Still wondering about the polling industry? Beginning to think they’re next to useless — until they can calculate and account for the effect of self-censorship in the culture.
Is it a possibility that a good % of people are fed-up with p.c. sjw lynch mob cancel-culture and won’t tell strangers what they think, not even in a confidential opinion poll? Especially in a climate where speaking your religious views can get you sacked from your job??
The only poll that matters is the one a voter answers in the voting booth.

Since living in Straya I have noticed that the politicians are very much inclined to react to opinion polls. Party leaders seem to get rolled if the polling is bad. But the polls have often predicted one thing but come the election (at both State and Federal level) the result is different. So what's the point of pandering to distorted numbers?
@Salacious-Crumb makes a good point that today's electorate reacts differently to 20years ago.

The weird thing is that socially desirable responding to polls/researchers isn’t new, I can remember reading papers about it 20 years ago. Some polling companies certainly aren’t spending any of their fees on modelling it...
Yeah it was noted back in the 90s in the Uk where they called it the shy tory effect. Not surprising they got it wrong again, I'd imagine there's a layer of the Christchurch/Neve effect in our polls too but when it comes to election day the results would be a bit different.

Very similar here, also they tend to overestimate how popularity on social media actually compares to their popularity in the real world where people pay taxes, mortgages etc.

Just had a look at the planet rugby aussie politics thread, the two biggest labor supporters seem to be two haughty sanctimonious expat kiwis and their disbelief is amusing to see. I'll drop by to watch them work through the seven stages of grief . Theres a bit of anger for people voting with "their hip pocket" which is reminiscent of Laila Harre whining after the Alliance got the arse that people "voted with their heads, not with their hearts.

Jumping at shadows? No, just stating facts. If you seriously think SBS isn't biased then I'm sure you believe Fox News is actually fair and balanced.
Maybe so but that is an unrelated comment to the tweet you jumped all over.
An ex SBS autocue reader posts a nasty tweet and that proves bias from the channel? Yeah right. No, it's completely fair. Her tweet totally reflects the views openly expoused by SBS. I'm sorry if that's too hard for you to swallow. What would you know about it anyway. You probably never even watched SBS.
No, it’s following your logic that I am finding hard.
I do know about SBS. I have lived in Australia and I understand they can be perceived to have a bias just (as you mention) others do.
Is it really that difficult to admit that your original post was off the mark? How was my post off the mark Crucial? SBS is know for its bias and this woman was one of the faces of SBS for decades. And why on earth do you even care?
The second question is just bizarre. This is a discussion forum and I am discussing.
As I said, I don't get your logic that an ex employee of an organisation who, during her tenure, had no editorial or direction say, is an example of organisational and editorial bias.
You clearly made a mistake in the first place, not realising she doesn't work for them anymore and are now being pig headed about it.
By all means find examples of SBS being biased and make them relevant to the discussion at hand, but this was about her nasty tweet and you joined it to an unrelated point you wanted to make
Not really. As you may have noticed, there has been an election in Australia but you're far more invested in trying to argue that SBS lady is not a symptom of their bias. Now read carefully. There has been much gnashing of teeth about the Murdoch press. I agree that they're generally shit and biased. But as that tweet from a woman who was one of the highest profile SBS employees demonstrates, there are taxpayer funded medial outlets that are just as bad if not worse. Now you can desperately try to claim that she is an outlier and in no way reflects the views of that organisation, but that would be like claiming the sky is green.

At the end of the day Abbott is still a dick, and both sides of the House are probably happy that he has gone. I always thought SBS were quite impartial, will watch now and try and pick out all of this obvious bias.

Australia has become less homogeneous. Given the massive demographic changes in the past twenties years polling has become more challenging. Also let's not forget the vintage Newspoll is called the Two Party Preferred model and preference flow has become more strategic and complicated by independents in recent times.
Outside of Labor's (somewhat) underperformance in Victoria is there any aspect of the result that in isolation is surprising? Between Adnani and the franking credits policies almost all the Coalition overperformance is explained.
-
So the two front runners for Labor Leader are from the NSW Left. One of them states that Labor didn't have enough time to explain to the electorate how they'd all benefit from Labor's policies.
Talk about doubling down on dumb.

Mining in Central Queensland has offered thousands of ordinary Queenslanders a quick path to 100% equity in their homes, high quality education for their children, the opportunity to investment themselves into financial independence, job certainty and so on. Much of it came as FIFO employment but some rural centres grew to offer an attractive lifestyle away from the cities.
The Beattie and Bligh governments made a fortune from royalties (most of which they wasted).
The mining communities don't have any time for people from George Street, Brisbane who know what's best for them and they treat Canberra blow ins with utter disdain.
Has been Greens poser Bob Brown took a caravan of unwashed professional protesters up through the Adani / Carmichael Mine surrounds about three weeks ago, a master stroke for the Coalition.
Local pubs and motels refused to serve them and hundreds of locals turned out to watch them, closely. They want local jobs, not over in WA, and Adani could have been employing thousands already.
They well know that Labor's Mar'n F'rsson, granted in principle approval to Adani just before he retired six years ago. That has been thwarted by Bono Pocock's li'l kindy friends ever since, because they hate Australia and Australians.
The vote tells the story clearly.
Labor copped a swing against of -3.4% in Queensland and ceded two seats to the Coalition. It already held Maranoa, in the northern coalfields, and it swung a further 6.4% (75% counted), a huge movement.
