@Virgil also i hope i am not coming across too "woe is me" because i'm in a decent spot. I just know too many people who no longer are.
Nah mate we are all entitled to feel sorry for ourselves and be a bit titchy. No one knows what to feel or what will happen next. It’s all new only thing we can say is we are all in this together.
My new norm... walk in the door after a draining day at work, wife runs over tells me my clothes are contaminated and starts spraying shit all over. Growls at me for rummaging around picking new clothes to wear then tells me off for standing there not getting dressed fast enough.. like what the fuck..
the realities dawned on Mrs Mariner for the first time yesterday. I talked to her every day last week, but she obviously just dismissed it.
Mrs Rembrandt too..except she's had to deal with 6 weeks of my jabbering to finally take it seriously...now the hand sanitisers at the door aren't the work of a crazy germophobe.
Looks like her work has been designated an essential service, good for finances but it does mean we are likely to be getting a visit from Mr Corona at some point by the number of people she will come in close contact with (radiography). Will be good to get on the other side of that.
she's been all over the health, but the state of the local economy after this finishes wasn't occuring to her. it is now
and her accounting firm are now very worried. as of yesterday

My 3 month contract finished at the end of February (after 2.5 years). I was planning taking March off, then trying to find more work.
New plan, applied for a job stacking shelves at a local supermarket, more to have something to do and feel useful rather than sitting on my arse catching up with tv series for the next 6 weeks

Incidentally for any Aussie based ferners who are out of work and looking for something to tie them over at least in the short term maybe jump on this if its in your area
@raznomore (from memory I think you were one of these? Apologies if I've got that wrong)

After we all get through this, knocking on wood I wonder what forever changes will remain?
I imagine that international travel will never be the same. (Proof of health, tracing and all that) I also how millennials (and others for that matter) will effect change in the way they think, it's not war time but it is a restriction of freedoms most have never seen before. -

That didn't affect a lot of people. I didn't have to make one change during GFC and neither did any of my immediate family. I can't even think of any friends that suffered during that time.

I made the same point in a discussion the other day. I think long term, very little will change. I'm not sure it's so much about memories and lessons, but that we are inherently selfish. I don't mean that in a truly nasty way, most people are decent, but our first loyalty is always to our immediate families, then our community. We have a need to "get ahead", to make ourselves secure, to provide for the kids etc. It's pretty evident in the way we approach international aid, the poverty that exists worldwide despite an abundance of global resources.
I think we all go right back to overseas holidays, big mortgages etc.
Appreciate this makes me sound like a Sanders/Corbyn-loving raving socialist, but I'm actually not - I am as or more guilty of the above as anyone.

Great stuff mate. There are some industries where there is no work, and others where there is too much. Helping out supermarkets in this stressful time is a fantastic thing to do if you can. I've worked supermarket jobs before and I can't imagine how hard things would be at the moment, having to serve hordes of people during a pandemic. All of them are deadset legends in my eyes right now.

Agree, nice one @Stockcar86 . I'd do the same if I was allowed out.
I used to work the fish bay at Pak'n'Save. I'd advise sticking with dry goods if at all possible...

@voodoo I think unless things impact you directly, people tend to forget quickly...we changed alot when I was made redundant in 2014, it was a reality check for us, but also some stuff I saw happen to other people at the same time put things in perspective and gave me a new appreciation for how quickly your wonderful little life can change through no fault of your own.
We will not be leaving our house again until we need food again....although my neighbour did mention golf...seperate cars, cheeky old buggar even had the nerve to tell me the width with which I hit the ball, we are in little danger of getting within 2m of one another!

@No-Quarter My workload has significantly increased as well as I'm the one implementing the online teaching at my workplace. I usually only work four days a week but have been five days the last two weeks, balanced out by working at home so I can take time during the day when I need it.
I too feel lucky that I have job security and setting up the online successful will help me down the line if we do have to start cutting staff.

It's been a struggle, but it's a crazy time we live in at the moment, so I'm willing to make the sacrifice.

I've been putting in a lot of hours from home - that I would never do in the office - because I can generally do it at a rhythm that suits me better. I tend to go into the evenings when I'm going down the hole on something. Not having to put on grown up pants also helps.
IMHO, learning a new software platform requires a complete absence of people coming up to your desk asking for shit, and the annoying noise of some co-workers (loud, inconsiderate HR people who will spend all fucking day talking about nothing, but tell senior managers they saw you drinking a coffee for 10 minutes and what is up with that? etc).
Some of the guys in the team are struggling without the close camaraderie, but I'm probably less socially inclined when it comes to work.
Kids are effectively off school at this point. E-learning should be fun with the shitty internet in this country, but at least Google Classroom should help in that regard.

Is that really a thing at your office??? Fucking HR time police narks watching you like a hawk?
That's extraordinary in this day and age. That's the stuff of law firms 5-10 years ago.
