Movie review thread...

I did the same thing recently with 1917 with my kids. I think it’s important for kids to know stuff like this happens and start a conversation about it all.
Helps to not glamorise violence or war and understand how we got to where we are today.
Important to show that the more historical wars weren’t an abstract thing but involved young men that were real people

I’m keen to watch 1917 again to find out where exactly it sits in my list of War films.

Black Death
Hungover yesterday looking for something to watch, stumbled on this. Medieval. Sean Bean. Eddie Redmayne. Carice van Houten. Lord Percy/Captain Darling. Good cast! thought i would give it a look.
Essentially a knight and a monk plus extras go to find out why this one village isn't getting fucked by the Bubonic Plague, and to burn some witches and necromancers. Not a bad premise.
Turns out there is a reason i have never heard of this, despite it being 10 years old. It's a bit shit. I am still not sure what the fucking point was.
Some violence. No bewbs. A "plot" that doesn't really go anywhere.

1.5 conflicted monks out of 5 stretchy Sean Beans

Double Jeopardy
Ashley Judd and some others (Tommy Lee Jones etc.)
Plots not believable (husband frames wife for murder) but it's Ashley.
5 out of 5.

the implication of this hilarious when stacked against reality.

Gangster Squad. An anti organised crime unit in 1950s LA. Decent enough, though difficult to separate the Josh Brolin character from Thanos. I kept wanting it to be up there with LA Confidential or Mulholland Falls and it really got nowhere near, although some of the violence was a bit more overt.
2.5 Ryan Goslings out of 5 Russel Crowes.

Really looking forward to 1917, reviews are glowing and it is a genre I like.
Let me get this right; the premise is two men go wandering off into previously enemy held areas to prevent a regiment walking into an ambush? Because there's no other way to get the message through?
The film making is going to have to be awesome for me to to not sit there saying "bullshit" to myself the whole way through.
I think I'd rather watch Blackadder 4 and Journey's End again.
OK, mea culpa. I watched this and it's actually pretty good. Worth seeing.
1917
Watched it again today during the world's worst conference call. Cemented in my mind my original viewing impression was correct.
Single shot was really well done. Acting is superb. Captures the wanton waste and industrial scale slaughter really well.

Saving Private Ryan is still THE BEST War Movie ever made......fuck it is amazingly done.......well, it's about equal with Schindlers List but is that a War Movie or a movie that took place during the war ? both brilliant, shit Spielberg is a genius.
My boys are coming on a roadie with me for work this week and ex wife has given the go ahead to watch SPR on Netflix provided there's some parental guidance. Do other ferners reckon it's an appropriate flick for a 10 and 12 year old to watch ? interested in some thoughts.
I watched it again the other day. It is indeed, one of the best movies ever made. It really highlights the catastrophic waste of life that warfare is. Removes pretty much so all glory from it, and places the reality of it front and centre. For some reason something that really resonated with me is the sound of the landing craft grinding across the waves and the troops puking. It feels very very real. Adam Goldberg deserves to be mentioned in the acting conversations as well which made it so real.
The issue of watching it with your 10/12 year olds is interesting. I wouldn't do it at that age, not even close. Mainly because the answer to the questions are yes. As in yes this did happen, yes, people were killed so nonchalantly and yes this is reality. I don't think I could share that with my kids. I'd also make sure you discuss it with your
wifeex wife before showing them it ....Fixed.
We had a chat, I have the go ahead.
As long as I'm there for support and questions I think we'll be ok.
Good stuff. Make sure to post how it goes on here - I'm really interested. Maybe whack it in the Parenting thread.
Massive success.
Bloody funny, both boys whinged in the first few minutes about how this movie was gonna be "boring" ( as you all recall it's when old James Ryan goes to the cemetary to pay his respects ) but obviously I assured them it got better and shit it sure did.
Opening scene is as amazing as I remember and both of them were absolutely hooked and compelled. They know from Call of Duty that the allies had to be tactical and they couldn't just charge up the beach and hope for the best. They even felt a bit sorry for the Germans who got shot after surrendering.
A couple of gripes about the "boring talking bits" but as I said it helped flesh the characters out......and both of them looked like a family member had died when Carpazo and the medic ( forget his name ) died. Some genuine emotion.
The three of us obviously just loved all the action scenes......Oldest Boys favourite character was Jackson ( for his sniping abilities ).....youngest liked Reiben ( my favourite too ) but everyone got a positive mention. Even Upham at the end. Massive criticism from both for being a pussy but as I pointed out it's pretty easy to criticise from an armchair, way different if you're in the situation he was in.
What brought alot of it home was me reiterating this is what their Great Grandparents went through. Oldest who is a bit of a model nerd even named all the tanks that the Germans rolled in at the end ( Google confirmed he was correct neeeeerrrrrrrrddddddddd )
The whole thing took about 4 hours as there was quite a few pauses to explain as best as I could, I was a bit stumped for some answers and we googled a few bits and pieces.
I can't recommend it more, great bonding experience with my lads

Speaking of what age you should show kids films, I remembered that my mum took me to see Silence of the Lambs at the cinema when I was 11, I see it has an R18 rating now🙂
Pretty sure I was watching Friday 13th and all sorts of horror and war films from a young age. In fact Platoon was one of my favourite films as a kid. We used to pretend to die like Elias all the time.
I thought I would watch Lion King with my nephew and the poor kid had a meltdown when the dad died and I had to turn it off. -
The Social Dilemma
Okay, it's a documentary not a film, but it's on netflix.
Doc is about, obviously, the danger that social media poses to society. Interviews are with a bunch of guys who used to work for the big social companies. The interviews themselves are pretty good, focused on how the algorithms drive the social media business model. But it is interspersed with these acted bits that i guess try to humanise and illustrate their points, but just come across as cringy as fuck.
I guess the main message to come out is these companies aren't, contrary to popular opinion, manipulating searches to drive home their own agenda. Searches are manipulated to keep you engaged for as long as possible, based purely on the enormous amount of data they already have on you.
It's not bad, but it's not that great either. And i can't say there was any single "wow" moment in there.

Also, if you're someone who checks social media on their phone before taking morning piss, you're their target.
If you're not, you may just be OK.

watching it, my phone went "ding" and so my watch vibrated as well. i actually physically resisted the urge to check!
i think the point is everyone is their target.

@mariner4life i found the bits on the effect it may be having on kids pertinent. It's disturbing how many jobs I have responded to that are a result of kids, some younger than 10 years old, throwing tantrums and smashing property, assaulting mum or dad, or self harming because their ipads or phones have been taken away from them. The wee darlings are like miniature junkies.
