@raznomore what do you think of some of the Sydney breweries?
BTW, not sure if you are based out of Queensland or NSW, you mentioned earlier in the thread the Gold Coast but then also mentioned Manly?
Have you had the opportunity to try the Marrickville breweries:
Sauce, Batch, Grifter and Willie the Boatman being the core then there is Wildflower, apparently brilliant beers but hardly ever open and Blackfont, the newest, both of which I haven't visited yet or even tried their beers.Love Sauce and Willie's. Batch is a bit hit and miss, with very "grunge" styling and feel to me. Grifter is good with other beers on tap, not just their own but a bit too polished and a polar opposite to Batch.
Then there is the one that is close but not in Marrickville which really started it all in Sydney and is arguably the most successful, Young Henry's. Really liked it when it first opened but I find their beers haven't grown with the rest of the industry. For example, they haven't yet put out a Hazy or NEIPA.
My favourite Sydney brewery and probably overall favourite Aussie brewery over all is Akasha. Absolutely brilliant beers and also a great place to visit.
Have you had a chance to try Akasha yet?

Had a good afternoon at Willie the Boatman as part of a brewery tour. They had an axe throwing place next door.
Wildflower brew their beers "traditionally". You may be forgiven for noticing the placement of the men's piss trough next to the vats.

Love Willie's but they have moved now, mid last year, so no longer next to the ax throwing. The new place is much more modern and shinier without the same character as the old place. Has lost a bit of it's charm to be honest.
Haven't yet been to Wildflower and yes, I'd heard they brew in a more traditional method as you say. Natural yeast and fermentation. Interesting comment about the urinals, will have to look out for that when I get to finally visit.
The biggest problem is that they only open like twice a week and never at a day/time I've been to Marrickville.
But on another note, how good is the Marrickville crafty crawl...
Get off at Sydenham station, first stop Batch (or Blackfont if it's open) and keep on going until you're on your knees and back at the station to head home.BTW, how could I miss Stockade brewery from my previous post with the list of Marrickville breweries. I got them and Grifter mixed up. Stockade is the one with other breweries beers on tap. What I like about Stockade is their fixed-in-place food truck, serves awesome burgers!

@RoninWC I live on the GC but was recently in Manly for a boys trip.

haven't had any of these but will seek them out. Young Henry's have a brewery at The Farm in Byron Bay. I've had a couple goes at their stuff and it was ok. I haven't had Akasha but have heard good things about their limited releases.
I saw 4 Pines In Season IPA is pouring at the moment. That stuff is probably my favourite Sydney beer. All of 4 Pines other stuff is average but that one with the Nelson Sauvin hops is delicious. Not a Hazy but still bloody good.

Ah okay, got it. So I can safely assume you've been to, if not a regular, at Black Hops?
One of my "beer bucket-list" places to visit.
BTW, love Burleigh Heads, I have family there but haven't visited for years.
As for Young Henry's, they have fallen off the pace, IMO.
That 4 Pines is pretty good and the best thing about it is that it's widely available across Sydney, especially the CBD, at less crafty pubs.
IMO, their core range is pretty average but some of their Keller Door limited editions have been very very good.Akasha really does some awesome beers, their limited editions such as their current hazy, Cloud 9 is awesome. The Korben D is my absolute favourite Double IPA (at 8.5% ABV) going!
Of the Akasha core range, the Hopsmith IPA is a very, very good example of straight IPA and their Mosaic IPA is the best single hop IPA in Aus, IMO.

I have been to their production tap room in Biggera Waters and was impressed with what they had. But yet to go to the original one in Burleigh - which is apparently awesome in the weekends.
I have been going fairly regularly to Lost Palms brewery in Miami. Its got a cool beach vibe and they have a good mix of DJ/live music from week to week. The beers are still evolving but they get better every time I get down there. It's a short walk to the best craft beer bar on the GC too - Bine Bar.

