends) like MJ, shows how rugby and religion has overlapped in NZ.
I heard one of the main reasons counting against Eroni Clarke being selected back in the day was that he was very evangelical.
