I kind of agree with Dogmeat really, if they are going to be accurate they need to speak German and have the film in subtitles. If they aren't going to do that it's less distracting for the actor to use their own accent.<br />
<br />
The whole point is to tell a story, so the less distractions from that the better. If you find yourself wondering about his accent, then the film has lost you anyway.<br />
<br />
To support my argument, see Far and Away for a film where trying the accent ruined it. -

Speaking English with foreign accents doesn't hinder the brilliance that is Schindlers list, mind you in some of the more chaotic scenes they speak in german... -
Anyone seen Downfall? It was a German film about Hitler's last days in the bunker and subtitled. Quite simply brilliant and one of the best films I've seen on WW2 in ages. After seeing that, Valkyrie seemed a bit silly really - even though I did enjoy it.

Downfall is a brilliant film. But I enjoyed Valkrie - I'm sure if Valkryie was done shot for shot with German actors it would be considered a much deeper film.<br />
<br />
Schindlers List didn't suffer to me, although maybe that was the black and white effect. The only film that the lack of accents has bugged me during was The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. I couldn't tell if they were english or german in the early scenes. -
Yea, Downfall is fuck off good. <br />
<br />
And i agree Nepia, if it had been done with German actors in German it would have been better. Still, star power sells...<br />
<br />
The accent thing didn't put me off the film. or even really register while i was watching it, it was something i thought about afterwards, and thought they missed a trick there, that's all. -

I would generally agree with you, thing is, I watched Schindlers List on Thursday night (still a fucking brilliant film) and then Valkyrie on Friday night, and I think that made me notice the accents issue, it did spoil it a bit for me having so many different English / American etc accents. I'd be very grateful if someone could explain to me why Eddie Izzard was putting on an American accent for the film too! -

I do hate that though, it aint like there are a shortage of actors out there, especially ones with small parts, and yet they still get people to put on accents, and sometimes they are appallingly bad! Be it a Pom to American or Aussie, or American to Pommy or Kiwi or whatever. -
I watched The Wrestler last night. I thought it was good in a bleak sort of way.
-
saw Separation City last night and thought it a bloody good watch. Nicely observed , well acted, very clever script in places with some excellent lines.<br />
<br />
A sort of comedy of manners really. Quite different to see a film on relationships written from the masculine pov (in the main) without trying to appeal to the boorish element or being aimed at the teen audience. Aims some nicely weighted missiles at the femi-nazi's too.<br />
<br />
Quite different for a Kiwi film and avoids the cultural cringe -
Generation Kill. A 7-part mini-series that chronicles the 1st Recon Marines during the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Supposedly one of the more realistic films/tv shows about the military. I thought it was hilarious, some of the characters were fantastic. Some of the scenes and topics ie, killing of civillians were shocking @ times.

Terminator Salvation, 7/10<br />
<br />
Worth a watch. -

The womens lib movement in NZ at the time was pretty toxic, a good reminder is in this weeks Listener has a story about "the unfortunate experiment.Turns out the inquiry got it wrong and the doctors career was ruined by Sandra Coney and Phillida Bunkle and their anti male agenda.Looking forward to this film Tom Scott did a great job with Mr Gormsby. -

[spoiler:2htav58q]I got chills mate when a certain person turned up in that movie[/spoiler:2htav58q][/quote]<br />

[spoiler:2htav58q]haha, yeah it was quite a surprise, I assume it CGI, with all the old footage wouldnt have been hadr[/spoiler:2htav58q] -
Watched Horsemen last night.<br />
<br />
Kind of a seven rip off. Started very well, was good till maybe two thirds through. One conversation on the street between Dennis Quaid(lead) and Zhang Ziyi(female lead) was very creepy.<br />
Then I picked the ending and was completely disappointed. Very predictable.<br />
<br />
Extremely strange ensemble cast. Wasted in the end. -
Watched 500 Days of Summer (shut up, it was free), supposed to be a rom-com, not a lot of com & no rom, its about a guy getting dumped (no spoiler they tell you that from word go), very quirky, but pretty good too, if you've ever been a wreck over some heartless whore who dumped you you'll get a lot out of it <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> was enough humour to make it worth the watch, wouldn't take a 1st date to it tho' as it'll polarise men & women, could take a long term missus to it tho'<br />
<br />
Watched Public Enemies too, great acting directing script etc, but pretty fecking boring really. Reminded me of The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (the brad pitt thing). Sort of "worthy" rather than being "fun" -
Just watched Smokin' Aces.<br />
<br />
Very long cast - longs of familiar faces. Pretty good movie as well.<br />
<br />
Based on a Las Vegas magician played by Jeremy Piven who they're trying to get to testify against the mob. He's holed up in Lake Tahoe. Ryan Reynolds and Ray Liotta are FBI agents assigned to get him once the deal is set. By a whole bunch of assassins are also heading there.<br />
<br />
Cast with Andy Garcia, Ben Affleck, Jason Bateman and Alicia Keys.<br />
<br />
Good shoot em up movie that has a lot of characters - sometimes too many, trying to sort through who's shooting who! Very enjoyable. -

You missed out Kiwi Martin Henderson. <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> <br />

I thought it was a good switch off your brain action film. -
I don't usually go for martial arts movies (even though I do kick box...poorly) but I really like Ong Bak. Story was shocking, much didn't really make sense and the acting was non existent. However the action and fight sequences were amazing. Tony Jaa is out of it. The stunts he performs are crazy. <br />
<br />
Tonight I watched Ong Bak 2. That movie is "fuck off" awesome. Viusally stunning. The acting is not going to win any oscars but it was a huge improvement on the first. The action sequences really put all the CGI crap to shame. No wires, if there are its hard to spot them, or harnesses like the hong kong industry heavily rely on. <br />
<br />
I give it a 9/10 awesome! -

I saw Ong Bok 1. Yeah. It was pretty freaky. The non-existent blocks in MTB freaked the sh#t out of me. Haven't seen OB2. Will get it out tomorrow.