@raznomore Haven't heard of them, had to look them up. The Double Dry Hopped IPA sounds good, any recommendations?
-
Impressions of Sauce? Apparently we're getting one up here.
It'll hurt because it's on the site of the brewery we built that went under...

Should've done it at the time, but had a full itinerary.
But on another note, how good is the Marrickville crafty crawl...
This was the tour when I did it last. We took a more "roundabout" route.
-
@antipodean That's a great tour but from Wayward to Willies is quite the hike.
I also notice that Stockade is missing from the stops and it's pretty much in between Batch and Sauce. Strange it isn't included as that would make it a nice round number of 10 breweries.
When we do the Marrickville craft crawl, we do it this way...
Everyone has to have a full tasting paddle (but you can chose which beers to have in the paddle) and then a full glass of their favourite. And yes, eating is allowed or you'll be done way too quickly.
Makes for a fun afternoon and an evening asleep on the couch with an annoyed wife telling you to wake up or go to bed.

Back to the old discussion about light/low all beers and I discovered this one during the holidays
Had been hammering the liver for a couple of weeks and was restocking when I saw this and the idea of a beer I could drink all day was appealing. Bonus was that it is actually very nice. Not quite up there with the Croucher low alc IPA but cheaper. The Croucher one is excellent but it kind of defeats the purpose of having plenty without getting hammered at $4.50 each!
This was $15 a 6pack at Whack'n'Slave in Qtown.
Mot sure if it will hold up in the cooler months when I prefer a bit more weight to my drinks, but as a summer option it isn't watery, has a touch of bitterness and feels like drinking real beer. I am going to keep on it as a option.
PS: If you are worried about what anyone thinks of you for drinking low strength stuff, not one person even asked me what I was drinking, just assumed it was yet another 'craft' beer.

What was the previous consensus on the low-booze beers?
Being on the bike in NZ over summer - I'd quite like some options for staying under the limit.
Garage Project's Fugazi seemed alright. Haven't brought myself to try any others.... will try the Good George and the Croucher's when I get back up to BOP/Waikato area. -
I've never actually bought a Good George beer unless I was at one of their pubs/restaurants. But they seem to be everywhere now.
I was sampling some local brews over the holidays. That included some of the Sunshine Brewing beers in Gisborne and before that beers at Fork and Brewer and Hashigo Zake (Wellington). Unfortunately, the latter had a reduced selection available. I could have spent hours at Fork and Brewer, such was the number of beers available.

@Kruse Macs Mid Vicious is a decent drop for a low alcohol one too.
You should also try Heineken light or zero
I had a Mid Vicious somewhere along the line this summer and it was watery an flavourless compared to the Good George one.
Not saying that the GG one stands up to a full strength but it is one of the better ones out there. Actually has a little body and flavour.
As for that 0.0 shit, I sipped one and couldn't see the point. May as well have water. -
@Crucial I havent had the GG one yet, but for a low alcohol one, MV was one of the better ones I have had...generally not into low alcohol ones (due to most being average to poor) certainly not interested in zero alcohol ones.

2.5% (as in the GG one) is 0.7 of a standard drink.
Standard drink is the amount of alcohol that an average person can process in one hour. While there is no 'safe' calc as it depends on individuals the guidelines for a 85kg, 180cm tall male are 3.5 std drinks over 2 hours (which actually seems a lot to me)
The beauty of drinking mid strength is that you can process the alcohol without it building up a backlog.
e.g., if drinking 5% beer at 1 per hour, after 1 hour you have a residual amount of 1% still to process, have another and it is 2%, You third beer becomes a 7%er which starts to fuck you up.
At 2.5% you are clearing the alc out every 45 minutes as long as you aren't throwing them back fast.I was stopped at a random check after 2 Speights Mids (barely drinkable) over a couple of hours and didn't even trigger the reader. I'm only 75kg.

I know I can comfortably have 3 if I am driving and come in well under...I could have a 4th and be under the limit too, but no point testing it given there are other factors that could affect me one day.
